The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya was cracked after investigators found a 'mangalsutra' and a ring in a suitcase left behind by his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi at a homestay in Sohra, Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) I Nongrang said on Wednesday.The ornaments provided the first vital clue in what turned out to be a case of a contract killing allegedly orchestrated by Sonam and her boyfriend.advertisementRaja (29) and Sonam (25), who got married in Indore on May 11, arrived in Meghalaya via Guwahati on May 20 for their honeymoon. Raja's body was discovered in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2. Meanwhile, the search for Sonam came to an end when she surrendered in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur - almost 1,200 kilometres away - on June 9. Police also arrested her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha and three contract killers who were allegedly hired to carry out Raja's murder.DGP Nongrang revealed that the key breakthrough came when police recovered Sonam's 'mangalsutra' and a ring from the suitcase left behind at the Sohra homestay. 'A married woman leaving behind the ornaments gave us a clue to pursue her as a suspect in the case,' Nongrang said.advertisementA police officer involved in the investigation added that the couple had walked into the Sohra homestay on May 22 without any prior booking and were unable to get a room. They decided to leave their suitcases at the homestay as they planned to trek over 3,000 steps to reach Nongriat village, home to the famed double-decker living root bridge.That night, the couple stayed at a homestay in Nongriat and checked out early the next morning, May 23. After trekking back to Sohra, they retrieved their scooter from a parking area and rode to Weisawdong Falls. It was there that Raja was allegedly killed in front of Sonam by the three hired killers.Earlier, a tour guide had informed police that he saw the couple with three Hindi-speaking men while they were trekking back to Sohra from Nongriat, helping the investigation further.'All the accused have admitted to the crime, and with all the evidence gathered, there is no room for denial,' the police officer said.A court in Shillong has remanded Sonam, her boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, and the three contract killers to eight-day police custody as investigations continue.Tune InMust Watch

Indore: Indore police are looking for the flat in which Sonam Raghuvanshi had stayed when she came to the city from Meghalaya where police was searching for her after she had reportedly gone missing. According to official sources, two Indore police personnel have been deployed in Dewas Naka area who are showing photographs of Sonam and Raj to the locals and conducting inquires in residential apartments to find out where exactly Sonam had stayed. Sources said that the duo had purchased groceries worth approximately Rs 5,000, suggesting they had plans for a longer stay there. According to Meghalaya police, Sonam was in Indore from May 25 to June 7 following the murder, before traveling to Ghazipur with Raj. Sonam made 30 calls to lover in week leading up to husband's killing
Lucknow: Investigations into the murder of Indore's Raja Raghuvanshi have revealed that his wife Sonam was in regular touch with her lover Raj Kushwaha on phone till her husband's murder on May 23. In all, Sonam made 30 calls between May 16 and 23 to Raj Kushwaha, some lasting barely 30 seconds while some of a minute's duration. The calls were made at odd hours and the two exchanged messages through WhatsApp and other app-based messaging facilities almost round the clock. Call detail records (CDRs) accessed by the investigators confirm a pattern of frequent, strategic communication. Police are currently analysing message backups, app data, and location histories to establish the full extent of the conspiracy and premeditation behind the murder plot. Sources said the digital trail confirms that Sonam began coordinating with Raj on May 15, the same day the two allegedly met at a café near her home in Nandbagh, Indore—just four days after her wedding to Raja. Investigators believe this sustained digital contact was not mere communication but a carefully planned conspiracy. Police allege that Sonam paid ₹50,000 to Raj Kushwaha to fund the travel of three men—Vishal, Akash, and Anand—tasked with following the newlywed couple to Shillong. The accused trio reportedly left Indore between May 17 and 18, travelling first to Delhi by train and then boarding the Rajdhani Express to Guwahati. Meanwhile, Sonam and Raja boarded a flight from Indore to Shillong on May 20. During this time, Sonam allegedly kept Kushwaha updated with live location sharing, enabling the accused to track the couple in real-time. Police suspect that this coordination ultimately led to the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi on or around May 23. Investigators are now examining message backups, app data, GPS logs, and deleted files to reconstruct the events leading to the crime and establish the extent of premeditation and criminal conspiracy. All five accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi honeymoon killing - wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, her lover Kushwaha and three alleged hitmen Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi - have admitted to their crime, said the police on Friday. The Meghalaya Police would take all five accused in the case to the crime spot at Sohra-Cherrapunji areas of the East Khasi Hills district next week for reconstruction of the crime, officials said. The newly-wed couple - Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi - from Madhya Pradesh's Indore went missing from a village near Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on May 23, two days after they landed in the northeastern state on their honeymoon. They were married on May 11. The man's body was retrieved from a 200-foot deep gorge on June 2. Wife Sonam, said police, surrendered at a police station in Uttar Pradesh in the early hours of Monday. "The murder was planned right before Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam's wedding. Raj Kushwaha is the mastermind behind this and Sonam is his partner in crime. The three killers were Raj's friends, and one among them is his cousin," Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, Syiem Vivek, who is overseeing the investigation, told NDTV. "Since February this year, the planning was going on about how to make Sonam disappear. Two ideas were under consideration to make her disappear: first, Sonam should be shown jumping into the river; second, someone should be murdered and the body should be burnt presented as Sonam's. But the accused could not implement these plans. The plan to murder Raja was made 11 days before his marriage," said the officer. Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, was in love with Raj Kushwaha, 21, and had warned her family of "consequences" if she was pressured to marry Raja Raghuvanshi, police sources said. As per the preliminary autopsy report, Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, was hit twice, once each on the back and front of his head. "This is not a contract killing, however, an investigation regarding the same is underway. Raj had paid the three hitmen Rs 50,000 each," said the police officer. Raja Raghuvanshi was told by his wife Sonam that she would let him consummate the marriage only after making an offering at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, investigators had said on Wednesday. "When Sonam and Raja reached Guwahati to visit Kamakhya after marriage, the killers had already reached Guwahati on 19 May. Their initial plan was to kill Raja in Guwahati itself. But Sonam had planned to go to Shillong and Sohra. Therefore, this plan was shelved," said the officer. "After that, they reached Nongriat. Thereafter, all of them attacked Raja and killed him and hid his body. They left soon after," said the officer. After this, the officer said, Sonam wore a burqa offered by one of the hitmen and reached Guwahati in a taxi. "Then from Guwahati she took a bus and went to Siliguri, from Siliguri she went to Patna, from Patna she took a bus to Ara, from Ara she took a train to Lucknow, from Lucknow she took a bus to Indore," said the officer, detailing her movements after the murder. "After the three hitmen were arrested, Sonam was told by Raj to leave Indore and tell her family that she was kidnapped," said the officer. The day Raja's body was found, on June 2, Sonam was in Indore, said the officer. Sonam was in Indore from June 25 to 8, the officer said. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya police is probing the sensational murder.
