Russell Wilson Played Big Role in Free Agent's Visit With NY Giants

For the third straight season, Russell Wilson finds himself on a new team. Though his future with the New York Giants is uncertain, it isn't stopping him from helping the organization make roster upgrades.
Though he isn't the superstar talent he once was, Wilson is still a former Super Bowl winner and a notable name in the league. Knowing this, he seems to be putting forth the effort to add more weapons around him in 2025.
Last week, free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis made an appearance on the Up & Adams show. Among the topics they talked about was his recent visit with the Giants. Davis opened up on getting to meet numerous members of the organization, but one of the big things for him was Wilson having dinner with him.

"It was awesome," Davis said of his visit with the Giants. "Going out to New York and seeing those guys and talk with them. Russ came to dinner, that was dope. Having Russell Wilson there that was pretty sick. He's a legend"
When asked about the idea of catching passes from Wilson this year, Davis didn't shy away from it being something he's giving a lot of thought to.
"That's me and Russ' game for sure," Davis continued. "Definitely deep ball threat and Russ knows how to sling it downfield. Something that I've looked into for sure."

Davis, 26, spent the first four years of his career with the Buffalo Bills. He had a lot of success playing with an elite-level QB in Josh Allen, notching at least seven touchdowns in three different seasons. Davis decided to hit the open market last offseason, eventually winding up on the Jacksonville Jaguars. His production took a massive dip, resulting in the front office cutting ties with him.

Though he had a lackluster showing last season, Davis could still be an interesting target for the Giants. He proved in Buffalo that he can be an effective weapon when paired with the right QB. Based on his comments about Wilson, it looks like he views him as someone he could thrive alongside.
While it appears that Davis had a successful visit with the Giants, only time will tell if it results in him joining Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton in New York's receiver corps.

What did Colts' Daniel Jones learn in New York? 'All the cliches'
WESTFIELD, Ind. – Years in the New York media market will make a man more than proficient in the use of cliches, especially if that person has a particular rocky tenure as quarterback of the New York Giants. By the time he reached the Indianapolis Colts this offseason, Daniel Jones had dusted off more than his fair share of cliches to keep the microphones moving and the airwaves filled. And it's actually his main takeaway from his Giants tenure. 'There's specific, down to the smallest detail, and things that you'll carry with you,' Jones said to a small group of reporters Tuesday, July 29 after being asked what he took away the most from his time in New York. 'Generally, I think just smart decision-making and accuracy is what wins football games at the quarterback position. So just being continuously committed and relentless with a good decision-making process … I think all the cliches you hear as a quarterback, that is what wins games. I think I definitely experienced that in New York.' Anthony Richardson owns 2024 Colts' shortcomings, benching: 'I didn't do enough' Of course, it's more complicated than that. Jones was the franchise's first-round pick (sixth overall) out of Duke in 2018, the heir apparent to franchise legend and two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning. He was the victim of poor roster construction and coaching for the first three years of his career and rarely did himself any favors to mitigate those hindrances. But the Giants went 9-6-1 in 2022, the first season of coach Brian Daboll's tenure, with Jones having by far his most complete season in the NFL. The next season featured regression and a season-ending ACL injury that impacted his preparation for the 2024 season. After a 2-8 start to the season, the Giants benched Jones. Later that week, the team agreed to release Jones, who signed with the Minnesota Vikings for the remainder of the season as an emergency quarterback option. Anthony Richardson sets pace in Colts' QB competition, Daniel Jones not far behind 'Obviously you're disappointed as a competitor, a place I was drafted, had a great opportunity,' Jones said. 'Some great times, but obviously not enough there at the end.' His time with Minnesota and head coach Kevin O'Connell, highly regarded for his work with quarterbacks as a former NFL backup himself, was valuable. Jones found himself impressed with the level of detail and particularity that goes into quarterbacks' game plans. 'Their process is very meticulous throughout the week,' Jones said. 'They're checking all the boxes and going through every look – walking through it, talking through it. Just a high, high level of detail and preparation.' It's something he has taken to Indianapolis, where he finds himself in a starting quarterback battle against another former high first-round pick in Anthony Richardson. 'Excited for the next step,' Jones said, 'and to come here and work with these guys.'

Pete Carroll seeing LB Devin White return to Pro Bowl form: 'He's back'
It may surprise some people to learn that Devin White is just 27 years old. Probably because he's has quite the whirlwind of a career. White was the top linebacker taken in the 2019 NFL Draft at fifth overall. As it happens, he was selected right after the Raiders used the fourth overall pick on DE Clelin Ferrell. In just his second season, he was the second team All Pro middle linebacker for the Buccaneers Super Bowl winning squad. The following season, he was a Pro Bowler. Two years later, injuries piled up and his play took a nosedive because of it. After his five-year rookie contract was up, the Bucs didn't bring him back. Last season, White was rendered to relative obscurity. He appeared in just seven games for the Texans with one start. And he joined the Raiders this offseason with little fanfare. The thinking being that new GM John Spytek still had visions of the Pro Bowl starting middle linebacker for the Super Bowl winning squad. Not the player White had devolved into the past couple years. Since the pads came on Monday, White has looked a lot like his former greatness. This included a sack and an interception. 'I think that's where my game is. Just being able to run to the ball, see the ball, and have good ball skills," White said of his interception. "Just being an athletic linebacker. When I came out, that's what I wanted to be known for. Being a run, hit, tackle, make plays, get sacks, get turnovers. I've been showing it all camp, so I just want to stay consistent with that. First day of pads yesterday I had a great day. They asked me could I do it two days in a row, I said I'm gonna do it every day I get on the field. That's just the standard I set for myself. It's the standard I set for the defense, and that's what I want the team to see. When I'm even competing against the other side, I want them to say '45 is bringing it every time he steps on the field'. So, whether I'm making plays or it's somebody else making plays, I'm gonna bring the juice and I'm gonna have my teammates' back and hopefully they have mine and I know they will because they've been showing it all camp.' His head coach is convinced. "He's back," Pete Carroll said of Devin White. "He was on top of the world a few years ago and then things just kind of didn't work out for one reason or another. He's back in action now. He came up to me and said 'I'm all in now' and he was dead serious in how he said it, you know. And you can see it." White said among other things that he was "selfish" for trying to play through injuries the way he did. That he should have recognized that he was hurt too much to be an asset to the team. Both the physical pain as well as the regret that comes along with letting his team down weighed on him. He's past it now and it shows. 'I feel comfortable. I feel healthy. I feel thankful. And I feel hungry," White said. "[I'm] back but still got to prove it to the world each and every Sunday or Monday or Thursday night. And I got to prove it to my team every day I step in the building. It's just a mindset. But I think coach Pete just sees me having a lot of fun with the game again. No pressure on me. Just go out there and do what I've been doing my whole life. Just having fun. If me having fun on the field with my guys is me being back, then I'm glad to be back.'
