Microsoft to showcase Notre-Dame Cathedral in digital replica
The 862-year-old Gothic masterpiece was reopened last December after a five-year restoration after a devastating fire in 2019.
A digital replica will serve as a record of the building's architectural details, Microsoft said. It will also provide a virtual experience for visitors and those unable to visit.
The cathedral became a symbol of Paris and France after Victor Hugo used it as a setting for his 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dam e. Quasimodo, the main character, has been portrayed in Hollywood movies, an animated Disney adaptation and in musicals.
Last year Microsoft worked with Iconem, a French company that specialises in digitalisation of heritage sites, on a digital replica of St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
'One of the things we learnt from the work at St Peter's is how a digital twin can help support the ongoing maintenance of a building. Because you capture a digital record of every centimetre and what is there and what it's supposed to look like,' Smith told Reuters.
'The ability to create a digital twin right now I think will provide an enormously valuable digital record that I believe people are going to be using 100 years from now,' he said.
Since 2019 Microsoft has digitally preserved heritage sites and events, including:

Starlink rival Eutelsat beats estimates on Ukraine boost, government demand
French satellite operator Eutelsat reported better than expected annual earnings on Tuesday, driven by growing interest in its satellite internet services from government and corporate customers. Eutelsat gained the spotlight this year as European governments sought home-grown solutions for satellite services, aiming to reduce their reliance on US providers such as Elon Musk's Starlink. Revenues from video, connectivity and government services reached €1.23bn (R25.59bn) in the year ended June 30, up 0.8% from a year earlier. Financial analysts had expected the revenues to total €1.21bn (R25.18bn), according to a consensus poll provided by Eutelsat. The Paris-based group hopes to offset declining income from its video business by gaining a foothold in the satellite internet market, where Starlink dominates. However, CEO Jean-François Fallacher told reporters the company 'won't compete head-to-head with Starlink or Amazon's Kuiper in consumer markets', focusing instead on segments that make it competitive.

Europe's old power plants to get digital makeover driven by AI boom
Utilities can lease the land or build and operate the centres themselves, securing long-term power contracts with tech firms, he said. The deals offer much more than just the sale of unused land as they include opportunities for stable, high-margin revenue, said Simon Stanton, head of global partnerships and transactions at RWE. 'It's more about the long-term relationship, the business relationship you get over time that enables you to de-risk and underwrite your infrastructure investments,' Stanton said. Most of the EU and Britain's 153 hard coal and lignite plants are set to close by 2038 to meet climate targets, joining the 190 plants closed since 2005, based on data from NGO Beyond Fossil Fuels, which campaigns to accelerate closure of coal-fired power stations. The economics of data centre deals can be compelling for the utilities, which can negotiate a long-term power supply contract to underwrite future renewable developments. Tech firms are paying premiums of up to €20 (R416) per MWh for low-carbon power, said Gregory LeBourg, environmental programme director at French data centre operator OVH. Data centre power demands can be anywhere from a few hundred MW to a GW or more. So the annual 'green premium' — the extra price paid for low-carbon electricity — on top of a base market price could potentially translate into a long-term contract worth hundreds of millions or even billions of euros, based on Reuters' calculations.
