Donald Trump Names Kennedy Center Honors Nominees: Full List

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced his first slate of Kennedy Center Honors nominees as the institution's new chairman, naming country music star George Strait, "Rocky" actor Sylvester Stallone, singer Gloria Gaynor, rock band KISS, and actor-singer Michael Crawford. Trump also said he will host this year's awards program.
During his first term, Trump avoided the ceremony after several artists vowed not to attend in protest. Now, as chairman, he has replaced the center's board of trustees with loyalists.
On Truth Social Tuesday, Trump teased a possible name change for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, jokingly referring to it as the "Trump/Kennedy Center." He promised to restore the venue to "the absolute TOP LEVEL of luxury, glamour, and entertainment," noting that renovations were underway. "It had fallen on hard times, physically, BUT WILL SOON BE MAKING A MAJOR COMEBACK!!!" he wrote.
The Kennedy Center said in a statement it was "honored" to host Trump, who will be making his third visit since January, and hinted at an upcoming construction announcement. The center credited Trump's "advocacy" for planned renovations aimed at restoring its "prestige and grandeur," and said it was excited to reveal "this year's INCREDIBLE slate of Kennedy Center Honorees."
Trump has long been critical of the venue's condition, calling it in "tremendous disrepair" during a March visit. The process for selecting this year's honorees remains unclear; traditionally, a bipartisan advisory committee has made the picks. The Kennedy Center did post a teaser on social media: "Coming Soon ... A country music icon, an Englishman, a New York City rock band, a dance Queen and a multi-billion dollar Actor walk into the Kennedy Center Opera House ..."
Trump has previously floated honoring singer-songwriter Paul Anka and Stallone, one of three actors he named as Hollywood ambassadors earlier this year. Anka was once slated to perform at Trump's 2017 inauguration but withdrew at the last moment.
Established in 1978, the Kennedy Center Honors have recognized a wide array of artists, with presidents of both parties traditionally attending the ceremony—regardless of politics. In 2017, after honoree Norman Lear refused to attend a White House celebration over Trump's proposed arts funding cuts, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump skipped the event and stayed away for the rest of his first term.
Since returning to office, Trump has taken a more hands-on approach—naming himself chairman, reshaping the board, asserting control over programming, and vowing to end events featuring drag performers. These moves have prompted backlash, with several artists canceling appearances, including the producers of Hamilton, actor Issa Rae, singer Rhiannon Giddens, and author Louise Penny.
In July, House Republicans added an amendment to a spending bill—signed by Trump—to rename the Kennedy Center's Opera House after Melania Trump, though the change has not been made. Separately, a House proposal to rename the entire center after Trump drew criticism from Maria Shriver, niece of President Kennedy, who called it "insane."
Honorees receive a rainbow-ribboned medallion symbolizing the diversity of the performing arts. In April, the center changed its exterior lighting from a long-standing rainbow pattern to a permanent red, white, and blue display.

Israel's 'Dancing with the Stars' routine goes viral with Trump and Melania tribute
A routine on Israel's "Dancing with the Stars" made headlines this week for its humorous tribute to President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. In the recently aired episode of "Rokdim Im Kokhavim," the Israeli version of the popular reality dance competition television show, two professional dancers appear dressed as the president, in his signature blue suit and red tie, and the first lady in the navy blue outfit she wore to the inauguration earlier this year. As they listen to the National Anthem play, the dancer portraying Trump attempts to kiss Melania before she shoos him away and fixes his tie. The music then switches to the Village People's "YMCA" as the pair hit the dance floor. The dancer portraying Melania switches into an American flag outfit as the dancer portraying Trump breaks out into his signature dance moves. Clips of the light-hearted routine were widely shared on social media platform X, where they drew millions of views. "Israel 'Dance with the Stars' TV show featured one of the pairs dressed as President Trump and Melania Trump, and they absolutely killed it," one account posted on X, along with a clip from the show that drew over two million views. "This is a must-watch." The routine drew praise from the president's supporters on social media. "This is very fun!" former Trump campaign senior adviser Steve Cortes lauded. "An overseas 'Dancing with the Stars' pair dressed as Pres Trump & the First Lady and CRUSHING it…" "MUST WATCH!!" pro-Trump political commentator April Silverman also applauded, writing that the pair "absolutely killed it." Neighbor Leaves Garage Cracked Open, Who's Peering Underneath Goes Viral
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A recent TikTok video has captivated thousands, all thanks to a small act of kindness from a dog owner. The clip shows a garage door cracked open just enough for a dog to squeeze a flattened body underneath. The adorable moment reveals the pup splayed out on the ground, peeking under the door with a fixed gaze. Since the video was posted, it has received over 467,000 likes. The video's caption says the creator's neighbors "always crack their garage open so their dog can people watch." Stock image: A person opens their garage door. The comments section of the video filled with users expressing their delight. "If not pancake, then why pancake shaped?" one person wrote, while another user added: "I love how it's not [open] enough that he can get out." "President of the neighborhood watch committee," a third wrote. The dog's commitment to its hobby resonated with other pet owners. One user shared a similar experience. "My dogs used to do that under the fence at my old house, just peeking up at people throwing their trash," they wrote. Many viewers also expressed their desire to join the dog in its pastime. "Ooh and in the shade too! The way I'd be lying down and talking to them like they were my shrink," a commenter posted. Another added: "You'd catch me laying on the ground petting him kicking my little feet having the time of my life." Dogs Love People Watching This isn't the first time that a dog's love for people-watching has gone viral. Newsweek previously reported on a black Labrador retriever who also loved to socialize from his yard. In that instance, the owner went so far as to carve a lookout hole into her fence, demonstrating the lengths owners will go to accommodate their curious pups. While the most-recent viral video captures a heartwarming moment of a dog enjoying a low-key hobby, experts say it is important for pet owners to keep their animals active. An August 2022 study published in PLOS One highlighted the importance of a balanced routine for pet health. "Dogs who exercise less frequently or less intensely are more likely to be overweight," the study said, concluding that "a more holistic approach to changing both dietary and exercise routine needs to be made" to treat obesity in canines. The dog in the garage video serves as a sweet reminder of the love between dogs and their owners, and the small ways that humans cater to their pets' unique personalities—all while reinforcing the importance of keeping furry friends happy and healthy.
