NEW DELHI:
Jharkhand police
on Saturday neutralised two Naxalites of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), who had a bounty of Rs 10 and Rs 5 lakh, respectively.
Pappu Lohra, the chief of the JJMP, who had an award of Rs 10 lakh on his head and Prabhat Ganjhu, the zonal commander of the naxal group, who had a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head, were eliminated.
"It's a big day for all the security forces working in Jharkhand to eliminate naxalism. JJMP naxal group - along with its Supremo Pappu Lohra - were gathered in Latehar PS area for inducing violence... A police team was in a search operation in the forest area when the naxal group opened fire - the police retaliated, and the encounter went on for a long time. Police later searched the area, where 2 bodies were recovered and another naxal was injured," Amol Vinukant Homkar, IG Operations, Jharkhand Police, told news agency ANI.
The encounter is part of the government's effort to eliminate the red terror, as it comes days after a big breakthrough in the anti-Naxal operations that led to the elimination of topmost Maoist leader Nambala Keshav Rao, better known as Basavaraju, along with 26 battle-hardened communist guerrillas in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur.
The 70-year-old was the mastermind behind some of the deadliest Maoist attacks, including the 2010 killing of 75 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and the 2013 Jheeram Ghati massacre of 29, including several state Congress leaders.

The killing of Basavaraju, the general secretary (the topmost rank) of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), has not only rendered the organiation headless, but also taken away its chief military strategist who was known for his technical prowess, operational planning and violent disposition. With 'Basavaraju's elimination' 10 months ahead of the March 2026 deadline set by the government to eliminate red terror, the end could come much sooner, according to a source.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the security forces for their 'remarkable success', while Union home minister Amit Shah called it a 'landmark achievement' in the government's anti-Naxal campaign.
Basavaraju's killing is the result of a massive operation that was launched on May 19 in the dense forests of Abhujmad, located at the tri-junction of Narayanpur, Bijapur, and Dantewada districts of Chhattisgarh. A fierce gunfight ensued between the security forces and Maoist fighters, leading to the death of 27
Naxals

Salwa Judum case: Legislative workaround and limits of contempt power

The doctrine of separation of powers must always be acknowledged in a constitutional democracy, the Supreme Court said in its May 15 order ruling that any law made by Parliament or state legislatures cannot be held to be in contempt of court. The decision by a bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma came while dismissing a 2012 contempt petition filed by sociologist Nandini Sundar and others against the Chhattisgarh government for enacting the Auxiliary Armed Police Force Act, 2011, alleging the law violated an earlier SC order. The bench held that the law did not amount to contempt of the SC's 2011 landmark judgment that disbanded the state government-backed Salwa Judum, terming it unconstitutional. Salwa Judum was a government-backed militia formed in Chhattisgarh in 2005, which used armed tribal civilians to combat Maoist violence. The contempt plea claimed that the Chhattisgarh government failed to comply with the 2011 order to stop open backing of vigilante groups like the Salwa Judum, and instead went ahead and armed tribal youths in the fight against Maoists. It said there had been a clear contempt of the SC order when the state government passed the Chhattisgarh Auxiliary Armed Police Force Act, 2011, which legalised arming tribals in the form of Special Police Officers (SPOs) in the war against Maoists. The petitioners further submitted that instead of disarming SPOs, which was a key constituent of the SC's 2011 order, the Chhattisgarh government legalised the practice of arming them. They also argued that the victims of the Salwa Judum movement had not been adequately compensated. In the latest ruling of May 15, the Supreme Court said the Chhattisgarh Auxiliary Armed Police Force Act, 2011 does not constitute a contempt of court per se, and that the balance between sovereign functionaries must always be delicately maintained. 'Every State Legislature has plenary powers to pass an enactment and so long as the said enactment has not been declared to be ultra vires the Constitution or, in any way, null and void by a Constitutional Court, the said enactment would have the force of law," the bench said. If any party wants that the legislation be struck down for being unconstitutional, the legal remedies would have to be presented before an appropriate constitutional court, the bench noted.

