Black Mirror: first trailer for new season offers more tech nightmares
The trailer continues Black Mirror's trademark uneasy, foreboding tone, previewing several new entries in a universe of tech gone awry. New stars include Peter Capaldi, Issa Rae, Paul Giamatti, Rashida Jones, Tracee Ellis Ross, Emma Corrin, Awkwafina, Chris O'Dowd and more.
And breaking from precedent, the anthology series will revisit at least a few previous stories in the new chapter, as the trailer shows Cristin Milioti and other characters from then standout season 4 episode USS Callister continue their virtual voyage. Milioti will reprise her role as Nanette Cole, a computer programmer unwittingly roped into a video game by her sinister boss Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons).
Though the original episode ended with the demise of Plemons's character, several others survived, including Billy Magnussen's Karl, Milanka Brooks' Elena and Osy Ikhile's Nate, all of whom will appear in the new season. Jimmi Simpson, who played a character seemingly sacrificed during the original episode, is also set to return.
Other returning cast include Will Poulter and Industry's Asim Chaudhry, who will return for their second Black Mirror stints each, in new storylines, after starring in the 2018 interactive special Bandersnatch.
'We're doing some things we've not done before,' Brooker said of the new episodes last year. 'People can expect quite a lot of emotion and, hopefully, a good mix of chills. We did a couple of horror stories in season six, which we label as Red Mirror. But this time around, the episodes are all, in a way, like OG Black Mirror. I wrote one script, and the general consensus was that it was one of the bleakest, heaviest gut punches yet. There's also tech-y episodes and ones that are making people cry. So, hopefully, it's a full emotional workout, but we shall see. The viewers will be the judge.'
Black Mirror first premiered in 2011 on Channel 4 in the UK, and was purchased by Netflix ahead of its third season in 2016. The show became an international hit, receiving critical acclaim as well as inspiring a slew of lesser sci-fi copycats. In its first 5 seasons, it nabbed 14 Emmy nominations and eight wins, including outstanding TV movie for San Junipero in 2017, USS Callister in 2018 and Bandersnatch in 2019.
After season 5 premiered in 2019, Black Mirror went on extended hiatus, returning in June 2023 to warm reviews. The sixth season featured star turns by Salma Hayek, Aaron Paul, Myha'la , Paapa Essiedu and others.
Series creator Brooker returned as executive producer for the new season, alongside Jessica Rhoade and Annabel Jones.

Hollyoaks actor urges 'murdered' mum's friends not to go to stepdad's funeral
An actor whose mother was victim of a murder-suicide has urged her friends not to attend the suspected killer's funeral. Dawn Kerr was found dead alongside her husband Andrew Searle's body in the Aveyron region of France on February 6. The prosecutor in charge of the case previously described the case as a murder-suicide, in which Searle is alleged to have killed his wife before taking his own life. There was no evidence that anyone else was involved in the deaths. Prosecutor Fabrice Belargent previously said that 'the analysis carried out does not so far show any evidence that a third party was involved'. More than six months later Searle's body has been released by the French authorities and his funeral has been planned. But Dawn's two children, Hollyoaks actor Callum Kerr along with his sister Amanda, have issued a statement asking friends of their mum not to attend his funeral. They said that while the investigation into the deaths was ongoing, they 'cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand'. In the statement shared on social media, the siblings said: 'In the absence of any evidence suggesting third-party involvement in the tragic death of our mother, Dawn Kerr, the prevailing hypothesis remains that of a murder-suicide. 'Our mother was killed by multiple blows to the head, and Andrew was found deceased by hanging. 'His injuries are consistent with self-hanging, and no defensive wounds were found on his body. 'While the official investigation is ongoing, we cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand. 'For this reason, we must respectfully but firmly request that our mother not be included in any way in the funeral arrangements being made for Andrew. 'Please do not share photographs of them together. Please do not attend Andrew's service if you were a friend of our mother. 'It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death. 'We ask for understanding, privacy and respect as we continue to grieve and seek justice for our mum.' More Trending Dawn's body was found in the garden of the couple's home in Les Pesquiès, about an hour north of Toulouse, with severe wounds to her head. Searle's body was found inside the house. Police were called after a neighbour went to check on the couple when they didn't turn up to a planned dog walk. The couple, who were both aged in their 60s, previously lived in Musselburgh, near Edinburgh, and married in France in 2023 with son Callum walking Dawn down the aisle. They had lived in the Aveyron region for five years. Callum played PC George Kiss in Hollyoaks, and has also appeared in Netflix's Virgin River. He lives in the US where he also has a country music career. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Thursday Murder Club's Helen Mirren 'offended' crew by going off script with one word
The Thursday Murder Club stars a whole host of unforgettable actors from this side of the world, including the likes of Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan. The Thursday Murder Club director shared how Hollywood icon Helen Mirren was able to offend its filming crew with just one word. Richard Osman 's The Thursday Murder Club has made its cinematic debut on Friday, August 22, bringing to life his eagerly anticipated best-selling 2020 novel. A plethora of stars quickly signed up for the film with Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie leading its impressive cast. But during The Thursday Murder Club: An Evening with Richard Osman at The British Library, American director Chris Columbus shared an issue that was experienced on set. He elaborated: "There were a few Netflix executives who said, 'This is too British, we don't know what they are talking about'.' 'One of the things we got by the sensors was Pierce one day ad-libbed a word. 'He called someone a 'Plonker'. I yelled 'cut' and I said 'what is a plonker?' and he explained it to me and I thought 'That is fantastic, that has to stay in the film'. 'I'd heard the phrase 'w*****' before but there were a couple of people on the crew when Helen said it. It was not scripted. 'She said 'most of the police are w******' and people were offended on set. "How could Elizabeth say that word? And I thought, that means it's staying in the film. I embraced that, I really did." Osman's The Thursday Murder Club is the first in a series of books, followed by The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed and The Last Devil To Die. His fifth book, The Impossible Fortune, is also on the way, with its publishing date set for Monday, September 22. As of yet, there has been no official confirmation that the franchise will return for a sequel film based on Osman's work. However, Columbus has previously teased that there are already plans in the works for its return, telling Film Stories: 'If we're lucky enough, and all signs seem to point in that direction that we will be shooting a sequel or the next chapter – in the second movie.' The Thursday Murder Club premieres on Friday, August 22, in cinemas and on Thursday, August 28, on Netflix.
