
Govt detects over Rs 7-trn GST evasion in 5 yrs
In 2024-25 fiscal alone, over Rs2.23 lakh crore of Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion were detected by CGST field officers, according to the data shared by Minister of State (MoS) for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha. Of the 30,056 cases of GST evasion detected in FY25, more than half or 15,283 cases pertained to ITC fraud, where the evasion was to the tune of Rs58,772 crore. In the 2023-24 fiscal, Rs2.30 lakh crore worth GST evasion was detected by CGST field officers, involving ITC fraud of Rs36,374 crore. In FY23, about Rs1.32 lakh crore GST evasion was detected, including Rs24,140 crore of fake ITC claims. In FY22 and FY21, GST evasion stood at Rs73,238 crore and Rs49,384 crore respectively.
This included ITC fraud of Rs28,022 crore and Rs31,233 crore respectively. In the last five years (2020-21 to 2024-25), total GST evasion detected by CGST field officers stood at about Rs7.08 lakh crore in 91,370 cases.
Taxes recovered during the period by way of voluntary deposit stood at over Rs1.29 lakh crore. The evasion data includes ITC fraud of about Rs1.79 lakh crore in 44,938 cases between FY'21 to FY25.
Chaudhary said the central government and GSTN are taking various steps to prevent tax evasion, such as digitization through E-invoicing, GST analytics, highlighting of outliers based on system-flagged mismatches, providing actionable intelligence and selection of returns for scrutiny and selection of taxpayers for audit based on various risk parameters.
'These measures are helpful in safeguarding the revenue and nabbing the evaders,' Chaudhary said in a written reply in the Lower House.
To a question on the actual net Central GST collection compared to the Revised Estimates (RE), Chaudhary said net CGST collection was 96.7 per cent of the RE in 2024-25 fiscal. Net CGST includes CGST+Integrated GST+ Compensation Cess). Actual collection stood at over Rs10.26 lakh crore in FY25, as against RE of nearly Rs10.62 lakh crore. In FY24, net CGST collection was over Rs9.57 lakh crore, or 100.1 per cent of the RE of over Rs9.56 lakh crore.

Assam govt realises ₹7.5 cr from Haryana-based company for evading tax
The Assam government on Wednesday realised ₹7.5 crore for tax evasion from a Haryana-based company involved in constructing a four-lane road from Dhemaji to Oyan in Arunachal Pradesh, an official said. Investigations have so far revealed an estimated tax evasion of around ₹ 64 crore. A 12-member team from Guwahati conducted an investigation into tax evasion allegations against Kaluwala Construction Private Limited over six days. The company failed to provide adequate justification for several discrepancies identified in their GST profile during the verification process, the official said. IT exports climb 12.5% to $224 billion in FY25: MeitY
India's information technology exports rose 12.48% in fiscal 2024-25, accelerating from the prior year's 2.83% growth, to an estimated $224.4 billion from $199.5 billion, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology ( MeitY ) informed Parliament on Wednesday, citing data from industry body Nasscom Despite the pandemic and trade war-induced volatility, IT exports had remained on the growth path for the past 5-years. However, the growth rates had swung wildly, from 3.4% in FY21 to 17.01% in FY22, 8.98% in FY23 and 2.83% in government credits the expansion in IT exports to its Software Technology Park of India (STPI) scheme. STPI-registered units recorded Rs 10.64 lakh crore of exports in Centre has expanded the scheme beyond major cities, with as many as 60 of the 68 STPI centres now being located in tier-2 and -3 cities, MeitY said. These units employed 298,000 people in non-metro cities as on March the past fiscal year, 15 new Centres of Entrepreneurship (CoEs) have been established, bringing the total number to 24, the ministry said. Across these CoEs, startups had reported 9,800 jobs in non-metro a total outlay of Rs 445.77 crore, STPI has so far supported 1,121 startups through various schemes and programmes of MeitY. Of this amount, Rs 39.86 crore was disbursed as direct funding to 590 startups during the last three financial years, the ministry the last five years, STPI has established nine new incubation centres in locations such as Bihar's Bhagalpur and Darbhanga, Odisha's Jajpur and Koraput, and Nagaland's capital Kohima, it added.
