Finding the free stuff at SXSW
You don't need a badge or wristband to experience the fun of South by Southwest March 7-15.
Yes, but: Keeping up can be overwhelming. Here's a quick guide to the best free shows, parties and beyond.
Head to SXSW's official free events
SXSW officials recently announced a number of official free events, including concerts and a gig poster art exhibition March 11-13.
You can find a lineup of free concerts at Auditorium Shores on Sunday from 3-7pm, with local artists like Sir Woman, Geto Gala and Pedal Steel Noah.
Radio outlets from across the country and a collective of NPR music stations have curated a free lineup of musicians to enjoy March 10-15, 12-5pm each day in Brush Square Park.
Find brand activations
Brands spend a lot of money to take over Rainey Street businesses and other venues around downtown.
The so-called activations — like this year's Prime Video pop-up at Hotel San José, and FX's "Alien: Earth" experience — often include free music, food, drinks and other giveaways.
Pro tip: Stop by early. These spots get pretty busy, especially in the evenings, and organizers often prioritize badges and wristbands when they're at capacity.
Stop by local venues and businesses
Plenty of local hotels, bars and music venues are hosting their own unofficial SXSW events.
Check social media and event pages, but here are some to get you started:
Cosmic Saltillo: The East Austin coffee shop and cocktail bar is hosting a free showcase with music and a wellness market March 14-16. Plus, there's free yoga on the rooftop 9-10am each morning.
Hotel San José: The hotel's "South by San José" remains one of the most popular recurring free events each year. Enjoy music and shop from local vendors in the parking lot of the hotel and Jo's Coffee, March 12-16.
Yeti: Yeti's annual music showcase is back at its South Congress store 12-6pm, March 15-17.
Scholz Garten: KUTX's live morning broadcast from Scholz Garten returns to SXSW March 12-15 at 8am to noon each day. A $10 entry donation goes to the Central Texas Food Bank.
KUTX will also host a free showcase at Lefty's Brick Bar on March 12 at 7pm.
The Peach House: Lululemon's resale shop, Like New, will take over Pilates studio The Peach House for free workout classes March 8-9 and a community run on March 9.
Still Austin Whiskey: BMI's annual "Howdy Texas" party will be held at Still Whiskey, with free performances from nine Texas-based artists from March 11-14.
The bottom line: Check social media, assume you should RSVP and be prepared to pivot.
SXSW is all about going with the flow and knowing when it's time to ditch that long line to find something better.

Does Jensen Ackles' Countdown Hero Have BDE — Big Dean (Winchester) Energy? ‘There Are Familiar Aspects,' Says Supernatural Vet
In the opening minutes of Prime Video's Countdown thriller — which was created by Derek Haas (executive producer of the #OneChicago franchise and co-creator of FBI: International) — an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight. Veteran LAPD detective Mark Meachum, portrayed by Jensen Ackles, is in turn recruited to a secret task force to investigate, alongside undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement. More from TVLine For First Time, Streaming Viewing Topped Broadcast and Cable Combined in May Reacher Season 4: Sydelle Noel, Jay Baruchel and 6 Others Cast in Gone Tomorrow Adaptation Jesse Williams' Amazon Action-Drama Sets Release Date - Also, Watch a Trailer for Hotel Costiera 'Task Force Hurricane' is led by SAC Nathan Blythe (Euphoria's Eric Dane) and also includes DEA badass Amber Oliveras (All Rise's Jessica Camacho), LAPD narcotics officer Lucas Finau (Young Rock's Uli Latukefu), and FBI agents Keyonte Bell (The Boys' Elliot Knight) and Evan Shepherd (The Flash's Violett Beane). Speaking with the series' cast on Tuesday afternoon, TVLine invited the actors to describe the character played by the co-star sitting next to them. For Dane, that was Ackles. Meachum, Dane said, is 'a singular-minded, hyper-intense, highly capable taskmaster/bulldog investigator, who will not stop until the whistle blows.' Some of those adjectives could also describe Ackles' longtime TV alter ego, from The CW's Supernatural. So we asked Ackles: 'Would you say that Mark Meachum has BDE — Big Dean (Winchester) Energy?' After letting loose with a hearty laugh, Ackles nodded, 'Uh, yeah. I think you could. I think you could definitely say there's some familiarity there. 'I don't know about similarity,' he continued, 'but there are some familiar aspects to those two characters, in the fact that they are a little cavalier the way that they attack the dark forces.' Another difference is the nature of those dark forces. On Countdown, for example, they come in the form of human Belarusians with a bone to (explosively) pick. 'The biggest difference is that Mark has actual, corporeal people that he's fighting, whereas Dean Winchester is fighting ghosts, demons, witches, vampires…,' Ackles reminded with a chuckle. To do what Dean and his brother Sam (played by Jared Padalecki) did, 'You need an entire trunk full of various weapons,' Ackles added. 'But Mark, he likes his pistol.' Countdown premieres Wednesday, June 25, with its first three episodes, followed by weekly drops through Sept. 3. Want scoop on , or for any other TV show? Julie Plec on why she hopes Meryl Streep likes ‘We Were Liars'
