Misfiring Chiefs fail to reach the MTN8 again

A point is not enough for Nabi's Chiefs to finish in the top eight.

Kaizer Chiefs will not play in the MTN8 for the second season in a row after a goalless draw with Polokwane City at FNB Stadium in their final Betway Premiership match of the season.
While Amakhosi have lifted the Nedbank Cup, their first trophy in a decade, this has been a miserable end to their Premiership campaign.
Chiefs' Premiership misery is complete
Chiefs failed to win any of their last nine league matches. It remains to be seen if winning the cup is enough to keep head coach Nasreddine Nabi in his job.
As Chiefs failed to find a way past a side that had not kept a clean sheet in its last nine matches, sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr and football manager Bobby Motaung did not exactly look best pleased in the director's box.
Nabi handed Tashreeq Morris a first start for Chiefs in over a month, but it didn't last long.
Morris struggled against Polokwane City's defence and the Chiefs coach hauled him off before half time.
Chiefs were getting more joy down City's flanks, particularly on the right wing. In the 20th minute, Dillon Solomons broke forward and thundered a shot back off the post. Morris failed to get enough power on his header from the rebound, and City's Kenyan 'keeper Brian Bwire easily gathered.
Chiefs also came close to grabbing the lead on the half hour mark. Mduduzi Shabalala's cross, was touched by Bwire straight to Inacio Miguel. But the Angolan defender, sporting his new blonde haircut, could direct the ball into an empty net.
City's glorious chance
City were not creating much, but they did waste a glorious chance to take the lead in the 33rd minute.
Mokibelo Ramabu danced past Bradley Cross and slid a ball across the face of goal. But Bonginkosi Dlamini, arriving at the far post, somehow managed to shoot wide.
In the 40th minute, Solomons did well to win a free kick and Cross' delivery found Edmilson Dove. The Mozambican's header hit the top of the crossbar and went out of play.
Nabi brought on Mfundo Vilakazi for the second half, the Chiefs youngster fresh from winning the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations with Amajita.
It was a scrappy start to the second stanza. Glody Lilepo was booked for raising an elbow and then Thato Letshedi was also shown yellow for a cynical challenge on Ashley Du Preez.
Letshedi was actually fortunate, because he should really have also been booked for a first half foul on Solomons.
Chiefs hit the woodwork again
Chiefs came close again on the hour mark as Solomons found space on the right and his cross clipped the bar, before Lilepo's shot was saved by Bwira.
In the 64th minute, Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart stopped to head in from a corner, but his effort was cleared off the line by Langelihle Ndlovu.
Three minutes later, Lilepo did brilliantly to find Du Preez in the box, but the Chiefs striker volleyed his chance just over the bar.
City almost won it in stoppage time as Ramabu's long range shot deflected off Miguel and Brandon Peterson sprung to his left to produce a fine save.
Chiefs were then left screaming for a penalty as Vilakazi went down in the box, but referee Moreki Lekwape waved their appeals away.

Rassie Erasmus picks Varsity Cup star among Bok rookies

Winger Ntokozo Makhaza is one of nine uncapped players in a 54-man Springbok squad named by Rassie Erasmus for the start of the world champions' 2025 season. The Boks face the Barbarians at Cape Town Stadium on June 28, followed by three Tests – against Italy (in Pretoria and Gqeberha on July 5 and 12) and Georgia (in Mbombela, July 9). The squad, which was confirmed today, includes 31 world cup winners and consists of 30 forwards and 24 backs. Makhaza, who helped the UCT Ikeys win the 2025 Varsity Cup in April, is in line to represent the Boks for the first time with Marnus van der Merwe, Neethling Fouche, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Cobus Wiese, Renzo du Plessis, Vincent Tshituka, Juarno Augustus and Ethan Hooker. While Fouche and Hooker were members of the Springbok training squad last season, Tshituka and Augustus had a taste of the senior international structures after being included in the Springbok Showdown Green and Gold squads in 2020. With the Vodacom Bulls, Sharks and Leinster still in the race for the URC final, along with their teammates from Bath, Leicester Tigers and Sale Sharks, who will contest the Premiership semi-finals this week, a staggered approach will be adopted to those players joining the camp. MORE: Baa Baas get 170-cap boost for Bok clash The available players, which include the full Japan-based contingent following the conclusion of their season, will assemble in Johannesburg on Sunday and begin their on-field preparations on Monday. The rest of the players will join the squad as they complete their club commitments. Five players, meanwhile, were not considered for selection due to injuries: Frans Malherbe, Elrigh Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon, Deon Fourie and Trevor Nyakane. 'We used a total of 50 players last season to balance the load on them, while at the same time building towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, and with a few more talented youngsters in this group, we hope that they will learn valuable lessons and stake a strong claim for places in what will be a challenging, yet exciting season,' said Erasmus. The squad will train from Monday to Friday, before returning home for the weekend to spend time with their families, and will reassemble on Sunday, 15 June for the second week of training, before travelling to Cape Town for the Barbarians match. Full Springbok Squad: Forwards: Cameron Hanekom, Wilco Louw, Ruan Nortje, Gerhard Steenekamp, Marco van Staden, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Cobus Wiese (all Bulls), Eben Etzebeth, Vincent Koch, Siya Kolisi, Ntuthuko Mchunu, Ox Nche, Vincent Tshituka (Sharks), Neethling Fouche, Salmaan Moerat (Stormers), Renzo du Plessis, Asenathi Ntlabakanye (Lions), Juarno Augustus (Northampton Saints), Jean-Luc du Preez (Sale Sharks), Pieter-Steph du Toit (Toyota Verblitz), Thomas du Toit (Bath), Lood de Jager (Wild Knights), Jean Kleyn (Munster), Malcolm Marx (Kubota Spears), Franco Mostert (Honda Heat), Kwagga Smith (Shizuoka Blue Revs), RG Snyman (Leinster), Marnus van der Merwe (Scarlets), Jasper Wiese (Urayasu D-Rocks). Backs: Lukhanyo Am, Andre Esterhuizen, Aphelele Fassi, Jaden Hendrikse, Jordan Hendrikse, Ethan Hooker, Makazole Mapimpi, Grant Williams (Sharks), Kurt-Lee Arendse, Willie le Roux, Canan Moodie (Bulls), Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Manie Libbok, Damian Willemse (Stormers), Quan Horn, Morne van den Berg, Edwill van der Merwe (Lions), Damian de Allende (Wild Knights), Faf de Klerk, Jesse Kriel (Canon Eagles), Cheslin Kolbe (Tokyo Sungoliath), Handre Pollard (Leicester Tigers), Cobus Reinach (Montpellier), Ntokozo Makhaza (UCT). Flemming Berg owes Sundowns fans answers

