Rico Bogen hoping momentum can lead to back-to-back T100 victories

Glasgow Timesa day ago

Rico Bogen hopes the momentum from his first T100 World Triathlon Tour victory can carry him to the top of the podium again in Vancouver.
Bogen claimed his maiden T100 victory with a dominant performance in San Francisco in May, lifting him to the top of the overall standings after two races.
The German now hopes that having earned a first race win, he can repeat the feat on a new course for all athletes in Canada just two weeks after the San Francisco leg.
'I have the momentum on my side but it's a new day and a strong field,' he said. 'Let's see how the others are in the race and if I can perform like I did in San Francisco.
'It's hard to do it back-to-back, and it's such a strong field. I am in a good mood and want to have fun out there.
'It gave me confidence, now I know I can win a race like the T100 with such a strong field. You are always a little bit nervous for the race, but this gave me confidence that with a good training block I can beat everybody.
'It would be very cool to win back-to-back races, and it would be very good for the overall series.'

The T100 arrives in Vancouver for the third stop of a world tour that will culminate in a final in Qatar in December.
Bogen finished 10th on the first stop in Singapore before rocketing up the rankings with victory in San Francisco, but knows another good result is required in Vancouver ahead of the tour's European legs in France and the UK.
The race in Vancouver is the first time the T100 has taken place in the Canadian city, and Bogen hopes his time reconnecting with nature can help him to another strong result.
'The course is very similar to San Francisco so we didn't change too much in training,' he said. We came straight from San Francisco, it's important to be able to fully reset and train.
'It's my first time here in Canada. Last week I travelled in a camper with my parents. We visited a bit of nature, it's beautiful. I love nature and I love a little bit more silence
'It's such a cool city. It's perfect conditions for triathlon. The bike course looks cool, a bit of technical stuff and a bit of hills.'

Ferdinand says Man Utd and Arsenal target should be 'causing nightmare' for move

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says Viktor Gyokeres should be 'causing a nightmare' at Sporting if he wishes to secure a move to the Premier League this summer. Gyokeres, 27, has established himself as one of the most sought-after attacking players in European football on the back of two outstanding seasons with Sporting, in which he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances. The Portuguese champions have grown increasingly resigned to losing their prized possession amid strong interest from the Premier League, with Arsenal currently leading Manchester United in the race for the prolific forward. However, Gyokeres' path to English football is currently being blocked by Sporting president Frederico Varandas, who is disputing claims made by the Swede's camp. A 'furious' Gyokeres had been under the impression he could leave for a fee of £59million, but Varandas is denying the existence of a supposed gentleman's agreement with the striker. 'I'll tell you one thing, I would be in his [Varandas'] office and he wouldn't be able to leave me,' ex-United and England defender Ferdinand told talkSPORT when asked about the latest rumours. 'I'd be in his bed, I'd be in his front room, his kitchen, he wouldn't be able to get me out of his sight. 'I'd be causing him a nightmare to get out if we'd had an agreement. 'I did that when I was at Leeds. I heard that Manchester United were interested in me and I knew had to let me go. 'I went to Peter Ridsdale and said, 'Listen, I know you need to sell me, let's not haggle over a couple of million here and there and let's get a deal done', and I was there for hours waiting and ended up getting it done.' While Ferdinand has been impressed by Gyokeres' extraordinary numbers in Portuguese football, he believes the jury is still out on the Sweden international being able to mix it with the best. According to Ferdinand, United ideally should be scouring the market for a proven No.9 with 'experience'. 'Is he the right guy? Listen, he has some really good attributes. I've not seen enough of him to be totally convinced,' the six-time Premier League winner added. 'The games I have seen him in, in the Champions League against players that match him up physically, I'd love to see a bit more. 'But there's no denying that he knows where the goal is. He's playing in Portugal where he's been banging in and setting up goals left, right and centre the last couple of years. 'I just think for Manchester United, at this moment in time, I would go for experience more than anything.' Gyokeres reassured fans he would 'speak when the time is right' as he took to Instagram amid incessant speculation over his future on Friday. 'There's a lot of talk at the moment, most of it false,' Gyokeres wrote. 'I will speak when the time is right.' Gyokeres' current contract in Lisbon runs through to June 2028. 'He is very happy here,' Sporting manager Rui Borges said when asked for an update on Gyokeres' future after the club successfully defended their Primeira Liga title. 'He is very connected to the game, he wants to score and he is obsessed with it. 'He is the best striker in Europe, as the numbers show. 'He will be attractive, but I believe that if he doesn't leave Sporting, he will remain very committed to the club. He feels very happy here.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Darts boo boys who targeted Luke Littler and Humphries condemned as German has message for his own people

