49ers S Malik Mustapha suffered torn ACL in regular-season finale

NBC Sports27-04-2025

The 49ers have an injury issue that previously wasn't known.
Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports safety Malik Mustapha underwent an ACL repair following the 2024 season. He suffered the injury in Week 18, against the Cardinals.
He took a cleat to the knee during the game. Initially, it was believed that he was fine. An MRI conducted later in the week revealed that the graft from a 2022 ACL repair had torn.
Via Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group, the 49ers confirmed the Mustapha injury and surgery on Saturday night.
The injury means that rookie fifth-rounder Marques Sigle could be playing right away. Mustapha isn't expected to be ready to go until the middle of the season.
Mustapha was a fourth-round pick of the 49ers in 2024. He appeared in 16 games with 12 starts as a rookie.
The 49ers added safeties Richie Grant and Jason Pinnock in free agency. They lost Talanoa Hufanga to the Broncos after his rookie contract expired.
Ji'Ayir Brown and George Odum also are on the roster.

Royals place Michael Massey on injured list, recall Tyler Tolbert before series-opener vs Yankees

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals placed second baseman Michael Massey on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left ankle and recalled utility man Tyler Tolbert from Triple-A Omaha before starting a three-game series against the Yankees on Tuesday night. Massey had served as the designated hitter on Saturday against the White Sox but did not finish the game, and he was out of the lineup for the series finale. He is hitting just .202 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 56 games this season. 'The same ankle injury that he's been dealing with since the last homestand. It's just not getting any better, or it's not improving enough to go out there and play at a high level,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'He got an MRI to show that things weren't healing as well as we would like. So, we needed to make a move to get him some rest.' ___

Try it free KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Yankees can no longer count on Jake Cousins helping out their bullpen in the short term, and perhaps the long term, too. The reliever was on his way back from a right elbow flexor strain, two games into a rehab assignment, but he has now been pulled off of it after feeling 'some stuff' in his elbow, manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium. Advertisement Cousins was undergoing an MRI exam and meeting with team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad on Tuesday to determine what was wrong, but it was a worrying development for the right-hander. 'To feel something with the elbow is concerning, but then again, we got to see what we have,' Boone said. Jake Cousins throws a pitch during the sixth inning in Game 3 of the 2024 World Series. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Advertisement After emerging as a high-leverage weapon late last season — before and after missing the final week-plus of the regular season with a pec strain — Cousins arrived at spring training in the midst of a shutdown because of the forearm strain. His comeback hit a snag in May when he dealt with a pec issue after a live batting practice session, but he bounced back to start a rehab assignment on June 3. Cousins pitched in two rehab games, most recently on Saturday with High-A Hudson Valley, when he threw 25 pitches across two innings while striking out three. Jason Szenes / New York Post Advertisement The Yankees' bullpen is already dealing with one big hit as Luke Weaver is on the IL with a hamstring strain that could keep him out a few more weeks. Fernando Cruz recently returned from the IL for a shoulder strain, while Jonathan Loáisiga is still trying to settle into a groove after coming back from 2024 elbow surgery last month.

Nick Sirianni: We have to be even better at tush push now

The Eagles will still be able to run the tush push this year, but head coach Nick Sirianni said on Tuesday that they will have to raise the level of their execution. A Packers proposal to ban the play failed to get enough votes from team owners to pass and Sirianni was asked about his reaction to the vote as well as the fact that the Cardinals and Colts — both teams are coached by former Eagles coordinators — voted in favor of the ban. Sirianni declined to say anything about how the vote played out, but pivoted to say that all the attention paid to the play means the Eagles will have to put more work in to make sure it remains a winning call for them. 'Excited about being able to continue to grow that play,' Sirianni said, via a transcript from the team. 'We have a lot of work to do to continue that success. It just doesn't happen. The same work that we needed to put into it last year, we'll even have to be better because we know teams are going to focus on it to try to stop it and we'll even have to be better at how we coach it and how we perform it and how we execute. So that's really try not to focus too much on things that I can't control and only focus on the things that you can. That's our process right now to think about the ways that we're going to get to get better at running that play and the compliments that come off of it.' Teams trying to knock off the Super Bowl champs will be working to come up with effective counters to the play as well and it will be interesting to see what tweaks both sides make once action gets underway in the fall.
