Next up at No. 4 is defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, the first coach to make an appearance on the list, who is tasked with getting the most out of a veteran defense.

2024 recap
Allen's 2024 season was one to forget for the veteran coach. He entered his third season as the head coach for the New Orleans Saints, and the team seemed to be turning the corner after a 9-8 year in 2023 that almost resulted in a division title. New Orleans had a dependable veteran quarterback in Derek Carr and some talented playmakers with running back Alvin Kamara and wide receiver Chris Olave, but Allen couldn't bring his team to have sustained success. After a 2-7 start to the 2024 season, the Saints fired Allen and turned their attention towards the future. It was Allen's second head coaching stint after spending three and a half years with the (then) Oakland Raiders.
2025 outlook
Despite his shortcomings as a head coach, Allen was one of the more highly regarded defensive minds on the market. Prior to taking over for Sean Payton as the Saints head coach, Allen was an excellent defensive coordinator. He got the most out of a number of Pro Bowl players and helped develop stars such as Trey Hendrickson and Marshon Lattimore. The Bears saw the potential to pair Allen with new head coach Ben Johnson to give him a veteran presence to work with, while also providing the defense with a proven coach who can get the most out of the unit.
Big question: What will the defense look like under Allen?
For the last few seasons, the Bears deployed a relatively standard 4-3 defense under former head coach Matt Eberflus with varying degrees of success. With Allen now leading the group, what exactly will be different? We know Allen prefers to work with bigger defensive linemen and could opt to move players around, such as Dayo Odeyingbo and Gervon Dexter. At linebacker, the Bears may be swapping linebackers TJ Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds to mix things up and disguise coverages, and the secondary will likely feature more man coverage with Jaylon Johnson shadowing top receivers instead of sticking at one spot. Through a few days of camp, the Bears offense is already feeling Allen's defense and what they can do. Hopefully opposing teams will have a similar experience.

Longhorns tight end named to Biletnikoff Award watch list
Over the last few months, the Texas Longhorns roster has undergone significant changes. They have been busy in the transfer portal, adding some of the best talent in the nation, including Jack Endries. On Wednesday, the Longhorns' new tight end made national headlines. He was named to the preseason watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, which is given annually to the best receiver in college football regardless of position. The Monte Vista High School product is coming off a very productive 2024 campaign. Last year, with Cal, he led the Bears in receiving yards with 623 and receptions with 56. He was one of the best at his position in the ACC, finishing third among all tight ends in receiving yards. As Endries proved to be a reliable option in the passing game, he had a few unforgettable performances. That included a pair of 100-yard receiving games, with one coming against Pitt and the other against NC State. He was also a human highlight reel in the Art of LA Bowl against UNLV, hauling in seven receptions for 61 yards. Although the last few months have been full of change for Endries, he is joining a program that specializes in developing tight ends. Gunnar Helm was the latest success story and was drafted by the Tennessee Titans just a few months ago. Endries will be looking to follow in his footsteps while catching passes from Arch Manning. In two seasons at Cal, Endries showed just how good he can be. He finished his Bears career with 91 receptions for 1,030 receiving yards and four touchdowns. The Longhorns' newest weapon was also a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy in 2023. That is an award that his new teammate, Michael Taaffe, is familiar with. While Endries ' focus will be on making a good first impression, he will also be watching how voting for the Biletnikoff Award plays out. The semifinalists will be revealed on Nov. 25. A few weeks later, on Dec. 11, the winner will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN. Endries, like many in Austin, hopes he will hear his name called.

Broncos salary cap update after Courtland Sutton and Zach Allen extensions
Going into training camp two weeks ago, the Denver Broncos had a little more than $12.5 million in salary cap space. After making four roster moves and giving contract extensions to wide receiver Courtland Sutton and defensive lineman Zach Allen, the team has around $5,545,012 remaining, according to an estimate from Allen will have a salary cap hit of $14.345 million this season and Sutton will have a cap hit of $13.9 million. Allen's cap charge will skyrocket to $28.625 million in 2026 while Sutton's will take a small jump up to $13.975 million. Allen and Sutton are the team's third- and fourth-biggest cap hits this year, only behind guard Ben Powers ($17.425 million) and right tackle Mike McGlinchey ($23.775 million). The team's biggest cap bargains this season include running back J.K. Dobbins ($2.065 million), safety Talanoa Hufanga ($3,411,765) and quarterback Bo Nix ($4,230,265). Other players who could be next in line for extensions include outside linebacker Nik Bonitto and defensive linemen John Franklin-Myers and Malcolm Roach.
