‘When You Turn 75, Make Way For Others': RSS Chief's Remark Sparks Buzz In Opposition Camp

Mohan Bhagwat and PM Modi are turning 75 this September. The RSS chief's remarks were used by the Opposition to target the Prime Minister.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat's open-ended remark suggesting stepping aside after attaining the age of 75 has drawn comments from the Opposition, which took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who turns 75 this year.
Bhagwat himself will turn 75 on September 11 this year, six days ahead of PM Modi, who has been speculated time and again by the Opposition to retire after attaining this age.
Speaking at a book launch event on Wednesday evening, Bhagwat said, 'When you turn 75, it means you should stop now and make way for others."
Recalling late RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle's words, 'Moropant Pingle once said that if you are honoured with a shawl after turning 75, it means that you should stop now, you are old, step aside and let others come in."
Politics heated up after his remarks, but what's more interesting about Bhagwat's comments is the timing, as he and PM Modi are set to touch the 75 age mark in September 2025.
The RSS chief's statement was seen by several Opposition leaders as a veiled message to PM Modi.
'PM Modi forced leaders like LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and Jaswant Singh to retire after they turned 75. Let's see if he applies the same rule to himself now," Shiv Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut said.
Congress leader Abhishke Manu Singhvi said, 'Preaching without practice is always dangerous. It is unprincipled that the Margdarshak Mandal was given compulsory retirement applying the 75 years age limit, but indications are clear that the current dispensation will be exempted from this rule."
The BJP has clarified in the past that there are no retirement plans for the Prime Minister, and he will continue to lead the government.
'Modi ji will continue to lead till 2029. There's no truth in retirement rumours," Union Home Minister Amit Shah had clarified way back in May 2023.
What's all the way more interesting is that on the day Bhagwat made his remarks, Amit Shah addressed his post-retirement plans at a separate event.
'I would like to dedicate my time to the Vedas, Upanishads, and organic farming," Shah said. He turned 60 in April this year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi soaks in spiritual experience on his visit to Gangaikonda Cholapuram

The spirit of bakthi hung in the air and Prime Minister Narendra Modi soaked in the spiritual experience during his more than two-hour visit to the Brihadisvara temple in Gangaikonda Cholapuram on Sunday. Sporting a traditional Tamil attire of white dhoti (veshti) and half-sleeve shirt with an angavastram (upper cloth), Mr. Modi offered prayers at the Shiva temple built by Rajendra Chola I, which is famous for its imposing architecture and exquisite sculptures. He was received with poorna kumbam honours. He performed aarathi to the presiding deity. Devotional renderings by maestro Ilaiyaraaja and a group of Odhuvars were held. The Odhuvars rendered the Thevaram hymns in praise of Lord Shiva, Thodudaiya Seviyan, Pithaa Piraisoodi Perumaney, and Muthaitharu Pathith Thirunagai from the Thirupugazh in praise of Lord Murugan. This was followed by the performance of the troupe led by Mr. Ilaiyaraaja. Singer Madhu Balakrishnan rendered the Om Sivahom. The maestro with his mesmerising voice rendered the Namah Shivaya Vaazhga Naadhanthaal Vaazhga and Poovar Senni Mannan of Saint Manickavasagar. The performances drew standing ovations from the Prime Minister. Moved by the spiritual atmosphere, Mr. Modi acknowledged it while speaking at the valedictory of the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival at the temple complex. Greeting the audience with 'Vanakkam Cholamandalam' (salutations to the Chola region), Mr. Modi appreciated the performances of Mr. Ilaiyaraaja and the Odhuvars. He handed over a pot of Ganga water from Kasi to the Sivachariars at the temple. The celebration of Ganga in the land of the Cauvery is also a legacy of the Chola Empire, he observed, and expressed happiness that he had once again brought Ganga water to Tamil Nadu. He viewed a thematic photo exhibition on 'Saiva Siddhanta and Chola Temple Arts', put up by the Union Ministry of Culture. Impressed by the achievements of the Cholas, he urged the people to visit the exhibition without fail. Mr. Modi released a Tamil musical album on Bhagavad Gita brought out by Chinmaya Mission and a publication on Thevaram brought out by Sahitya Akademi. He also held a roadshow on the way to the temple.

Remove non-biological PM too: Trinamool MP's taunt amid Bihar poll roll revision

In a fresh broadside against the BJP over the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee sarcastically demanded that the "non-biological" Prime Minister should be excluded from the list of eligible at an event in West Bengal's Hooghly district, Banerjee referenced PM Modi's past comments about being 'sent by God,' a remark that has since been used by several opposition leaders to mock the Prime PM Modi is non-biological and he is born spiritually as like Goddesses Kali, Durga and Lord Ram, then PM Modi is also not the Citizen of India. So his name should also be removed from the voter list,' Banerjee jibed. His taunt stems from a 2024 interview in which PM Modi said, 'Until my mother was alive, I used to think I was born biologically. After her demise, when I look at my experiences, I am convinced that I was sent by God... I'm nothing but an instrument that God has sent.'Kalyan Banerjee's remarks came amid an escalating row over the SIR process in Bihar, which opposition parties have slammed as an attempt to disenfranchise voters ahead of the assembly elections later this year. The first week of Parliament's Monsoon session was a washout due to repeated disruptions over the issue, as the Opposition demanding an immediate halt to the supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also opposed the revision drive, calling it 'nothing short of a scam.' Echoing her, Kalyan Banerjee alleged that the SIR was designed to help the BJP manipulate the electoral process.'Earlier, the voters used to decide the government of the country... Now the government of the country is deciding who can vote or not. No one's name will be in the voter list except BJP or BJP people... Election Commission is also the same,' Banerjee senior Trinamool leader questioned the logic of house-to-house verification being undertaken as part of the SIR.'What is the point of going from house to house and checking the voter list... If I don't stay in my house at that time, then my name will be removed from the voter list. How does that make any sense?' he parties in Bihar have claimed that crores of eligible voters, especially minorities and the marginalised, could be struck off the rolls due to a lack of required documentation. They have accused the BJP of using state machinery to target voters who are likely to support rival BJP has defended the SIR as a standard administrative exercise aimed at cleaning up voter rolls. However, the timing and scale of the revision have triggered political pushback just months ahead of the Bihar elections.- EndsTune InMust Watch
