PM Anwar arrives in Brazil for Brics summit debut, set to champion Asean's priorities

The aircraft carrying Anwar and his delegation landed at the Galeão Air Force Base (BAGL) at 5.41am local time (4.41pm Malaysian time) after a 12-hour flight from Paris where the premier completed his two-day official visit.
Advertisement Anwar was received by Acting Head of Mission of the Malaysian embassy in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat; Secretary of Trade Promotion, Science, Technology, Innovation and Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Laudemar Gonçalves de Aguiar Neto, and other Brazilian officials. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, is here at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He is being accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Minister of Transport Anthony Loke; Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Choon Man; and Paya Besar Member of Parliament Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah. Malaysia's participation in the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit is in its capacity as Brics Partner Country and Chair of Asean 2025. The Summit will mark the first gathering of Heads of State and Government from Brics Member and Partner Countries. Malaysia officially attained Brics Partner Country status on January 1, 2025. Hours after arriving in the coastal city, Anwar is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Brics Business Forum, alongside the Brazilian president. On Monday, the Prime Minister will deliver National Statements on 'Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic–Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence' and 'Environment, COP30 and Global Health' sessions. The intervention reflects Malaysia's steadfast commitment to strengthening multilateralism and amplifying the voice and interests of developing countries. In its capacity as Chair of Asean 2025, Malaysia will seek to promote stronger engagement between Asean and Brics, with the aim of advancing regional cooperation, deepening economic partnerships, and contributing to collective efforts toward a more equitable and sustainable global economy. During his three-day stay here, Anwar is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Brics Member and Partner Countries. He is also expected to engage with Brazilian and Malaysian companies. The Brics group — which serves as a political and diplomatic coordination forum for countries of the Global South and collaboration across diverse sectors — was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India and China. It later expanded with the inclusion of South Africa in 2011, followed by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2023, and Indonesia in 2024. KOTA BARU: The presence of dozens of illegal crossings along the Kelantan-Thailand border has raised serious national security concerns, said Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan. He emphasised that Kelantan's border is an integral part of Malaysia's international boundary with Thailand and must be protected with utmost vigilance. "The border spans approximately 105km, with most of it covering Sungai Golok, which separates Kelantan from Thailand's Narathiwat province. In light of this, the state government stressed the need to strengthen border enforcement through increased personnel deployment, enhanced security assets and coordinated efforts among all relevant agencies. He added that the state government is fully committed to working together to ensure the nation's borders remain secure. Bangladesh pledges full cooperation in militant probe involving its nationals
KUALA LUMPUR: Bangladesh has pledged full cooperation with Malaysian authorities in investigations involving 36 of its nationals arrested in recent security operations for alleged links to a radical militant movement. Its Foreign Affairs Ministry, in a statement, said the government is closely monitoring developments, with the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur maintaining close communication with the relevant Malaysian authorities. "Bangladesh once again reiterates its firm stand against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism and militancy, and remains ready to extend full cooperation to the Malaysian authorities in this regard. "The Bangladesh High Commission will provide the necessary support to Bangladeshi expatriates wherever needed," it said. The ministry said the High Commission had immediately engaged with the Malaysian authorities and formally requested the identities of the individuals and further details regarding the allegations made against them. "Of the arrested or detained individuals, formal charges have been filed against five in Malaysian courts. The rest are currently under further investigation or facing deportation," it added. On June 27, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said police had detained 36 Bangladeshi nationals who were found to be directly involved in a radical militant movement based on Islamic State (IS) extremist beliefs and violent ideology. He said the planned security operation, which began on April 24, was conducted in three phases across Selangor and Johor. "Of those detained, five have been charged under the Offences Relating to Terrorism (Chapter VIA) of the Penal Code in the Shah Alam and Johor Baru Sessions Courts. "Another 15 individuals have been issued deportation orders, while 16 remain under investigation for their involvement in the militant group," he said in a statement. Meanwhile, earlier today, Bukit Aman Special Branch director Datuk Ahmad Ramdzan Daud said the Bangladeshi Radical Militant Group (GMRB), which had been spreading extremist beliefs and ideology among Bangladeshi nationals in the country, has been successfully dismantled.

Comparing this to "crabs in a bucket", he said all members should instead work together to strengthen the party's internal security for the survival of the party ahead of the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16). "Don't be like crabs in a bucket... all the crabs want to get out, but step on the others so that they can climb up. "In the end, not a single one comes out, all die in the bucket. Why are we dying in a bucket because we trample on each other?" he asked at the closing of the Segamat Umno division delegates meeting at the Taman Yayasan Multipurpose Hall, here Saturday (July 5). Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, stressed that the culture of pointing fingers and assuming that only one is right will only break the people's confidence in Umno. "Any differences of opinion among members must be expressed in a civilized and ethical manner, especially when discussing internal party issues.