Aussie ace Damon Heta outlines situation as Martin Schindler wants no heckling Savaged Luke Humphries and Luke Littler faced brutal conditions as humble German hero Martin Schinder hit out at home booing of the rattled England pair. The red-hot tournament favourites were sent spinning out of the Darts World Cup by the hosts amid partisan scenes in Frankfurt. ‌ Humphries and Littler were hounded by the home crowds throughout the contest and Schindler and partner Ricardo Pietreczko piled on the agonies with a brilliant showing to send the English pair, who both got an MBE on the eve of the game, out in convincing fashion. ‌ Schindler loved the support, but didn't agree with the heckling as he said: 'Obviously we have to say that we don't approve of the whistling and booing. We have to say it's not getting easier for us because our opponents are getting booed or whistled, we still need to go out there and perform.' Germany now face Australia and Down Under star Damon Heta reckons Littler and Humphries faced a nightmare scenario which he hopes he and partner Simon Whitlock can turn around when they face Shindler and Pietreczko on Sunday afternoon. He said: 'They [England] probably relied on each other thinking: Ah, he'll do the business, ah, he'll do the business. But the conditions weren't great. The crowd was awful. In Germany, it was probably brutal out there for them. They would take it as another learning curve and probably get stronger, unfortunately, for the rest of us. 'Fair play to Germany. They had to still play the good darts, but at the end of the day, we're just worried about us and what we've got to do. It's blocking it out, but at the same time, I think it's trying to use it in your own advantage going: Alright, let's keep them quiet. Let's shut this up. Let's get on top of it. Then that way, when it's quiet and they're getting behind, that's when they start feeling the pinch going: Oh, they're not performing. 'You get tangled up in a hard-out game where it's probably going to the wire. That's when it starts getting a bit nervy, a bit twitchy. They want to perform in their own country, so the pressure's probably more on them to wanting to get something over the line. I'm not sure if Germany's won the World Cup before. No?' Whitlock agrees and added: 'I think the crowd could play a big part again, but anyway, we're pretty seasoned, so just get on with the job. Those guys had two wins under their belt, which I think is a big advantage, playing England. They never played together before and you can sort of tell that it played a big factor, plus with the crowd. We've just played a lot of darts, and I think we'll be fine. If we get on top early and quieten the crowd down a bit, it might be different. Germany got a good start [against England] and they just went with it, so we've got to shut that down a bit.'

Javier Mascherano praises Lionel Messi after opening draw at Club World Cup

The 37-year-old was unable to inspire his side to victory against the Egyptian champions at the Hard Rock Stadium as FIFA's revamped tournament still awaits its first goal. Goalkeeper Oscar Ustari saved a penalty in the first half from Al Ahly forward Trezeguet whilst his opposite number Mohamed El Shenawy denied Messi in stoppage time at the end of the game, turning the former Barcelona star's effort against the bar. 'It's admirable how much love Messi has for the game,' said Mascherano. 'After all the matches he's played, he's still here, giving his all. Of course, we wanted to win, but I'm happy with the team's performance today. 'Clearly, when we find Leo in positions and get the ball to him in the best way, that's where we have the most options.' Miami co-owner Sir David Beckham was given an ovation by home supporters following his knighthood which was confirmed this week. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham acknowledges the crowd (Rebecca Blackwell/AP) The presence of the former England captain failed to provide the spark for his side in what was arguably their most winnable match of the group stage, ahead of meetings with Porto and Brazilian side Palmeiras. 'We take it game by game,' said Mascherano. 'We know that the level will clearly rise in the next game because they're a European opponent, but we have to stay with the feeling that it's 11 against 11. 'Anything can happen in football.'