Cop at Bopdev Ghat help centre extorts Rs 28,000 from youths

Pune: Kondhwa police on Saturday filed a complaint against a constable and his friend for assaulting a youth from Chennai and his friends, who came to Bopdev Ghat for photography, and extorting Rs 28,000 on the pretext of filing a case against them. The incident occurred between 7 am and 9 am on June 5. The constable posted at Bopdev Ghat help centre was later suspended. Senior inspector Vinayak Patankar said, "We have served notices to constable Vikram Wadtile and his friend Kedar Jadhav, directing them to join the police in the investigation because they were charged with offences punishable up to seven years." Patankar said the 19-year-old Chennai-based youth, who is the complainant in the case, visited Pune to meet his grandparents. On June 5, the youth and his two friends visited Bopdev Ghat to take photographs and took a hookah pot with them. After a recent gang-rape incident involving a 20-year-old event management student at Bopdev Ghat, a police help centre had been set up there. Wadtile was stationed at the help centre. According to Patankar, "Wadtile questioned the youth and his two friends and searched their bag, where he found the hookah pot. Wadtile then took them to the Kondhwa police station." The police officer said, "At the entrance of the police station, Wadtile stopped the vehicle and told the youths that they would be taken to Sassoon General Hospital for a medical examination and their future would be ruined." He initially demanded Rs 25,000 from each of them. When they said they didn't have that much money, they agreed to settle by transferring Rs 28,000 online to Kedar Jadhav's account. After receiving the money, Wadtile let them go. " The complainant grew suspicious and came to the police station to verify whether Wadtile was indeed a policeman. "He informed me about the incident. The youth did not know Wadtile's name but described his physical appearance. I conducted an inquiry, which revealed that Wadtile indeed threatened and extorted money from the youths. After the extortion case was registered, Wadtile and Jadhav returned Rs 28,000 to the youth," the officer said. Deputy commissioner of police (Zone V) Rajkumar Shinde suspended Wadtile pending departmental inquiry. He said that the cop had been held responsible for tarnishing the image of the police department due to his actions.

Gurdwara bodies of Haryana and Punjab clash over control of Miri Piri group of institutions

1 2 3 Chandigarh: Within days of establishing the elected body, tensions have emerged between the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee manned trust, which manages the Miri-Piri group of institutions, including the medical college at Kurukshetra. The war of words between the two Sikh bodies intensified after the executive body of the HSGMC, led by president Jagdish Singh Jhinda, former president Baljit Singh Daduwal, and other executive members, visited the medical college site in Shahabad Markanda. This was followed by a meeting with the Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini. During their visit to the medical college, Jhinda and Baljit Singh Daduwal asked the local management to hand over control to the HSGMC as the premises were established on the land of Gurdwara Mastgarh Sahib. "During their tenure, the SGPC created a private trust and raised the building of the said medical college on the land owned by Gurdwara Sahib. Now, with the implementation of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Act 2014, all the gurughars are under the control of the HSGMC. According to the act, the movable and immovable assets on gurughars and their land are now under the control of the HSGMC. Since the Badal family created a family trust to manage this institute, we have termed this as illegal and initiated the process to acquire the same in accordance with the provisions of the Act," said Baljit Singh Daduwal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Beyond Text Generation: An AI Tool That Helps You Write Better Grammarly Install Now Undo "The college has 100 medical seats, but no infrastructure. Once we manage the affairs, we shall put everything in place systematically. We have brought this to the notice of the CM as well as the govt and have sought their support," said Daduwal. When contacted, Sukhminder Singh, secretary of the trust managing the Miri Piri group of institutions, categorically dismissed the claims of the HSGMC. "Firstly, the issue related to this institution is under litigation and the court has imposed a stay. They can download the orders from the website and get those vetted by the govt as well as their legal team. Let them get the stay vacated and take directions from the court," said Sukhminder Singh.
