By: GL Oh Text Size: The overall winners in the recent Sasa Novice Swimming Competition. Kota Kinabalu: A record number of 206 participants took part in the 6th Sabah Aquatic Sports Association (Sasa) Novice Swimming Competition held at the Penampang Sports Complex swimming pool recently. They came from five of Sasa's affiliated clubs, namely Blue Marlin Swimming Club (BMSC), Penampang Preppies Swimming Club (PPSC), PJMS Aquatic Swimming Club (PJMS), Sea Dragon Swimming Club (SD) and SSA Swimming Club Sandakan (SSA). A total of 58 events were competed over one-day across four age group categories - group 6 (7 and under), group 5 (8 - 9 years), group 4 (10 - 11 years) and group 3 (12 - 13 years). The group 6 boys' overall title went to went to Braxton Khoo Zi Rui of SD with four golds, while Lee Siao Chern of SSA took the girls' title also with four golds. In group 5, the boys' title was won by Nixon Yap Guo Yao of SD with four golds and the girls' title went to his teammate Verica Yap Su Thung with four golds. Chris Hansen Chong Sern Han of PJMS was the group 4 boys' winner with two golds and SD's Esmeralda Ava Lee took the girls' title with three golds and one silver. In group 3, the boys' winner was Tee Tougher from SSA with four golds, while SSA's Vivienne Lee Zi Yu captured the girls' title with four golds and two silvers. Sasa president Daniel Lee, who was delighted with the increase in the number of participants, congratulated all the overall champions and medal winners. He praised the effort and dedication of the parents and coaches, and hoped the swimmers and their coaches will continue to work on their foundation. He also expressed his gratitude to the Youth and Sports Ministry, Sabah Sports Council and Sabah Sports Council for their support as well as to all the technical officials and volunteers for their hard work to ensure the success of the event. MALAYSIA Athletics (MA) are targeting to surpass the five-gold medal tally achieved in the previous edition at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand this December. MA president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the association already have a specific target, which will be announced by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh ahead of the biennial Games. 'The minister will speak on behalf of all Malaysian sports, including MA... we've already discussed the target during our meetings. 'Of course, on our part we want to do better than in 2023 — if we win less, that would be unacceptable,' he told a press conference at Wisma OCM here today. For the record, the national athletics squad brought home five gold, three silver and 11 bronze medals at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia. The five gold medals were contributed by Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin in the men's discus throw, Andre Anura Anuar (men's triple jump), Umar Osman (men's 400 metres), Grace Wong (women's hammer throw), and Shereen Samson Vallabouy in the women's 400m. Meanwhile, Shahidan also announced the list of athletes currently qualified under Category A, including sprint ace Muhammad Azeem Fahmi, Umar Osman, Andre Anura, Muhammad Irfan, Jonah Chang Rigan (shot put), and Wan Muhammad Fazri Wan Zahari (800m) for the men's team. He said the four female athletes are Shereen, Grace, Queenie Ting Kung Ni (discus throw), and Nani Shahirah Maryata (shot put), while both the men's and women's 4x100m relay teams are being considered as potential Category A qualifiers. 'Category A means the athlete is among the top three in the ASEAN region. Athletes in Category A will be fully funded by the National Sports Council (NSC),' he said, adding that 20 athletes currently fall under Category B. The 2025 SEA Games are scheduled to be held from December 9 to 20. In addition, Shahidan stated that the NSC have agreed to appoint six new athletics coaches, namely Andrew Lulham, Jorge Luis Alfaro Quinones, Yunaika Crawford Rojer, Muhammad Hakimi Ismail, Mohd Robani Hassan and Lo Choon Sieng.

Kota Kinabalu: Tabs Bandaraya Safa will be represented by their best teams in this year's Borneo Cup football tournament scheduled to be held here in September. Its chairman Sulaiman Mohd Noor said he has given the coaches until the end of the month to select the best players they could find for each category. Advertisement 'To be able to produce good performance and result in the competition, we need to select players who have top quality and form the teams that are able to compete with the opponents. 'It is important to remember that this tournament also involves many good teams from abroad. Therefore, we need to be represented by our very best players,' he said after a meeting with his committee to discuss on their preparation recently. Kota Marudu District Football Association (Safa) Acting President Jimson Majemal expressed disappointment over the matter, saying the project was supposed to have been completed after the contractor was granted an extension until May 31. Advertisement 'As a sports advocate in this district, I have taken the time to monitor the progress of the project. The people here, especially sports enthusiasts, have long awaited good news as a symbolic gift for the Kaamatan celebration, but many are disappointed that the project is still not completed,' he said in a statement on Wednesday.
