BMC to curb garbage dumping at Bicholim rivulet
Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) has decided to take steps to curb garbage dumping along the Bicholim rivulet (Aark) near the KTC bus stand towards Sanquelim.
Locals informed BMC that unidentified people are dumping garbage, blocking the water flow from the Aark rivulet.
The Aark rivulet is connected to the Bicholim river for proper discharge of water during the monsoon. Any blockage in this rivulet causes flooding during heavy rain. Flooding stopped after PWD fixed the issue at the main flooding point, but garbage dumping near the KTC bus stand has again raised concerns, said resident Subhash Usapkar.
BMC chairperson Vijayakumar Natekar said the council will install CCTV cameras or take other remedial measures to curb garbage dumping. Despite repeated cleanups by BMC, people still litter the area, he said.

L udhiana: The district has recorded 23% more rainfall than usual this monsoon season, even as the current month shows a modest deficit that weather officials classify as normal. Tthe meteorological department has observed that rainfall in Ludhiana between June 1 and Aug 17 reached 396.4 mm, compared with the seasonal norm of 321.4 mm. That puts the district among eight in Punjab with above-average rainfall this year. Tarn Taran saw the sharpest excess at 79%, while Kapurthala reported the steepest seasonal shortfall at 70%. For Aug, Ludhiana received 84.4 mm of rain in the first 17 days, about 12% less than the norm of 96.5 mm. A Chandigarh-based weather official said such a variation falls within the "normal" range, defined as rainfall 19% above or below average. Elsewhere in Punjab, Pathankot recorded 108% excess rainfall this month, while Bathinda saw a deficit of 96%. Despite the uneven distribution, residents say this year's monsoon has brought timely relief. "It rains often after hot and humid spells," said Gurpreet Singh, a Ludhiana resident. "The weather feels much better than in previous years." MSID:: 123347474 413 | Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Rain, returning flock choke GST road
Chennai: Rain and returning weekend travellers brought traffic to a grinding halt on GST Road and adjoining highways on Sunday evening, with vehicles crawling bumper to bumper from Chengalpet to Tambaram. With the long Independence Day weekend drawing to a close, thousands who travelled to their hometowns converged on the city at the same time. Traffic snarls were reported at several bottlenecks, including Perungalathur, Vandalur, Kattankulathur, and Singaperumal Koil, where rainwater logging slowed down vehicle movement further. Vehicles lined up for over a kilometre at Paranur toll plaza in Chengalpet, with all lanes choked. "I started from Maduranthakam early, but I ended up spending more than four hours in traffic. It was a nightmare," said Ananthakrishnan, a private firm employee, who got stuck near the Perungalathur bridge. "Traffic diversions for heavy vehicles have been put in place at SP Koil (main diversion), Guduvanchery, ORR and Zero Point for all Chennai-bound vehicles," said Samai Singh Meena, deputy commissioner of police, traffic, Tambaram You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai | Gold Rates Today in Chennai | Silver Rates Today in Chennai Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
