‘Doing Black Caviar things': David Hayes does a deep dive on what makes Ka Ying Rising a superstar sprinter
That's how Hall of Fame training legend David Hayes encapsulates his Hong Kong superstar and raging $1.80 The Everest favourite Ka Ying Rising.
Racenet this week asked Hayes to do a deep dive on what makes his star sprinter so freakish.
He gave a remarkable insight into the racing phenomenon.
'I used to watch Black Caviar gallop very closely, I would say he is the only horse I've ever had do Black Caviar things,' Hayes told Racenet.
'I read that Black Caviar had an incredible stride length compared to other horses when she was let go in a race.

'It's the same with Ka Ying Rising.
'His action goes from being normal but when you push the button at the 300(m) or whenever Zac (Purton) decides to go, his stride gets much, much bigger.
'The thing to my eye that he does very differently to most good horses is that his trackwork is good enough, but when he gets into a racing situation he has got this incredible ability at high speed to lengthen his stride and put the race away.
'I haven't measured it and I haven't done any scientific testing of him, I can't see the point.
'But I have probably watched 30,000 horses and I'm sure I am right.
'I have had some incredible and exciting moments and some exciting horses, but I think he is the most consistently exciting horse I've had who just keeps putting up incredible performances and runs that are so dominant.
'If the best track worker I've ever had is a 10 out of 10, this horse would be a seven out of 10 worker.
'But he's a 10 out of 10 at the trials and a 10 out of 10 at the races.'

Ka Ying Rising was last seen in April when he made it 12 consecutive wins, producing a devastating victory in the Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize at Sha Tin.
The world's top ranked sprinter will race in the $20m The Everest in October for new slot-holder the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Hayes can't wait to show him off to the Australian public, feeling he is the closest sprint sensation that racing fans have seen to Black Caviar who was famously undefeated in 25 races.

Hayes feels Ka Ying Rising has already displayed similar brilliance to the likes of Black Caviar and Winx – he just needs to maintain the rage and sustain the winning momentum in the future to be rated alongside those former greats.
'If he goes for another 12 months, at the rate he is going, he will end up one of the all-time greats,' Hayes said.
'What makes a horse an all-time great is the length that they stay at the top.
'For instance, Black Caviar three years, Winx four years.
'In their first year of brilliance, I think my horse is every bit as good as those two.
'But he's just got to last, if he can hold this form for the length of time that they did, he will be one of all-time greats.
'If he gets the job done in The Everest it would be one of the highlights of anyone's career, to bring a horse down to the richest turf race in world and win.
'I would just love everyone to see him, he's worth seeing.'
In betting on The Everest, confirmed runners Private Harry ($6) and Briasa ($8) are so far considered the ones most likely to give Ka Ying Rising a serious challenge.

'She has come through the run very well and he last bit of work on Thursday morning was really nice. 'She will turn up with bells on.' Price said it would pay to forget the last run of Jamarni when he tackles the Class 1 Handicap (1500m). The son of Pride Of Dubai was held up behind runners and wasn't able to be tested when ninth to Autumn Dream last week. Prior to that, he placed in consecutive runs over 1300m before scoring his first win over 1500m in a Super Maiden at Hawkesbury. 'He got trapped in behind them and was a victim of horses coming back in his lap,' he said. 'He was a little bit shy in amongst them the other day and needs some sort of head gear so we have elected to go with the winkers this week. 'It's quite a strong race but he is in it up to his ears. 'He worked nicely on Thursday morning and should have no trouble with the quick back-up because he didn't get knocked around the other day. 'He has drawn a nice, soft gate to get a good run and he will be very competitive.' The stable is chasing a reward with both Zoustrong and Autumn Heir in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Series Provincial Maiden Handicap (1500m). Zoustrong only made his race debut on June 27 at Moruya where he finished seventh behind Teepee Princess before an improved run when third to Commanding Belle. 'We are asking a lot of him. It's only his third race start but he raced well the other day,' said Price. 'We are talking a leap of faith with him because it's an Inglis Bonus race which he is eligible for. 'I think he is going to be positive with us not wanting him to be because of the way raced last start. 'He has come through the run with flying colours so we are happy to give him his chance.' Autumn Heir is also in his first campaign but has had a little more race experience with four runs, finishing just behind the placegetters in his last two. 'He will be some sort of chance in this race too. He never had a whole pile of luck the other day. 'He is going to want 2000 metres eventually but we have kept him nice and fresh. Hopefully he is sharp enough for the 1500 metres.'

