AAP's anti-drug campaign is a series of missed deadlines: Cong

Ludhiana: Senior Congress leaders slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann for failing to eliminate the drug menace in Punjab.
Addressing a press conference here, Congress leaders said that CM Mann had changed the deadline for making Punjab drug-free at least four times, but failed.

Former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi accused AAP of distributing alcohol, drugs, and money to win the Ludhiana West bypoll.
Senior Congress leaders, including MLA from Kapurthala, Rana Gurjeet Singh, former minister Pargat Singh, Sunder Sham Arora, and former CM Charanjit Singh Channi, were in the city to attend the induction of an AAP leader in the Congress.
Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh said, "In the year 2022, when AAP formed government in Punjab, both CM Bhagwant Mann and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal assured that they would make Punjab drug-free.
Then, on August 15, 2023, during the Independence Day function, CM Mann announced that he would make Punjab drug-free within one year. In April 2024, he again stated that Punjab would be drug-free by the end of December, 2024.
"
He added, that in October, 2023, the government took children to the Golden Temple to pray for a drug-free state. On February 28, CM Mann directed Punjab Police to eliminate the drug menace in three months.
He also promised to open de-addiction centres in villages and form committees.
"He must reveal what his government has done on the ground, apart from making false promises and giving 'tareekh pe tareekh' on the aim of making Punjab a drug-free state," Rana Gurjeet said.
Accusing CM Mann and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal of using campaigns for publicity, former CM Channi said, "While the 'Yudh Nasheya Virudh' programme was on, at least 27 individuals lost their lives to spurious liquor.

In another incident, three Ludhiana residents also died after consuming spurious liquor. Why don't CM Mann and the finance minister take responsibility for these deaths? While being in the opposition, Mann would always hold the CM responsible for each tragedy.
Now, he must take responsibility for deaths of the people."
Channi alleged that the ruling government was distributing drugs, liquor and money in Ludhiana West.
"In fact, AAP's own MLA from Amritsar, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, has been saying that senior police officials are involved in running a drug nexus in Punjab. Why does Mann not listen to their own MLA? Even the demolition drive is an eyewash because the houses that are being demolished are illegally constructed; however, the authorities call it an action against drug peddlers," he said.
The former CM asserted that drugs were being openly sold in Punjab and asked anyone who wanted to check to visit him.
"I will show how drugs can be delivered just with a call," he maintained.
Congress's Allegations:
Missed Deadlines: CM Bhagwant Mann allegedly shifted the deadline for making Punjab drug-free multiple times—initially in 2022, then August 2023, April 2024, and again in February 2025.
Lack of action: Congress leaders claim that despite promises, there has been little tangible progress, and the government has relied on symbolic gestures like prayers at the Golden Temple.
Deaths from spurious liquor: At least 30 deaths were cited during the anti-drug campaign, raising questions about the effectiveness and sincerity of the efforts.
Internal criticism: Even AAP's own MLA, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, has reportedly spoken out about police involvement in drug networks.
Election malpractice allegations: Former CM Channi accused AAP of distributing drugs, liquor, and money during the Ludhiana West bypoll.

Rahul Gandhi cites life threat over ‘vote theft' slogan in Pune court defamation case

MUMBAI: Congress Lok Sabha MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday told a Pune court that he was unable to attend proceedings due to threats to his life, citing his exposure of vote theft and his slogan, 'Vote chor sarkar'. A criminal defamation case has been filed against the Congress leader in Pune's special court for his remarks against Veer Savarkar. The case was lodged by Satyaki Savarkar over Gandhi's speech in London in March 2023, in which he claimed that Savarkar had said an assault on a Muslim man was 'found or pleasurable'. Satyaki Savarkar challenged this statement, asserting that Savarkar had not written any such thing, and called Gandhi's speech false, misleading, and defamatory. He has sought Gandhi's conviction under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code and compensation under Section 357 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Gandhi's lawyer, Milind Pawar, highlighted in court that the Congress leader's safety was under threat, especially after his allegations of electoral malpractice. In his application, it was also stated that given the documented history of violent and anti-constitutional tendencies linked to the complainant's lineage, there was 'a clear, reasonable appreciation that Rahul Gandhi may face harm, wrongful implication, or other forms of targeting, so history should not repeat itself.' Gandhi also sought preventive protection from the state.

