Should Moja Love cancel its Isencane Lengane show?

TimesLIVE22-04-2025
Viewers of Moja Love's controversial reality TV show Isencane Lengane are calling for the show's cancellation due to its alleged depiction of abuse.
The show follows the lives of a young married couple, Siyacela Dlamuka and Thando Msomi, who got married when they were teenagers.
A recent episode sparked outrage among viewers, with many raising concerns about the couple's alleged toxicity.
It's not the first time viewers have expressed outrage about the airing of the show.
In January 2023, the couple was seen involved in a heated argument, with Dlamuka becoming violent.
The channel said they 'intervened as the incident was happening' and contacted the police, who gave Msomi the option to open a case against her partner, which she declined.
Head of channel at Moja Love, Bokani Moyo, said airing the episode was a way to depict what was happening in communities today.
'As a channel, we take violence of any sort seriously, and we do not condone or support GBV in any way. It was important to air this episode of Isencane Lengane, as it is our social responsibility to educate our audiences and mirror what is happening in our communities.'
Moja Love was later allegedly fined R50,000 by the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa for airing an episode of Isencane Lengane that depicted domestic violence.

OPINION: Chimaev's fighting style is effective, but it's not very entertaining

You can't help but wonder whether the new champion will be good for the sport. Yes, he may the best middleweight mixed martial arts fighter in the world, and yes, he is now the champion, but just how good is this result for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)? Undefeated Russian, Khamzat Chimaev, put on a wrestling masterclass when he completely dominated South Africa's middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis at UFC319 in Chicago on Sunday. As a fan of the sport, I am slightly worried about what impact this is going to have on a division synonymous with spectacular knockouts and bone-breaking submissions. Yes, what Chimaev did on Sunday was effective, but as far as entertainment value goes, fans aren't going to be queueing to watch two high-profile athletes lie on the ground for 25 minutes to determine who is the best in the world. According to online sources, the cheapest ticket to watch that fight at the United Centre was $700 (over R12,000) and the most expensive was over $11,000 (over R193,000). Even the pay-per-view tickets to watch the fight at home would have set you back $60 (over R1,000). Now I would be extremely annoyed if I coughed up that sort of money to watch what unfolded on Sunday. Fans must get what they pay for Yes, there were other fights on the cards and, yes, they were a lot better than the main event, but the reality is it is the main event that sells the tickets. The previous champions – Israel Adesanya, Sean Strickland, Robert Whitaker and Du Plessis – made sure the fans got what they paid for, putting up exciting displays of mixed martial arts, even when the fights went the distance. Chimaev – who has a reported 10 million followers on Instagram – is an extremely popular figure, but even he was booed by the sold-out crowd in Chicago on Sunday. The middleweight division is extremely stacked with plenty of exciting talent coming through the ranks – Du Plessis being on that list, and he's sure to be back contending again – but the question now must be, can anyone stop this Russian? At the end of the day, it is the fans who make or break sport, and if they aren't happy, then you have a problem.

Tearful Glen Gabela pleads for help as fridge lies empty

Former Uzalo actor Glen Gabela has become the latest South African star to appeal for donations after falling on hard times. Gabela, who portrayed Pastor Mdletshe on the popular SABC1 soapie, shared a heartfelt plea in a video circulating on social media. In the emotional clip, Glen tearfully asks for assistance, showing his nearly empty fridge, which contains nothing but containers of water. 'I want a decent life, to be treated with dignity like every normal person. That's why I am reaching out. I'm trying to engage with people because I want to grow the film industry, so that young and upcoming performers don't end up like us,' he said 'You listen to the stories of top actors when they pass [away], you listen to the stories told and how they struggled. Almost all of us, when we reach this age, reach a stage where we … it's a pity I am not able to ask for help. It's hard for me to ask for help. That's all I need, just to live decently, I don't need to be rich, I just need to live a decent life,' he added. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sannah Mcunu (@sanamchunu7) Another star who recently spoke out about her financial challenges is veteran actress Nandi Nyembe. The 55-year-old bravely opened up in an emotional video shared by Masingita Masunga from the Above Normal Foundation. In the video, Nandi shared that she has faced financial struggles, particularly after paying R88,000 for her son's medical care. 'From the money I've worked for, my son got sick. I don't have money. How are you going to get medical aid when you don't have money? I tried to get a company that's a bit cheaper. What are you going to pay it with every month?' Some artists who have previously come out to plead for help due to financial difficulties include Pebetsi Matlaila, Dr Malinga, Zahara, Brenda Ngxoli, Carla Radebe, and Vusi Thanda.
