Promising Texas A&M infielder confirms return to College Station for sophomore season

USA Today22-06-2025
Texas A&M baseball head coach Michael Earley retained another promising infielder for next year's club, as the No. 3 shortstop in Texas from the 2024 class is reportedly returning for his sophomore season in College Station.
According to TexAgs analyst Ryan Brauninger, Fort Worth native Sawyer Farr confirmed he will gear up for the Aggies in 2026. He made 31 starts in 39 appearances with 15 hits, including a triple, 17 walks and four RBI. The announcement from Farr will provide Earley with another up-and-comer who has the potential to become a superstar for the Aggies baseball program.
Perfect Game USA ranked the 6-foot-4-inch shortstop as the No. 17 prospect at his position and the No. 67 overall player in the country from his class. Although the opportunity was there for Farr to go pro and potentially sign with a Major League Baseball franchise, he signed with the Aggies.
Heading into the 2025 campaign, the freshman joined fellow teammate and outfielder Terrence Kiel II as the two Aggies to make Perfect Game USA's Top 75 Freshman list. According to the outlet's evaluation of Farr during Texas A&M's fall ball in 2024, he showed promise from both sides of the plate entering his first season in Aggieland.
"Armed with real switch hit juice, true freshman Sawyer Farr, hit some balls extremely hard in looks and got some good starts at second base, though the frame and athlete may move him to the left side of the dirt long term."
Both Farr and Kiel are now officially returning for their sophomore seasons in the Maroon and White uniform, which provides Earley's club with speed on the basepath and consistent hitting at the plate if they reach their full potential. Farr's announcement on Saturday night continues to grow the flame that the Aggies are trying to build back as preparations begin for offseason work in College Station.

No. 19 Texas A&M's QB Marcel Reed determined to prove he's more than just a runner

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed is well aware that many see him as much more valuable as a runner than as a passer. He spent the offseason working to change that. 'I know y'all have also heard it just like I've heard it: I'm not a passer,' he said. 'But I feel like I've had tremendous growth in my passing this offseason. We've had some great receivers come in … I think I just feel a lot more confident back there. Finding ways to protect myself, knowing the offense a little bit better and just being confident as a quarterback.' Reed started last season as Conner Weigman's backup before earning the job in October. He threw for 1,864 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions and ran for 543 yards and another seven scores as the Aggies went 8-4. Weigman transferred to Houston this offseason and Reed went to work on improving to help No. 19 Texas A&M take another step this year in the second season under coach Mike Elko. Reed attended the Manning Passing Academy this summer, learning from Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and his brother and NFL veteran Eli Manning. 'You learn a lot of different things about ways to be a quarterback, just how you approach the game,' Reed said. 'Peyton talked a lot about how he studied.' Reed believes his offseason work will pay dividends this season. 'I feel like there's another gear, another level I can take it to this year,' Reed said. In camp, Elko has already seen improvement in his quarterback. 'There's times where we're getting through progressions better than we did with him at any point last year,' Elko said. 'So those were the steps that we felt like he needed to take. Because a lot of times what you see as a bad throw, we see as the eyes not moving fast enough for the body or the eyes not in rhythm together and so poor mechanics because of that which sometimes leads to bad throws.' Protecting Reed Returning to protect Reed this season are veteran guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams and left tackle Trey Zuhn III. Reed-Adams was named a first-team AP All-America Monday. He spent four seasons at Kansas before transferring to A&M last season and starting every game at right guard. Zuhn earned SEC third team honors last season and leads the team with 37 starts entering his fourth year as a starter. Their work last season helped the Aggies finish as one of three teams in the Southeastern Conference to have 2,500 yards both passing and rushing. Owens returns Running back Rueben Owens returns after missing all but two games last season because of a foot injury. He sustained the injury in training camp and played in the regular season finale and Texas A&M's bowl game despite not being 100%. Elko believes Owens can be a boost to their running game after he ran for 385 yards and three touchdowns in limited work as a freshman in 2023. 'He understands how much he loves this game and he loves getting to do it, and his urgency to do is it at a really, really high level,' Elko said. 'Every rep has probably stepped up, one, because (he's) a year older, but probably because that's what happens sometimes when it gets taken away from you like it did. Defensive standouts The Aggies have a couple of veteran players returning to lead the defense in defensive back Will Lee III and linebacker Taurean York. Lee earned SEC second team honors last season after ranking fifth in the conference with 10 passes broken up and 42 tackles. He also had two interceptions, including one that he returned 93 yards for a touchdown against Texas. York, who was named to the second team on the preseason All-America team, led the Aggies with 82 tackles last season and ranked second with 9 ½ tackles for losses. The schedule The Aggies open the season Aug. 30 with a visit from UTSA. A big early test comes Sept. 13 with a visit to No. 6 Notre Dame, which won 23-13 at Kyle Field to open last season. The Aggies open SEC play Sept. 27 against Auburn, the first of three consecutive home games. There's a tough stretch later in the season with a trip to No. 9 LSU on Oct. 25 and a visit from 13th-ranked South Carolina Nov. 15. The Aggies visit top-ranked archrival Texas on Nov. 28.

Turner, Harper power Phillies to 12-7 rout of Mariners

PHILADELPHIA -- Trea Turner had four hits, including his first home run at home this season, Bryce Harper homered twice and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 12-7 on Monday night. Turner hit a three-run homer off Seattle starter Logan Gilbert (3-5) as part of a six-run second inning. Turner also had two singles and a double for his fifth straight multihit game. He finished with five RBIs. Harper hit homers in back-to-back innings. His solo shot in the sixth marked the 11th time he's had 20 home runs in a season. An inning later, his two-run homer off the second deck made it his 30th multihomer game. J.T. Realmuto had three hits, including a home run, and the Phillies also got RBI hits from Kyle Schwarber, Max Kepler and Bryson Stott. All told, the Phillies got 21 hits. Ranger Suárez (9-6) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts to earn the win. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Mitch Garver and Cole Young provided most of the offense for Seattle. They each homered while Garver added an RBI single. Young finished with four RBIs. Gilbert lasted just two innings and gave up six runs and nine hits. The Mariners have lost three straight and five of six. One home run away from tying the major league record for home runs in a season by a catcher, Seattle's Cal Raleigh went 0-for-5, striking out three times. After the Mariners had a four-run seventh to get within three, the Phillies answered with four runs, capped by Harper's second home run. Turner's homer was the 1,500th hit of his career. Mariners RHP Bryce Miller (2-5, 5.73 ERA) starts Tuesday against Phillies LHP Cristopher Sanchez (11-4, 2.45).

Watch: Notre Dame's new starting quarterback CJ Carr's high school highlight reel

While we haven't seen much of Notre Dame football's new starting quarterback CJ Carr at this level, we can go back and look at what he did in high school. Coming out of Saline High School in Michigan, Carr was a nationally ranked prospect as the No. 68 overall recruit in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite. Sure, we saw him during the past two years of Blue and Gold games, but those are set up for success for the quarterbacks. During his final season of high school, Carr would throw for 2,754 yards with 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, while running for 91 yards, but accounting for 9 other scores. Over his three years starting, he threw for a total of 8,135 yards with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, while accounting for 312 yards rushing and 16 scores. Those are very impressive numbers from Carr, and hopefully he can replicate that success with the Irish. Check out below his senior year highlights, for a glimpse of what is to come when Notre Dame takes the field on the road against Miami at the end of the month.
