Amit Shah advocates for promotion of Indian languages in governance to foster national unity
NEW DELHI: Home minister
Amit Shah
on Thursday said the govt was committed to ensure that its diverse languages become a powerful medium to connect people, unlike the past few decades when efforts, though unsuccessful, were focused on making language a tool to break the country.
Addressing the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the department of official language here, Shah insisted that governance must be conducted in local languages for the country to move forward with self-respect, based on its culture. Mentioning the resolve to break free from the slavery mindset — one of the 'Panch Pran' given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi — Shah said it can only be fulfilled only if a person takes pride in his own language and develops an ability to express, think, analyse and make decisions in that language.
'Indian languages should be used as much as possible in government work, not only in the Central government but also in the state governments. For this, we will also help the state governments, encourage them and try to convince them,' he said.
Stating that 'our roots, traditions, history, identity and cultural way of life cannot progress if disconnected from language,' the home minister said efforts to promote and preserve all Indian languages, including Hindi, would be made in the coming days.
'Hindi is a friend of all languages and together, Hindi and other Indian languages enhance our self-pride,' he said while adding that there should not be any opposition to foreign language either.
'No state can ever become great by neglecting its mother tongue and the Modi govt has made many efforts to honour and dignify its languages,' he said while mentioning the recognition of Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali as classical languages.
Shah said Indian languages are getting an unprecedented boost in the field of technology, education and administration and asked all state governments to take the initiative to impart medical and engineering education in local language.
'New Education Policy-2020 lays emphasis on teaching mother-tongue and local language up to Class 5 and 8. 95% of the applicants for post of constable in Central armed police forces are now taking the examination in their mother tongue,' he shared.
Shah said that the Modi govt, over the past 11 years, has launched events like Kashi-Tamil Sangamam, Kashi-Telugu Sangamam, Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam, Shashwat Mithila Mahotsav and Bhasha Sangam under the 'Ek Bharat, Shreshta Bharat' program. He said that as part of Bhasha Sangam, a program is being run in every school to teach students 100 commonly used sentences in the 22 languages recognised by the Constitution.
He hailed the 'Hindi Shabdsindhu' initiative by the department of official language, saying that it would make the official language more accepted, flexible and comprehensive by enriching it with commonly spoken works, regardless of their origin.
Also appreciating the establishment of Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag - which enables translation of official files from Hindi to other official languages and vice versa — the home minister said it would assist in seamless coordination and communication between the Centre and states.

Jal Shakti Minister Paatil reaffirms position on IWT, revival of Tulbul project
The Modi government put the IWT in abeyance as part of a diplomatic response to the 22 April terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Pahalgam which left 26 dead. The government had said the treaty will be in abeyance until Pakistan gives credible proof that it is renouncing support for cross-border terrorism. 'The decision that the Indian government has taken, our prime minister has taken to put the IWT in abeyance continues… It is in the interest of the country. Any action that is taken will be in the interest of everyone and for the benefit of the country,' Paatil told a press conference here. New Delhi: There is no change in India's position of keeping the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance and any further decision taken on it will be in India's interest, Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Paatil said Thursday. He also asserted the Tulbul navigation project on Kashmir's Wular Lake will be revived. The World Bank-brokered 1960 treaty between India and Pakistan allows India unrestricted rights over waters of the three eastern rivers on the Indus basin—Ravi, Beas and Sutlej—which account for approximately 20 percent of the water carried by the Indus system. Pakistan is allowed unrestricted use of waters of the three western rivers — Indus, Jhelum and Chenab—which is roughly 80 percent of the water carried by the Indus system. Asked about Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement in an interview to Times of India that IWT will not be restored, Paatil said, 'Amit Shahji bade neta hain, nirnayak bhi hain…unhone jo kaha hai, theek hi hoga (Amit Shahji is a big leader, he is decisive also…whatever he has said should be correct)'. On Pakistan writing to India to renegotiate the IWT, Paatil said, 'Pakistan writing to us is not new… these things go on. But no action has been taken on it so far.' Responding to former Pakistani foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto's statement Islamabad would not hesitate to respond if its water rights were violated, Paatil said, 'Bilawal Bhutto has said many things, but we are not afraid of his comments. Hum gidar bhabhkiyon se nahin darte (We are not scared by blusters).' Also Read: With Indus Waters Treaty on hold, India working to revive Tulbul project on Kashmir's Wular Lake 'Tulbul project will be revived' The government is also expediting work on four proposed hydro projects on the western rivers. But Paatil declined to give further details of the projects, saying it's too early for that. Government sources said the four projects include the 1,856-MW Sawalkot hydroelectric project (Chenab), the 930-MW Kirthai-II hydroelectric power project (Chenab), the 260-MW Dulhasti Stage-II (Chenab) and the 240-MW Uri-I Stage-II (Jhelum). All of these are in Jammu & Kashmir, and long-term projects. In the short-term, India has started regular flushing (a sediment removal method) of its existing reservoirs on the western rivers to remove silt and sediment that have deposited in them. The IWT allows flushing of reservoirs in August during monsoon. In the absence of regular flushing, silt and sediments get deposited in the reservoirs over a period of time and render them ineffective in the long run. Paatil, however, confirmed that the government has decided to revive the Tulbul navigation project. 'We will study the Detailed Project Report for Tulbul before deciding,' the minister said. The project, which envisages constructing a 439-ft long and 40-ft wide barrage with a storage capacity of 0.30 million acre feet below the Wular Lake near Ningli to stabilise Jhelum's water level, was abandoned midway in 1987 after strong objections from Pakistan. Civil works, including concrete piling and foundation works on the left bank were already completed by then. ‘Anti-constitutional': Cong slams RSS over call to review terms ‘Socialist', ‘Secular' in Constitution's Preamble
'The thinking of the RSS-BJP is anti-constitutional. Now, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale has demanded a change in the preamble of the Constitution,' the Congress said in a post on X. In a post in Hindi on X, the Congress said it will never allow the BJP-RSS 'conspiracy' to succeed and will oppose any such move. New Delhi, Jun 26 (PTI) The Congress on Thursday accused the RSS and the BJP of being 'anti-constitutional' after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale called for reviewing the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Constitution. The party claimed that Hosabale wants the words 'socialist' and 'secular' to be removed from the preamble. 'This is a conspiracy to destroy Baba Saheb's Constitution, which the RSS-BJP has been hatching for long,' the Congress said. The opposition party claimed that when the Constitution was implemented, the RSS opposed it and burnt its copies. 'In the Lok Sabha elections, BJP leaders were openly saying that they needed more than 400 seats in Parliament to change the Constitution, but the people taught them a lesson. 'Now, once again, they are engaged in their conspiracies, but Congress will not let their intentions succeed at any cost. Hail Constitution,' the Congress said. The RSS, the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP, on Thursday called for reviewing the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Constitution, saying they were added during the Emergency and were never part of the Constitution drafted by B R Ambedkar. Addressing an event here organised on the Emergency, Hosabale said, 'The preamble of the Constitution, Baba Saheb Ambedkar never had these words. During the Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not work, the judiciary became lame, then these words were added.' He said discussions were held on this issue later, but no effort was made to remove them from the preamble. 'So, whether they should remain in the preamble should be considered,' he added.
