Congress government to rectify injustice meted to Telangana in Krishna water share: Minister Uttam Kumar
SURYAPET: Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Wednesday said the Congress government was determined to secure Telangana's rightful share of Krishna river waters, correcting what he called a 'historic betrayal' by the previous BRS regime.
Addressing the media in Chintalapalem mandal, Uttam accused the BRS of surrendering Telangana's rights by accepting a mere 299 tmcft out of the total 811 tmcft water allocation from the Krishna river, leaving 512 tmcft to Andhra Pradesh. 'It wasn't a negotiation; it was a sellout, and in writing,' he said.
He said the Congress government has reversed this approach and reopened the case before the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal, demanding a 70:30 share for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, respectively, based on catchment area, cultivable land, drought conditions and population. 'Our goal is to green the drought-hit districts of Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda and Khammam through targeted irrigation,' he said.
'KLIS, a monument of waste'
Slamming the BRS's record, Uttam called the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project a 'historic blunder' that cost the state `1 lakh crore while leaving farmers high and dry.
'If the BRS had stuck to the original Pranahita-Chevella project planned by the Congress at Rs 38,000 crore, Telangana could have completed 10 major irrigation projects. Instead, Rs 62,000 crore was sunk into a single failed project with three collapsed barrages,' he said.
He accused the previous BRS government of scrapping the efficient and cost-effective blueprint prepared under former chief minister Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy and opting for an inflated project at Medigadda for political optics. 'This wasn't irrigation, it was inflation,' he said, alleging massive corruption and calling Kaleshwaram a 'non-functional project with irreversible financial loss'.
Uttam said the Rs 62,000 crore wasted on KLIP could have completed long-pending Krishna basin projects such as Palamuru-Rangareddy, Kalwakurthy, Nettempadu, Bhima, Koilsagar, Dindi, Devadula, Sitarama Sagar and the SLBC tunnel.
'Instead of building a robust irrigation network, BRS built a monument of waste. We could have solved the irrigation crisis permanently,' he said.

Bandi Sanjay inaugurates road Works worth Rs 31.12 crore in Karimnagar
Karimnagar, June 7 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar asserted that the Narendra Modi-led Central Government is giving top priority to road construction and infrastructure development across the country. He said that the Karimnagar Parliament constituency is witnessing significant internal road development under the National Employment Guarantee Scheme, with works worth Rs 31.12 crore currently underway. The Union Minister inaugurated a newly constructed internal road in Qazipur village of Kothapalli mandal on Saturday. The road, completed under the Employment Guarantee Scheme, was built for Rs14 lakh. He later laid the foundation stone for a market shed in Asif Nagar, Kothapalli Mandal, which is being taken up with Rs 9.50 lakh from the MP Local Area Development (MPLADS) funds. Speaking at the event, Bandi Sanjay said, 'This year alone, Rs 74 lakh has been allocated for road construction in Kothapalli Mandal. I am pleased to inaugurate this road in Ghazipur, which is part of a broader initiative to enhance rural connectivity under the employment scheme.' Highlighting the Centre's extensive efforts in road infrastructure, he informed that under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), Rs 291 crore has been spent in the Karimnagar Parliamentary segment, resulting in the construction of 1,341 km of roads. Additionally, hundreds of crores have been utilized under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to build roads in remote villages. He noted that nearly Rs 5,000 crore has been spent on National Highway works in Karimnagar Parliament. 'Highway projects between Karimnagar-Warangal and Siddipet-Elkathurthi are progressing rapidly. We are also set to begin construction of the Karimnagar-Jagityala highway very soon,' he added. Referring to the Rajiv Gandhi Highway, he said the Central Government is ready to widen it using National Highway funds. However, he pointed out that the road is currently under a state-level maintenance contract. 'If the state government resolves the issue with the existing contractor and submits proposals, we are prepared to take up the widening project without delay,' he assured. UNI VV BD

Will PM update his Canadian counterpart on India being third-largest economy: Congress takes dig at PM Modi
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (June 7, 2025), describing him as 'Swayam Udghoshit Vishwaguru', and asked whether during his meetings at the G7 Summit, he would update his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, on India being the third-largest economy. Mr. Carney had, while justifying his invite to India for the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, later this year, said some countries should be at the table for the discussions at the summit. 'On May 24th, 2025, while addressing the media following the NITI Aayog meeting chaired by the PM, the CEO of the NITI Aayog had dramatically announced that while he was speaking, India had crossed Japan to become the world's third-largest economy. Now the Canadian PM — a distinguished professional economist who has been the Governor of the Central Bank of Bank of Canada as well as of the Bank of England — says that India is the fifth largest economy in the world,' Mr. Ramesh said in a post on X. 'Perhaps, India's first SUV — Swayam Udghoshit Vishwaguru — can update his Canadian counterpart when the two meet in a few days,' Mr. Ramesh said. After inviting PM Modi to the G7 Summit, Mr. Carney said India is the fifth-largest economy and, effectively, the most populous country in the world and central to a number of supply chains and hence, it makes sense to invite the country to the summit. PM Modi received the invite for the G7 Summit on Friday (June 6, 2025) and has agreed to participate in it. He has attended the previous five G7 meetings too. India is not a member of the G7, which comprises the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.
