Fardeen Khan says dad Feroz Khan threatened to throw him out of the house after first film flopped: ‘I'll put a roof over your head for a year, after that…'

Indian Express09-06-2025
Fardeen Khan made a comeback to the showbiz with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Netflix India period drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar and Mudassar Aziz's dramedy Khel Khel Mein last year and Tarun Manshukhani's ensemble whodunit comedy Housefull 5 this week. But like several second-generation actors of his generation, the first few years were rather rough.
'Of course, it was tough. Criticism was harsh,' said Fardeen, reflecting on the box office failure and negative reviews of his debut film, his late father Feroz Khan's 1998 romantic drama Prem Aggan. 'People I was suppose to be working with in my next few projects changed their mind and pulled out of the projects. Money had to be returned. It was really a good chance to sit back and think,' added Fardeen.
On the Cyrus Says podcast, Fardeen recalled Feroz Khan gave him a fair ultimatum after the Prem Aggan flopped. 'He said, 'We tried, we failed.' I'm putting a roof over your head. I'll pay you an X amount of money every month. After that, you're on your own,' said Fardeen, adding, 'It was a beautiful call. He said I've sent you to one of the best universities of the world. I hope you're prepared to deal with life. This is how life is.'
Feroz Khan told Fardeen that he was just 13 when his father died. His family had five brothers and a sister, and he had to take care of all of them. 'He said, 'I had a vision, I did it. Now, let's see what you're made of.' It was as simple as that. It was really what I had to hear at that time. His love was tough! That just speaks to the kind of guy he was,' added Fardeen.
Fardeen confessed he was more interested in filmmaking than being in front of the camera. But after coming back from film school abroad, his father decided to launch him as an actor in Prem Aggan. 'I had a director who was just not my father, but also an iconic actor. So you're just worried about not getting it wrong. You bury the pressure and put it away, especially in cases like mine whose father is so iconic in so many ways. If you think about that, you're finished. You just try and be honest to yourself and the written word on the script. And you try not to mess it up,' he said.

Fardeen also reasoned that those days, actors used to shoot on film instead of digital. 'It was a huge part of the budget. It was just about not doing anything wrong and going with the process. I had no say in the dialogues or the script because I hadn't earned my stripes in any way,' said Fardeen. Fardeen followed Prem Aggan with Ram Gopal Varma's 2000 survival thriller Jungle. Fardeen was 35 when Feroz Khan passed away in 2009.

Netflix hosts special pre-release screening of ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show' for the visually impaired

Netflix hosted a special pre-release screening of The Great Indian Kapil Show (Independence Day Special Episode) for the visually impaired community. Held at the Netflix India office in Mumbai, in collaboration with the National Association for the Blind, Mumbai, the screening was enabled with built-in audio descriptions, ensuring the episode could be fully experienced by all. In attendance at the screening were Tukaram Mundhe, IAS (Secretary, Divyang Kalyan Department, Government of Maharashtra), and Prakash Magdum, IIS (Managing Director, National Film Development Corporation of India). The cast of the show joined for a surprise and a curated talent showcase by the blind community - Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda and Archana Puran Singh, to celebrate the occasion. Netflix globally has been creating Audio Descriptions for its content since 2015. Today, all Netflix original titles come with built-in audio descriptions, a voiceover that narrates key visual elements like facial expressions, physical actions, settings, and scene changes. This makes the story more accessible for blind or low vision audiences. The platform is further enabled with additional accessibility features and plug-ins such as screen reader compatibility, customizable subtitles, and assistive listening systems to ensure that entertainment can be enjoyed by everyone, without barriers. Sharing his thoughts on the initiative, Kapil Sharma, actor and host of The Great Indian Kapil Show, added, 'As performers, there's nothing more rewarding than knowing your work can reach more hearts. Being part of this special screening, where every joke, every moment could be felt and experienced equally, was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do.' Dr. Vimal Kumar Dengla, Secretary General, National Association for the Blind, said, 'Entertainment should be for everyone, and when platforms like Netflix prioritise accessibility, it opens up a world of entertainment for our community. Audio description is more than a feature; its inclusion in action. We truly appreciate this collaboration and hope to see many more such initiatives in the future.' Boney Kapoor On Being Unable To Retain Salman, Anil, Fardeen In No Entry 2: ‘We Waited 8-10 Years…'

Boney Kapoor admits he will always regret not casting the original No Entry trio- Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Fardeen- in the sequel, but hopes the new casting decision is right. While Anees Bazmee's 2005 film 'No Entry', starring Salman Khan, Fardeen Khan, and Anil Kapoor was a massive success, its sequel, 'No Entry 2', will feature a fresh cast- with Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, and Diljit Dosanjh in the lead roles. Producer Boney Kapoor recently opened up about why he couldn't retain the original cast in the film. He admitted that he will always regret not casting Salman, Fardeen and Anil Kapoor in No Entry 2, but hopes the new casting proves to be the right decision. While speaking with Instant Bollywood, Boney Kapoor said, 'Poori star cast hi humne change ki. Toh ye humara loss hai that we could not retain the same star cast. (We've changed the entire star cast. So it's our loss that we couldn't retain the original cast). We waited for almost 8-10 years but somehow things didn't happen. We will miss them. And now we are trying to give a fresh start with a younger lot of actors. But at the same time, we will miss Salman, we will miss Anil and Fardeen. They were the original three boys in No Entry. And they were most loved." He further added, 'Waqt beet gaya wait karte karte aur aaj hum shayad new setup ke saath koi nayi cheezein usmein…ho sakta hai sab cheezein aur different ho. But maine mauka kho diya. Gaadi aage nikal gayi. Ab ye pachhtaawa hoga ki same setup nahi hai. (Time passed while we kept waiting, and today, with a new setup, maybe things will be… different. But I lost the opportunity. The train has moved on. Now there will always be this regret that the original setup isn't there). Because Salman is a fantastic guy, Anil is a fantastic guy, brother and actor. Fardeen is one of the best guys I have known in the film industry. I will miss them. But somehow, we have moved on, and let's hope the decision is right. Earlier, Peeping Moon reported that Tamannaah has officially signed the project and is reportedly excited to explore the comedy genre. She will be seen in a role similar in essence to Bipasha Basu's character from the original. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