David Pfieffer opts for Randwick instead of Big Dance qualifier with Oh Diamond Lil

The carrot of qualifying Oh Diamond Lil for the $3m Big Dance wasn't enough to sway trainer David Pfieffer from heading to Royal Randwick on Saturday. Pfieffer was weighing up travelling to NSW North Coast next Friday to run in the $150,000 Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m) but will run Oh Diamond Lil in this weekend's Mostyn Copper Benchmark 88 Handicap (1600m) instead. 'The options were to go to this race or the Coffs Harbour Cup but this race with the rail out and a small field, it was appealing. 'There are a couple there that might push forward and lead but that might mean we park in behind them. 'The beauty of her is that she has that great gate speed that will help her so we will let Jase (Collett) sort it out in the first couple of furlongs.' Oh Diamond Lil has drawn the outside of the field of nine but can offset the gate with her early gate speed. Jockey Jason Collett took advantage of a better draw last start to settle in the lead when Oh Diamond Lil was able to run her rivals of their feet at the same track and trip. 'Jason galloped her on Tuesday and she is just in a good patch of form and in a good headspace.' Pfieffer could be willing to raise the bar higher again after Saturday with Oh Diamond Lil, who is a $2.10 favourite on the weekend. • Thompson has strong hand to cap off outstanding season STAYING TEST FOR RED RAGS Trainer Jeremy Gask will trust the staying pedigree of Red Rags To Bulls to come to the fore in Saturday's TAB Highway Class 3 Plate (1800m) at Royal Randwick. Red Rags To Bulls ($7.50) will be going into uncharted territory as she prepares to step out over more than a mile for the first time in her career. She is the granddaughter as one of Gask's best ever gallopers Tingirana, which finished a narrow runner up in the South Australian Oaks in 2004. 'Now is the time to try it,' Gask said. 'You can never be sure and I can't be convinced she will but she certainly races like she won't have any problem. 'On her mum side they all stayed and her mum Tingirana was a lovely mare for us. 'She was the last of the family I had so she has the pedigree to get there if everything falls on the right side. 'I guess being by Bull Point is the query, how many of them get over a trip but I think the dam's side is more important from a stamina point of view. 'She is pretty straightforward and is so easy to deal with so I will go there quite confident that she runs all right.' Red Rags To Bulls will go past the mile for the first time on Saturday. Picture: Getty Images Red Rags To Bulls reaped the benefits of an excellent ride from apprentice Ben Osmond to win in Highway grade two starts ago before doing her best work late to finish fifth over a mile at Randwick last start. She is a $7.50 chance to add another win to her name with in-form jockey Tom Sherry aboard this weekend. Crop Duster ($34) will join her on the float from Scone on Saturday morning with the son of The Brothers War lining up in the Marcellin College Benchmark 78 Handicap (1300m). Gask is hopeful forecast rain on race day will arrive. 'We are going to take a punt that the rain will come,' Gask said. 'We have to leave before scratchings so we were deciding whether to go down on Friday afternoon. 'Red Rags To Bulls is better travelling in the morning and he is going to have to take the punt it will rain. 'It would help, it won't bother her either, but certainly helps him.' Gask has enjoyed a good season and has been picking his targets perfectly with his small team, which has a winning strike rate of 15 per cent. • Untapped talent chasing another win at Randwick on Saturday SPRINTER CATCHES EYE IN TRIAL Two-time The Everest placegetter Private Eye is on track for a first-up crack at the Group 2 $300,000 Missile Stakes (1200m) after impressing in a Warwick Farm trial hitout on Friday. Private Eye, now a winner of more than $12m in prizemoney, was strong late when finishing second behind runaway leader Bonita Queen in a 900m hit out on home turf. Star stablemate Ceolwulf wasn't asked to do much in the same heat while three-time Group 1 winning filly Lady Shenandoah had a quiet hitout. The Joseph Pride-trained Private Eye has had a short let up following his third in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm and is poised to resume in a fortnight at Royal Randwick. 'The Missile is the most likely starting point for him,' Proven Thoroughbred's managing director Jamie Walter said. 'He hasn't lost much (fitness). He wasn't out that long and he is a pretty good fresh.' Walter's Proven Thoroughbred colours could be in for a big day at Royal Randwick on Saturday with The Black Cloud, Little Cointreau, Termagant and Break Free all lining up. The Black Cloud ($6) and Termagant ($34) will both contest the ATC Thank You Trainers Handicap (1100m) with the latter coming down from Brisbane for Matt Hoysted. 'The Black Cloud has found a nice race,' Walter said. 'She gets a little bit of weight relief. We don't know how much rain is going to fall, she can get through it. 'Her stablemate Storm The Ramparts is racing out of his skin. 'We also have a couple down to from Brisbane, Termagant will race against The Black Cloud and Break Free is come down as well. 'They've come down for found suitable races and a bit of give in the track.' Break Free ($8.50), also trained by Hoysted, is in the ATC Thank You Owners Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m) while Little Cointreau ($5.50) will look to end a run of five straight thirds in the Marcellin College Randwick Benchmark 78 Handicap (1300m).
