Pinarayi Vijayan to open economic & statistical affairs surveys on Aug 25

1 2 3 4 T'puram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the new surveys implemented by the department of economic and statistical affairs on Aug 25. Starting from 2025-26, the state will also participate in the Periodic Labour Force Survey and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises, which are implemented nationwide by the ministry of statistics and the national statistics office. This will enable the govt to plan and implement new schemes that will assist the youth and jobseekers in the state, said a statement. Crucial statistics related to employment sectors, human resources and the workforce in the state as well as indicators like labour force participation rate, worker population ratio and unemployment rate are obtained through the Periodic Labour Force Survey. The Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises collects data on various economic activities of establishments related to production, trade and other service sectors (excluding the manufacturing sector) in the unorganised non-agricultural sector. This survey gathers statistics on the economic activities, employment opportunities, capital investment and the use of digital technology in unorganised establishments. With the state's participation in these surveys implemented by the National Statistics Office, it will be possible to make the previously state-level statistics available at the district level. Ensuring the availability of these statistics at the district level will facilitate the planning of schemes suitable for the ever-changing employment sectors and the preparation of various estimates for calculating district-level income, said the statement. Merchants seek urgent action as roadwork delay hits festive sales in Muvattupuzha

Kochi: Long delay in completing renovation of 1.5-km MC Road stretch in Muvattupuzha town has left local merchants reeling from losses, especially during Onam festive season. Traders say prolonged work by public works department (PWD) has crippled business activity, with customers avoiding congested and dug-up streets. They have urged state govt to intervene immediately and ensure that work is carried out round the clock. Recently, Muvattupuzha merchants' association staged a symbolic protest, accusing authorities and contractors of negligence and an unacceptably slow pace of roadwork in the town. Association president Ajmal Chakkungal told TOI that hospitals and several businesses were being forced to shut temporarily due to the disruption. He alleged that inadequate monitoring, shortage of workers and poor coordination between departments were dragging the project into indefinite delays. According to the association, lack of essential construction materials also stalled progress. "Merchants in Muvattupuzha were the most affected in 2018 and 2019 floods in the state, following which Covid-19 pandemic affected businesses. It is at a juncture when merchants were slowly recovering that the long delay in roadworks is causing distress to people's lives," said Ajmal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Merchants blamed both contractor and PWD officials for the situation, warning that if work does not speed up, further protests will follow. They insist that nighttime construction and deployment of additional machinery are the only ways to bring the project back on track and rescue the town's economy from its current standstill. Russia claims more villages, Ukraine says rebuffed attack

Russian forces said on Saturday they had captured two more villages in eastern Ukraine while Kyiv said it was pushing back a rapid Russian advance that had pierced through its defences. The latest developments in the war came hours after US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks on ending the conflict, with few visible results. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo The Ukrainian army, smaller and less equipped than Russia's, has been on the defensive for months as Russian forces advance slowly but steadily. Russia's defence ministry said its troops had taken the village of Kolodyazi in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region and the village of Vorone in the neighbouring Dnipropetrovsk region. Live Events Kyiv and Ukrainian military analysts from the website Deepstate did not confirm the advances. Russian troops earlier this week broke through Ukrainian lines in one part of the Donetsk region near the town of Dobropillia, close to an important road connecting key cities in the area. Ukraine said it sent reinforcements and claimed Friday to have re-taken six villages. "For a second consecutive day we have been successful in extremely difficult sectors in the Dobropillia and Pokrovsk directions," Zelensky said on social media on Saturday. "The destruction of occupiers who tried to infiltrate deeper into our positions continues," he said, adding that Ukraine had also captured an "important" number of Russian POWs. Zelensky also repeated his warnings about possible further Russian attacks "in the coming days". "The Russian army may try to increase pressure and strikes against Ukrainian positions in order to create more favorable political circumstances for talks with global actors," he said. Russia has pushed into Ukrainian territory for almost 3.5 years, occupying large swathes of the east and south of the country. Russia's invasion of Ukraine, launched by Putin in February 2022, has killed thousands. Russia launched 85 attack drones and a ballistic missile at Ukraine overnight, Kyiv said Saturday, hours after the Putin-Trump talks in Alaska. The highly anticipated meeting in the remote US state ended with no breakthrough in halting Russia's more than three-year-long Ukraine invasion. Ukraine's air force said Moscow had "attacked with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 85 Shahed-type" drones, while also attacking "frontline areas" in four regions. In its daily report, the air force said the attacks took place "on the night of August 16" and starting in the evening of August 15 -- when Putin and Trump held their negotiations. Kyiv said its air defences shot down 61 of the drones.
