Apprentice Bailey Wheeler lands ride on 2024 Golden Slipper runner-up Coleman for Group 2 Victory Stakes

News.com.au02-05-2025
Talented apprentice Bailey Wheeler has declared that winning the Group 2 Victory Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday would undoubtedly be the 'highlight of my career'.
The 20-year-old has been handed a golden opportunity to put his name in lights on the first day of the Queensland winter carnival, earning the plum ride in the $300,000 race over 1200m on the Chris Waller -trained 2024 Golden Slipper runner-up Coleman.
On Friday morning, Coleman was the equal $5.50 favourite for the race alongside Tony Gollan's stable star Hidden Wealth in a wide-open contest.
The Kosciuszko champion Far Too Easy, with champion jockey Craig Williams aboard, was $6.50 while the Gollan-trained Freedom Rally had firmed from $26 to $16.
Asked what it would mean to win the Victory Stakes on Saturday in a quality field, Wheeler said: 'I think it would stand me in very good stead for the rest of the carnival and to ride my first Group winner for Mr Waller would be the highlight of my career for sure.
'Let's hope I steer him in the right direction because he'll be very hard to beat.'
When Wheeler received the text message from his manager revealing he would be riding Coleman, the first person he rang was his proud dad.
'I was very excited,' said Wheeler, who won the $200,000 Wagga Town Plate (1200m) on the Mack Griffith-trained gelding Compelling Truth on Thursday.
'As soon as I got the text message I actually rang my Dad and said 'how good's this?'
'It's a great opportunity to ride in a Group 2 race for Mr Waller and this horse, he's very smart.
'I've ridden in a Group 2 in Sydney but this is definitely the best Group opportunity I've had since I've been an apprentice.
'It gives me confidence that he (Waller) has confidence in me. It's very exciting and the horse's trials have been superb leading into Saturday.'
Coleman finished narrowly behind the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly Lady Of Camelot in a thrilling $5m Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill in March last year when the colt was trained by Matt Laurie.
His best results since that tremendous effort have been third in the Group 1 Sires Produce (1400m) at Randwick last April and second in the Group 2 Roman Consul (1200m) at Rosehill in October.

Coleman missed this year's autumn carnival in Sydney after having surgery to remove a fragment from his fetlock.
The Victory Stakes will be his first race under Australia's top trainer Waller following disgruntled owner Sharon Cummings' failed Supreme Court attempt to stop the colt from running in the Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield in November when he finished sixth out of seven horses as the $3 favourite while under the tutelage of Laurie.
Wheeler said he relished the pressure of features and would treat the Victory Stakes like any other race on multiple Group 1-placed colt Coleman, which has won $1.3m in prizemoney.
'There's a little bit of pressure but I enjoy that, it gives me something to look forward to,' he said.
'I treat it the same, it's just another race basically. It's definitely going to be a big experience.
'I enjoy the pressure, especially around such a live chance. Riding for Mr Waller in a big race, it gives me such great hope. I'm excited.'

Casino Monday preview: Trainer Ethan Ensby takes it to the Max

Casino trainer Ethan Ensby has declared electric sprinter Maximum Vortex is ready and able if called upon by slot-holders for a Kosciuszko mission in the mid-October $2 million showdown. A fourth generation direct descendant of former Woodlands Stud owned crack filly-cum-foundation mare Shaybisc, Maximum Vortex has won seven races on both sides of the Tweed River, most of them by big margins in slick time. Ensby 's gelding went within inches of winning the John Carlton at the Grafton carnival just 10-days prior to his uncommonly poor run in the time-honoured Ramornie Handicap. 'The Ramornie was just an absolute trainwreck,'' Ensby said. 'The trainer needs his head read for starting him from that bad gate (14 of 15). 'He pulled up fine but we tipped him out for three weeks, he is back and he looks enormous. 'He'll start a bit of pacework (this week) and the idea is he will trial, I think it is the day before tickets are drawn for the Kosciuszko. 'The stable has put together a bit of a syndicate to buy some tickets, we have got a fair bit of coin in the bank to go and buy some, so (the Kosciuszko) is the plan.' Maximum Vortex jumps out of the ground to win Race 5 at Doomben! @CejayGraham1 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) February 1, 2025 • Ensby will be represented by four of Maximum Vortex's stablemates – Vendemmia, So Sain, Intelligencer and the Tasmanian-born blueblood, In The Blink – at his hometown meeting at Casino on Monday. Vendemmia finished out of a place at his first run for Ensby (and jockey Ben Looker) at Kempsey last month but it comes as no surprise he is the punter's favourite to make amends on Monday. 'Benny jumped off and said he just made a mess of that,'' Ensby explained. 'He said he lobbed in what he thought was going to be a perfect position and then he said he had all these horses around him that weren't carting him anywhere. 'He got caught behind a wall of them and darted back to the inside and the inside probably ended up being the worse place to be all day, it was like quicksand.' Vendemmia will have company, and competition, in her assignment from her new stablemate So Sain who makes her Northern Rivers debut on Monday having originally been stationed at Kembla with Robert and Luke Price. 'She's a nice little horse,'' Ensby said. 'I probably should have had her in the 1000m (race), the 1200m might just be a furlong too far. Look for her second-up but that's not saying that she can't run a race.' Ensby warned punters not to unduly punish his Written Tycoon filly Intelligencer ($51) for her almost 20-lengths last at Grafton four weeks ago. 'Once again the trainer needs his head read for starting from an outside gate,'' Ensby said. 'Benny (Looker) came back and said he was never going to get in any closer than six-wide and then another horse in the race just carted him clean off the track. 'Be looking for big improvement on Monday. 'She is a very, very nice horse.' Intelligencer boasts a rare 3x4 double cross of Kenmare whose numerous Australian-born stakes-winners include fast and furious types like Keltrice, Kenvain and Kenfair, milers Brave Prince and Baryshnikov, AJC Oaks winner Kenbelle and the Melbourne Cup placegetter, Lahar. Ensby's final runner on Monday is another stable debutant, this one being the seven-year-old mare, In The Blink. 'She has been a work in progress,'' Ensby said. 'I tell you what, if looks could win races, she'd win by 10 lengths. She looks absolutely outstanding and her work has been exceptional.'

Dubbo duo eye winning trebles at Bathurst

A pair of hard-fit and progressive Dubbo gallopers are both out to make it three straight wins when they line up at Monday's Bathurst meeting. And they could lead home another big haul at the track for Dubbo stables, enjoying another terrific start to a new season. Slush Fund, a tough on-speed five-year-old in the Clint Lundholm stable, tackles a very winnable Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1406m fifth-up. The son of 2016 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist has never raced better, winning his last two in dominant fashion. Two starts ago at this track, he led all the way with something in hand to beat a BM 58 field with a little more depth than this by more than two lengths. Then a fortnight ago on Forbes Cup day, he sat behind the speed against similar opposition before again proving too strong over 1400m in heavy ground. With regular claiming jockey Zoe Hunt aboard, Slush Fund is set to win again, and then likely be aimed at a bigger race late next month on Dubbo Cup day. Then later on the program, fellow Dubbo raider Sweet As A Kiss is eyeing off a third consecutive win in a BM 66 Handicap over 2006m. A US-sired four-year-old mare in the Garry Lunn stable, Sweet As A Kiss has twice charged home from well off the speed, both at home and at Bathurst, to destroy her opposition up to this level.
