Celtics reportedly trade Porzingis to Hawks as Kyrie Irving signs $119m Mavs extension
Kristaps Porzingis is being traded by the Boston Celtics to the Atlanta Hawks, and part of what will be a three-team deal gives the Brooklyn Nets another selection in Wednesday's first round of the NBA draft, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement.
Porzingis is going to the Hawks, while Georges Niang and a second-round pick will be acquired by Boston, and Brooklyn will wind up with Terance Mann and the No 22 pick that is held by Atlanta in Wednesday's draft, said Associated Press's source. The trade isn't expected to be finalized until the start of the new league year on 6 July.
ESPN first reported the trade, which was later confirmed by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The move is the second major one by Boston of the week, after the team agreed to trade Jrue Holiday to Portland. The combination of those moves still has Boston past the tax line for next season but out from under the second apron, which gives the Celtics – who will be without Jayson Tatum for, at minimum, a significant portion of next season because of an Achilles tear – more flexibility moving forward. Getting under the second apron is important; that threshold, once exceeded, limits ways that teams can trade for or sign players.
Porzingis – who, like Holiday, was part of the team that helped Boston win the 2024 NBA title – will make $30.7m next season on an expiring contract. He was slowed by illness at times in the second half of this past season, as well as in Boston's playoff run this spring. But he intends to play for Latvia at EuroBasket this summer, a good sign.
'Thanks for all the support and questions about my health,' Porzingis posted on social media this week. 'I've been feeling excellent all offseason and look forward to a healthy and strong European championship tournament.'
Porzingis averaged 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 42 games this season.
The Nets now technically have five picks in Wednesday's first round. They own the Nos 8, 19, 26 and 27 selections already, and the Hawks will essentially be picking for the Nets now at No 22, as well.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, sources indicated that the Dallas Mavericks and Kyrie Irving have agreed on a $119m, three-year contract with the All-Star guard still recovering from a torn ACL that will sideline him into the 2025-26 season.
The new contract will align Irving with co-star Anthony Davis, who joined the Mavericks in the seismic trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. Davis has three years remaining on his contract, with a player option that now will be the same season as Irving, 2027-28.
The agreement with Irving came on the eve of the NBA draft, with the Mavericks poised to take former Duke star Cooper Flagg with the No 1 overall pick.

White Sox ban fan for taunt about Ketel Marte's late mother
June 25 - The fan who heckled Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte about his late mother has been banned from future games at Chicago's Rate Field, the White Sox announced Wednesday. The fan, who is 22, was ejected from Tuesday night's game at the request of Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo and bench coach Jeff Banister, per the Arizona Republic. Per ESPN, the fan reportedly was very apologetic and admitted to being very inappropriate with his comments. Marte belted a solo homer in the first inning of Tuesday's 4-1 win. He was batting in the seventh when the remarks were made about his mother Elpidia Valdez, who died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in 2017. Luvollo put his arm around Marte and talked with him during a pitching change while the White Sox were batting. The manager said he heard what the fan said but declined to repeat it. "(Marte) put his head down, and I could tell it had an immediate impact on him, for sure," Lovullo said. "I could see he was sobbing. It hurt. I told him, 'I love you and I'm with you and we're all together and you're not alone. No matter what happens, no matter what was said or what you heard, that guy is an idiot. It shouldn't have an impact on you.'" Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo also consoled Marte during the pitching change. Perdomo was angry about the incident, as he told reporters afterward. "That can't happen, "Perdomo said. "Everybody knows how Ketel is. He's fun. He plays the game hard. I feel bad for him. I feel mad about it. I hope MLB can do something with that guy. I don't know who it was, but they've got to do something. We can't continue to do that (expletive) here in MLB. "(The fan) should be banned, for sure." --Field Level Media

Reports: Suspension reduced for Padres' Robert Suarez
June 25 - San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez will begin serving a reduced two-game suspension on Wednesday, multiple outlets reported. Suarez, 34, originally received a three-game ban from Major League Baseball for intentionally hitting Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani on Thursday. Suarez dropped his appeal after the suspension was reduced, per the reports. Padres manager Mike Shildt and Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts earned one-game suspensions for their roles in the conclusion to a contentious series. Suarez also was fined for beaning Ohtani in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was in response to Dodgers rookie Jack Little hitting San Diego star Fernando Tatis Jr. with a pitch in the top of that inning, which prompted a benches-clearing incident with pushing and shoving. The Padres won that game 5-3 to avoid getting swept in the four-game series in Los Angeles. Suarez, an All-Star in 2024, is 2-3 with a 3.51 ERA and a National League-leading 22 saves in 35 games this season. The right-hander has a career record of 20-10 with a 3.01 ERA and 59 saves in 171 appearances (no starts) since his MLB debut with the Padres in 2022. Suarez will sit out Wednesday's home matinee against the Washington Nationals and Friday's series opener versus the host Cincinnati Reds. --Field Level Media
