All Facts Based On Well-Known Academic Sources: NCERT On Mughal Chapter Row

News185 days ago
NCERT has clarified that its Class 8 Mughal history textbook is based on well-known sources and aims to promote holistic learning for students.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued an clarification following criticism of its newly released Class 8 Social Science textbook, 'Exploring Society, India and Beyond". The textbook, introduced under the updated National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, has sparked debate for its portrayal of prominent Mughal rulers such as Babur, Akbar, and Aurangzeb.
Concerns were raised regarding descriptions in the textbook that refer to Babur as a 'brutal and ruthless conqueror", depict Akbar's rule as a mixture of 'brutality and tolerance", and describe Aurangzeb as someone who demolished temples and gurdwaras. Critics argue that such characterisations may give young learners a skewed or negative impression of the Mughal era.
In response, NCERT stated that the textbook is based on well-established primary and secondary academic sources, and has been designed to provide students with a broad, multidisciplinary understanding of India's past, particularly the period spanning the 13th to mid-19th century.
'The objective is not to overwhelm children with excessive facts, but to help them develop a critical understanding of how events in history have shaped the India we live in today," the council said in a statement. The book integrates elements of history, geography, economics, and governance, and follows the framework outlined in the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
To address possible concerns about misinterpretation or bias, NCERT has included a note on page 20, titled 'A Note on Some Darker Periods in History". This section acknowledges that history often involves episodes of violence and conflict, and advises readers not to hold present-day individuals or communities accountable for the actions of historical figures.
NCERT further emphasised that the textbook must be read in its entirety and not judged based on isolated excerpts. It reiterated that the goal is to foster balanced, contextual, and holistic learning, not to create division or promote prejudice.
This clarification arrives amidst wider discussions on the evolving nature of history education in Indian schools, particularly as the new curriculum encourages the blending of factual content with critical thinking and ethical awareness.
The textbook remains in use, with NCERT urging educators, parents, and students to approach it as part of a sincere and thoughtful effort to deepen understanding of India's complex and layered past.

Kannada Development Authority to come up with ‘Bhasha neeti' soon: Purushottama Bilimale

Chairman of Kannada Development Authority (KDA), Purushottama Bilimale, said on Tuesday that the KDA will draft a 'Bhasha neeti', a language policy for the State. Speaking to the press in Udupi, he said that the State has an education policy but not a language policy. Even India does not have a language policy. 'A committee constituted by the authority is now framing the draft of the policy. It has already collected data on 230 languages spoken in Karnataka,' Mr. Bilimale said. He said that KDA will, within a year, come up with its recommendations on what the government, district administrations and education department should do to save so many languages, including the minor ones, in the State. Mr. Bilimale hailed the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, saying that it has recognised the importance of regional and local languages, as well as the mother tongue, in the overall development of a child. 'National Education Policy recommends teaching in the regional language of a State, speaking with students in the local language, and, if given an opportunity, including the mother tongue in the curriculum.' Mr. Bilimale said that the NEP came into force in Karnataka, but not its recommendations. Its original objective related to languages failed to take shape in the State.

Over Rs 44 crore released under MGNREGS so far: Centre tells Lok Sabha

Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) The Centre has released Rs 44,323 crore to states and union territories under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) so far, Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. In a written reply, the minister gave the figures of disbursements of wages, material and admin components till July 17, 2025. According to the revelation, the amount disbursed is almost half of the total allocation of Rs 86,000 crore earmarked for the financial year 2025-26. In a written reply to a separate question, MoS Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan said the allocation included full pending wage liabilities and 50 per cent of Material Liabilities of the previous financial year. 'Regarding budget allocation for Mahatma Gandhi NREGS it is submitted that, for the financial year 2024-25, budget allocation of Rs. 86,000 crore has been made, which was the highest ever allocation for the scheme at the Budget Estimate (BE) stage since inception. In the financial year 2025-26, the Government has retained this allocation at Rs 86,000 crore, ensuring continued support for rural employment," Chouhan said. He said that keeping in view the demand-driven nature of the scheme, the rural development ministry closely monitors demand for employment at the ground level and seeks additional funds from the Finance as and when required. Naveen Patnaik Flags Omission of Odisha's Paika Rebellion From NCERT History Textbook

Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday expressed concern over the exclusion of the 1817 Paika Rebellion from the latest Class 8 history textbook released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Calling it a "watershed moment in Odisha's history," Patnaik said the move undermines the sacrifices of the Paikas, who revolted against British rule nearly four decades before the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. "I had urged the Government of India several times to declare it as the first war of Independence. The omission of the epic rebellion from NCERT textbooks is a huge dishonour to our brave Paikas, 200 years after the rebellion," Patnaik said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He urged Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to ensure justice is done to the Paika Bidroha and to the people of Odisha. However, NCERT issued a clarification on Monday night, stating that the recently released Exploring Society: India and Beyond is the first in a two-volume Social Science textbook series for Class 8. The council confirmed that regional resistance movements, including the Paika Rebellion of Odisha and the Kuka Movement of Punjab, will be included in the second volume, which is currently in its final stages and expected to be released between September and October 2025. In a detailed press note dated July 16, 2025, NCERT said the new textbook has been developed in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. It aims to offer students an integrated, multidisciplinary understanding of India's geography, economic life, governance, and history-covering the period from the 13th century to the mid-19th century. NCERT stated that the book was designed to avoid overloading students with information and instead focuses on fostering critical thinking. "All facts presented are based on well-known primary and secondary academic sources. A note titled 'History's Darker Period' has also been included on page 20 to help learners view the content in the right context," the council said.