Liar, liar. Prime Video's new teen drama 'We Were Liars' (premiering Wednesday, June 18) is a twisty summertime thriller. Based on a wildly popular novel of the same name, the show is helmed by 'The Vampire Diaries' mastermind Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie. 'What drew me to it is the deep emotional roller coaster that this story takes you on, starting from what seems just like a very simple, sweet, nostalgic coming-of-age story about first love and best friends and summer, and takes you from basically all those vibes on a very twisty-turny, surprising journey into a big tone shift,' Plec exclusively told The Post. 9 Julie Plec attends the 'We Were Liars' premiere during the 2025 Tribeca Festival at SVA Theater on June 10, 2025 in New York City. Prime 'We Were Liars' follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and her circle of cousins and friends – including Johnny (Joseph Zada), Mirren (Esther McGregor), and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) – who have adventures over the course of several summers on her affluent family's private island. But, things take a darker turn as Cadence must figure out what's happening after she loses her memory, and everyone seems to have secrets. Rounding out the cast is Candice King, Mamie Gummer, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse. 9 Emily Alyn Lind, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, and Shubham Maheshwari in 'We Were Liars.' Jessie Redmond/Prime 'Casting a big ensemble like this, where everybody is supposed to be related to each other and blonde, as in the books, is never easy,' said Plec. She added, 'Blonde, you can usually fake, and, which we did pretty well in a couple situations, but you really need to be able to believe that they're all of one piece.' For Gat, an Indian boy who is Cadence's love interest, she said, 'We looked high and low. We were able to cast the role of Gat from a beautiful young actor who had never acted for a living before at all. His audition tape was done in his dorm room on campus just before he graduated [from] university.' 9 Emily Alyn Lind and Shubham Maheshwari in 'We Were Liars.' Prime 9 Rahul Kohli, E. Getty Images for Prime Video 9 Mamie Gummer (left), Candice King, and Caitlin FitzGerald on the set of 'We Were Liars.' Instagram/candiceking Plec continued, 'We got to discover the incredible. Mamie Gummer, who's worked for years, but is stepping into her own as a leading lady.' Gummer, 41, is Meryl Streep's daughter. When asked about the probability that Streep, 75, will tune in, Plec said, 'I have alternate [thoughts] of like, 'Meh, that fine, she won't watch it, that's okay,' to 'Oh my god, Meryl Streep is probably gonna watch the show.'' She quipped, 'I just hope she likes it, to be honest.' 9 Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, and Emily Alyn Lind in 'We Were Liars.' Prime 'We Were Liars' is also America's introduction to Aussie actor Zada, who is poised to have his career take off, as he's been cast as the star of the next 'Hunger Games' movie, 'Sunrise on the Reaping.' 'I feel very proud. I know he's worked before in Australia, so somebody else gets to take credit for discovering him off the street, but Carina and I are gladly gonna take credit for discovering [him] in the United States of America,' Plec said. She recalled how during filming, Gummer even set him up for his next major role – the Netflix adaptation of 'East of Eden' starring Florence Pugh – 'because Mamie called her very good friend, Zoe Kazan, who was directing it and said, 'You gotta meet this kid. He's extraordinary.'' 9 Mamie Gummer and Joseph Zada in 'We Were Liars.' 9 Carina Adly Mackenzie, Candic King, and Julie Plec (right). Instagram/cadlymack Plec added, 'I think we knew it on set. When we were in the sound stage, the sound engineers would be like, 'God, that kid is so good.' I think we're just at the beginning of a very long, very cool road for him.' Meanwhile, Plec has done three shows to date in 'The Vampire Diaries' universe, including 'The Originals' and 'Legacies.' About whether there could be more coming, Plec said that she's not working on anything specific at the moment. However, she added, 'I have had ideas in my head for more stories in Mystic Falls for pretty much since I started telling stories in Mystic Falls,' referring to the town where 'The Vampire Diaries' took place. 'So all anybody has to do is ask, and I will be there with bells on.'