Under his leadership, Sundowns have lost three domestic cup finals, in addition to last Sunday's Champions League decider. Mamelodi Sundowns sporting director Flemming Berg during the Betway Premiership match against TS Galaxy at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on February 22, 2025 in Pretoria, South Africa. (Photo by Lefty Shivambu/Gallo Images) If there was ever a time for Mamelodi Sundowns sporting director Flemming Berg to speak, it is now. It cannot be business as usual after the fiasco of the two-legged CAF Champions League final defeat to Pyramids FC. Since the Dane arrived at Chloorkop in 2022, he has deliberately stayed away from the media. Aside from a few brief press conference appearances and in-house interviews, Berg has never meaningfully engaged the public on his football philosophy or his mandate at the Brazilians. ALSO READ: Sundowns legend wants Cardoso and Berg gone after CAF failure I have previously raised this issue, insisting that the Masandawana faithful deserve better. They deserve to know the direction in which he is taking the club. From what I understand, he makes no secret of the fact that he doesn't care what the outside public thinks of him. Problematic attitude That kind of attitude is not only problematic, it also deepens the disconnect between the club and its sporting director. Engaging the fans through various media platforms would go a long way in calming the storm that followed their 2024/25 Champions League final shock defeat. Fans are understanding and they will support him if they feel that he is genuinely listening, rather than speaking at them through short press clippings. In his first three full seasons in charge after being officially announced as the sporting director in April 2022, Berg has delivered three Premiership titles. He may also claim the African Football League triumph, but what the fans truly crave is the CAF Champions League. Under his leadership, Sundowns have lost three domestic cup finals, in addition to last Sunday's champions league decider. On that basis alone, his tenure has been somewhat underwhelming. ALSO READ: Agent confirms exit of two Sundowns players Berg now finds himself alienating a growing number of Sundowns supporters with some of his decisions. The outrage over the champions league defeat has been simmering beneath the surface for some time. The first major frustration was the decision to part ways with Rulani Mokwena, who came close to completing an unbeaten season. Berg may not have absolute power to make changes, but he is a central figure in football decisions at the Betway Premiership champions. It's clear that Mokwena's main shortcoming was his failure to deliver Africa's most prestigious club competition. If that is the yardstick by which success is measured, then surely the current situation can't be allowed to continue following the loss to Pyramids FC. Berg now faces a significant decision, and so does the club because this is a problem of their own making. Sundowns at the World Club Cup While I don't expect much from Sundowns at the FIFA Club World Cup, a poor showing will not only push supporters over the edge, but also intensify the scrutiny of Berg's time in South Africa. I have already shared my views on the ill-advised omission of club captain Themba Zwane, so I won't revisit that here. ALSO READ: OPINION: Cardoso's Themba Zwane snub was nonsensical But in the absence of proper public discourse, it is clear that major changes are needed. The root cause of the growing discontent among the club's loyal fan base appears to point in one direction: the office of the sporting director.

Orlando Pirates eyeing highly-rated youngster amid Saleng saga!

Orlando Pirates have already made themselves busy ahead of the upcoming offseason window, and it seems the next player in their sights is Zimbabwean 16-year-old Prince Ndlovu. 'He (Ndlovu) trained with Pirates in March 2023 and and at that time he was only 16-years-old. He was preparing to go to Europe but things didn't work out,' a source revealed. 'It's believed that since then Pirates scouts have apparently been monitoring him and now they are willing to give him a chance at the team. They have kept tabs on him and they are impressed by his progress at Highlanders FC in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.' Monnapule Saleng's future at Orlando Pirates seems to have passed the point of no return following nearly six months on the sideline amid salary demands that club refused to meet. The latest news on the winger's future points to a shock move to Kaizer Chiefs, with whom he has reportedly signed a pre-contract with, however, this is yet to be confirmed. Sowetan legend Benedict Vilakazi doesn't approve of this move for the 27-year-old, saying, 'Is he (Saleng) that type of a player that can really play for Chiefs, the way they are playing? I don't think so.' 'An example, look at (Gaston) Sirino [at Kaizer Chiefs], he's no more the Sirino we knew at Sundowns, because of the type of players surrounding him.' 'What's happening to Sirino now, is the same thing that happened to Khama Billiat. The same thing that happened to Keagan Dolly and now it's happening to Sirino, you cannot have Sirino alone and not have other good players surrounding him.' 'Obviously he's going to have a lot on his shoulders. So, he needs support. So even if Saleng goes and plays for Kaizer Chiefs, he's going to struggle like Sirino is struggling, because there's no core at Chiefs that is very strong, that when everyone comes in (they fit in) like puzzles. Those pazzles at Chiefs are scattered.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
