Super Formula reveals 2026 season calendar with new opener
With the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka moving forward to March 29, the famous figure-of-eight venue will no longer host the first round of the Super Formula schedule next year, as it has done both in 2024 and this year.
That role has fallen to sister Honda-owned circuit Motegi, which will hold the opening round for the first time since the COVID-affected 2020 season on April 3-5.
It marks a significantly later start to the year than the current season, which began at Suzuka in early March, but that slot is understood to no longer be feasible due to the long lead time required to prepare the circuit for F1's annual visit.
Suzuka's first Super Formula date has now shifted back to May 22-24, with Autopolis moving to occupy the second round of the season on April 24-26.

The final four dates on the calendar mirror those of this year, with Fuji holding the fourth event in mid-July and the sixth round in October, Sugo maintaining its early August slot, and Suzuka acting as the venue for the season decider in November.
While all seven rounds are listed as three-day events, it remains unclear whether there will be any more double-headers on next year's calendar compared to this year.
This year's schedule is made up of 12 races, including five double-headers, with only Autopolis and Sugo being held as single-race weekends.
The provisional calendar features no overseas races, which follows Super Formula adding a date to its 2025 schedule at Inje Speedium only to abort plans to visit the South Korean venue just two months later amid disagreements with the local promoter.
Kamui Kobayashi, Toyota Gazoo Racing team principal
Next year's calendar features no clashes with the World Endurance Championship, which will come as welcome news to Kamui Kobayashi.
Toyota driver Kobayashi was forced to skip this year's Motegi round due to a conflict with the WEC's 6 Hours of Imola, being replaced at KCMG by Seita Nonaka for that weekend, but the reshuffle of dates has resolved that clash for next year.

Stewart Friesen returns home as full extent of injuries revealed
Stewart Friesen will not get to take part in the NASCAR Truck playoffs as he recovers from various injuries sustained in a serious airborne crash nine days ago. Kaden Honeycutt will drive the No. 52 truck in his absence, except for Watkins Glen this weekend, where Christopher Bell will take the wheel. Friesen was competing in a Super DIRTcar Series event, driving a Big Block Dirt Modified at Autodrome Drummond in Quebec, Canada, when the accident occurred. In the latest update provided by his wife, Jessica, she has revealed that Stewart has returned home after being released from the hospital. "Stewart continues to be in pain as he recovers, but we are very happy to have him at home to recoup before we start the physical therapy process," an official statement read, thanking the Albany Medical Center and its trauma team for their efforts. New details regarding Friesen's injuries Stewart Friesen, Halmar-Friesen Racing Toyota Jessica also revealed more details regarding the injuries he sustained when his car went airborne and was struck by another car upon landing. "The procedures to reconstruct his shattered pelvis and his right leg tibia and fibula went smoothly," the statement continued. "He has some extra plates, screws, rods, and pins as well as a fractured C7 and fractured left hip but we are thankful to finally be on the other side of these injuries and on the road to recovery." When the 42-year-old misses this weekend's race at Watkins Glen, it will be the first Truck race without Friesen in the field since Kansas Speedway in the fall of 2020. Friesen willingly skipped that race in order to compete in a Short Track Super Series event at Port Royal Speedway. He has 200 career starts in the Truck Series, including four race wins. Trump claims Japan to import F-150s amid US tariff deal uncertainty
US President Donald Trump has reportedly said that Japan is set to begin importing Ford's F-150 pickup trucks, signalling a potential misunderstanding between the two nations regarding the specifics of a trade agreement proclaimed last month, according to Bloomberg. Tokyo's chief negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, embarked on a trip to Washington with the intention of urging the Trump administration to honour its commitment to lower tariffs on automobiles and auto parts to 15% from the current 27.5%. Akazawa told reporters, 'It's worth noting that the US-UK agreement took 54 days to be implemented,' when discussing the anticipated reduction in auto tariffs upon his arrival in Washington. Speaking of Japan in a phone interview broadcast by CNBC, Trump stated: 'They're taking our cars. They're taking the very beautiful Ford F-150, which does very well. And I'm sure we'll do very well there and other things that do very well here, will also do well there.' The trade deal between the nations has been shrouded in uncertainty, raising concerns in Japan about its execution, especially concerning autos. The Trump administration's narrative on trade agreements has frequently been at odds with that of its trade partners, leading to questions about the agreements' effectiveness. Currently, the US imposes a 27.5% tariff on Japanese autos, a figure that combines an earlier 2.5% rate with a new 25% introduced by Trump. Although a reduction to 15% would alleviate some pressure, this rate would still affect the sector that is central to the Japanese economy. Optimism in Asian markets was evident as Akazawa made his ninth visit to the US, with Japan's Topix Index climbing 1%, buoyed by gains from automakers such as Toyota Motor. A point of contention remains whether the proposed 15% tariff will be an additional charge on top of current tariffs or if all current levies will be standardised to 15%, marking another potential area of misunderstanding between the two countries' interpretations of the trade deal. Despite Akazawa's assertion that tariffs will be capped at 15% and not added to existing rates, a recent executive order suggested that the 15% reduction would only apply to the European Union, not to Japan. Trump has often expressed frustration over the lack of popularity of US cars in Japan, but many experts believe this is due to the absence of models suited to the Japanese market, rather than trade barriers. The Ford F-150 mentioned by Trump may limit its practicality on Japan's narrower roads, where many are less than four metres wide for two lanes, as per government data from 2012. In the CNBC interview, Trump likened the $550bn investment package agreed upon with Japan in the trade deal to a "signing bonus". However, the Japanese have clarified that only a small fraction of this amount will constitute actual investment, with the remainder being loans and loan guarantees. Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has stated that these investments, driven by private companies, will serve the interests of both countries.
