Kota Kinabalu: The Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Youth Council has expressed concern over a recent incident in Bukit Puchong where a Kadazan individual from Sabah was allegedly denied a rental unit on the grounds that it was 'only for locals.' Its Chairman Steve Johnny Mositun said the remark by a real estate staff member appeared to question the person's nationality based on ethnic identity, accent or name, reflecting a lack of understanding about Malaysia's multicultural society.
Advertisement 'This kind of statement not only hurts feelings but also causes unease among Malaysians from Sabah and Sarawak, who are often misunderstood or sidelined,' he said in a statement on Friday. He emphasised that Kadazans and other ethnic groups from Sabah are Malaysian citizens with equal rights and should not be treated otherwise. Steve urged the agency and staff involved to take full responsibility and undergo cultural sensitivity and national awareness training, especially those working directly with the public. He said the KDCA Youth Council remains committed to strengthening cultural understanding and promoting unity through dialogue and inter-regional cooperation. 'This incident should be a lesson and a reminder that Malaysia belongs to all of us. Every citizen deserves to be treated with dignity and respect,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Russia's night attack on Kyiv leaves eight injured, including child, Ukraine says

KYIV (Reuters) -A Russian overnight air attack on Kyiv wounded eight residents of an apartment building, including a three-year-old child, authorities in the Ukrainian capital said on Monday. Four of those injured in the attack, which took place soon after midnight on Monday, have been hospitalised, with one person in serious condition, the head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on the Telegram messaging app. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that all of the people were residents of a multi-storey apartment building in the city's Darnytskyi district on the left bank of the Dnipro River. "The blast wave damaged windows from the 6th to the 11th floor," Klitschko said in a post on Telegram. The capital and most of Ukraine were under air raid alerts for several hours overnight following Ukrainian Air Force warnings of Russian missile and drone attacks. With the threat of missile strikes on western parts of Ukraine that border Poland - a NATO member - Polish armed forces scrambled aircraft to ensure the safety of Polish airspace. The central Ukrainian city of Kropyvnytskyi came under an attack, regional Governor Andriy Raikovych said, adding that emergency services were working on the site and information about potential damage will be released later on Monday. The full scale of the Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. Reuters' witnesses heard loud blasts shaking the city of Kyiv overnight in what sounded like air defence units in operation. There was no comment from Russia on the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes in the war that Russia started in February 2022. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian. (Writing by Lidia Kelly in Melbourne; Editing by Kim Coghill and Saad Sayeed)

Don't let foreigners misuse business licences, warns Nga

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must not allow their citizenship to be misused by foreigners to obtain business licences, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. He said from January 2023 to July this year, 3,703 enforcement operations were carried out against business premises involving foreign workers. "Malaysian citizens must uphold the Rukun Negara and safeguard the nation's identity from being exploited," he said in reply to Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga said 14,834 compounds were issued, 23 licences terminated, and 2,880 premises seized due to licence violations. He explained that government policies were for the benefit of Malaysians and not foreigners, while clarifying that the ministry had never issued such licences to foreigners. "The local authorities and the government have never allowed foreigners to apply and obtain licences for hawker stalls, small businesses, business premises, retail shops, restaurants, car workshops and markets," he said. He added that foreigners were also not allowed to work at premises owned by the local authorities, as citizens were meant to earn an income through the local authorities' premises. "The local authorities will not compromise with any violation of the terms of the licence issued. Strict action such as seizures, compounds, shutting down of premises and termination of licences will be taken," he said.

This includes the illegal transfer of licences and permits to foreign nationals, he said in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 28). "A consolidated approach together with the Immigration Department and police is very welcome,' he said during Question Time. He also said local councils have never permitted foreign nationals to apply for or own trading licences, involving small trader licences, business premises, sundry shops, restaurants, workshops and markets. ALSO READ: Integrated ops plan to nab foreigners running illegal businesses This was per existing by-laws, he added. Mohd Hasnizan Harun (PN-Hulu Selangor) had asked about the ministry's efforts in tackling the issue of foreign nationals running businesses, especially sundry shops. He also asked about steps taken against businesses registered under Malaysians but fully run by foreign nationals. Nga urged MPs with evidence of foreign nationals running businesses to provide him with the details.