BJP leader Surendran slams LDF, UDF on voter list allegations

Thrissur: Senior BJP leader and former Kerala state president K. Surendran on Wednesday ridiculed both the CPI(M)-led LDF and Congress-led UDF over their allegations of large-scale voter list manipulation in Thrissur, where Union Minister Suresh Gopi is the MP. Speaking to reporters in Thrissur, Surendran questioned how the state's two dominant political fronts remained silent if, as alleged, a party without even a single MLA in Kerala managed to add 60,000 "illegal" votes. "If you couldn't detect such a thing, you should hang yourselves," said Surendran. Surendran asserted that Suresh Gopi would not only win again in 2029 but also in 2034, with an even larger mandate, dismissing the current controversy as an attempt to dent the minister's popularity. "These allegations will only increase public support for him," he claimed. Explaining the BJP's position, Surendran pointed out that the Election Commission now allows three revisions of the voter list annually, compared to one earlier, and that any citizen residing in a constituency for over six months is eligible to register. "Suresh Gopi and his family had rented a house in Thrissur as part of his political work and duly transferred their votes there," added Surendran. He acknowledged that a small number of votes had been shifted from other districts but insisted the figures were negligible. "MLAs and MPs from both the Congress and CPI(M) have votes registered in multiple places. Why is this a problem only when it's Suresh Gopi?" he asked. The BJP leader also criticised the opposition for raising objections based on the claims of "a single woman" rather than following proper legal channels. He cited his own 2016 Assembly election loss by 89 votes, where he later proved 80 fake votes in court without creating a media uproar. "Whether the opposition likes it or not, Suresh Gopi will be here for the long run," Surendran declared, likening the BJP to a "majestic elephant" that would remain unshaken by "small jackals making noise".

Maharashtra government not interested in regulating people's food choices: Fadnavis

The Maharashtra government was not interested in regulating people's food choices, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday and described as 'unnecessary' the raging controversy over closure of abattoirs and meat shops in some cities on Independence Day. He feigned ignorance about the existence of a 37-year-old government resolution (GR) allowing closure of abattoirs on certain days, including Independence Day, and noted municipal corporations take such decisions on their own. Some civic bodies in Maharashtra have ordered the closure of slaughterhouses and shops selling meat on August 15, triggering a controversy. 'The state government is not interested in (knowing) who eats what. We have many other issues to address,' Fadnavis told reporters here. 'Some people even went ahead and called vegetarian people as impotent. This nonsense should stop at once,' he said. Asked about some municipal corporations ordering closure of abattoir on August 15, the CM, 'The state never took such a decision. A government resolution (GR) was issued in August 1988. Municipal corporations take such decisions (ordering closure of slaughterhouses) on their own. Even I was not aware of such a GR existing for such a long period.' 'I also learned about it (GR) through the media. Similar decisions were taken when (Shiv Sena UBT leader) Uddhav Thackeray was chief minister of Maharashtra (November 2019-June 22),' he opined. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Tuesday expressed displeasure over some civic bodies ordering the closure of slaughterhouses and shops selling meat on August 15, saying it was wrong to impose such a ban. Such types of restrictions are generally imposed considering faith-related sensitivities on occasions like Ashadhi Ekadashi, Mahashivratri, Mahavir Jayanti, Pawar said. 'It is wrong to impose such a ban. In major cities, people of different castes and religions reside. If it is an emotional issue, then people accept it (ban) for a day. But if you clamp such orders on Maharashtra Day, Independence Day and Republic Day, then it is difficult,' Pawar told reporters. Civic bodies of Kalyan Dombivali in Thane district near Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur have issued orders directing the closure of meat shops on August 15. There are reports that the Malegaon Municipal Corporation in Nashik district, too, has issued such an order.
