Russell Brand's derelict pub has 'ripped the heart out' of local community

Metro30-04-2025

Russell Brand has 'ripped the heart out of the community' by letting his Oxfordshire village pub fall into disrepair, neighbours say.
Brand bought the Crown Inn in Pishill in December 2021 for £850,000 but has not opened it to the public.
Instead buildings on the site have been used by the comedian, actor and campaigner to record broadcasts for his army of online followers and host.
He had applied to planners to transform it into a media hub and base for his Rumble podcast. Brand, 49, withdrew the plans after a backlash from locals and pressure from the council.
South Oxfordshire Council described the plans as 'unsuitable' with the loss of the pub as a public amenity while the studios could cause nuisance to neighbours.
Locals say the grade II listed pub has been left 'in limbo' as it falls into disrepair. The pub garden is overgrown and there are issues with the upstairs ceilings, they say.
Brand carried out a lot of building work on the site but the project has juddered to a halt amid planning issues.
Caroline Dempsey told Metro: 'It's sad. The closure of the pub has ripped the heart out of the local community. It was the place we met and made contact it kept us together. Now it is just sitting there falling into disrepair. It's such a shame.
'The pub was a destination for walkers. It was a place farmers could meet.
'Now we are in limbo. When Brand came here first he said he would not re open it as a pub but things would be 'cool'. Well, they are not and we want answers. Maybe he could sell it and it could be used as a mixed use space with the pub open.
'At the moment it's all blocked. We are not happy and we need a change. It's getting untidy it needs attention. It was a destination people would head to we don't want it to be an eyestore.'
She said other than a woman who comes in on a daily basis to check the pub property it is just being left unoccupied.
Mrs Dempsey added: 'When Brand was broadcasting a few years ago from a building in the garden I could hear him, it was disruptive. I wouldn't call him an ideal neighbour.'
It is understood that a local couple showed an interest in buying the Crown from Brand to reopen as pub.
However after a meeting with the comedian who is now a self styled guru with millions of followers, a deal was ruled out for now.
A local told Metro: 'Brand was very charming when he arrived giving us gifts like hampers.
'However the relationship has soured. There is no transparency as to what is going on with the pub. A multi media space is no good to any of us. We just wish he would sling his hook and let someone get on with running it as a pub again. It's becoming an eyesore. Local people were interested in taking it over but after one meeting it was clear it would be difficult.'
Brand has relocated to Miami leaving locals to stew on the sight of the unkempt property at the heart of their village. More Trending
A former farmer told Metro: 'The community is dying. The pub was the glue that kept the community together. That's all gone. We don't want the council to give in to celebrity and money. It should be about more than that.'
A woman who was in the pub on Tuesday checking on the premises said when approached by Metro: 'Russell Brand is a very nice man. I've met him he is a good man.'
Brand is set to return to the UK to face five sex offence charges involving four women between 1999 and 2005, including rape and sexual assault. He denies all allegations.
Metro has contacted representatives for Russell Brand for comment.

I'm a TV critic – here's 7 shows I'm bingeing in June

Does anyone else feel it's very quiet for TV at the moment? As Metro's TV Editor and an avid binge-watcher in my spare time, I've been poring over Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and the other streaming platforms, desperately trying to find something new that'll grab my attention. In the absence of a show like Celebrity Big Brother consuming the daily rhetoric for several weeks in a row, I've been waiting patiently… and now, some of the biggest releases of the year are finally coming this month. So, June, what do you have in store for us? There are seven shows in particular that are on my to-watch list, including the final season of Squid Game and a sizzling period drama that seems to be flying under the radar. There's also a brand new thriller coming soon that I hope will have me on the edge of my seat, and the latest season of the TV show that single-handedly made me up my omelette-making game. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. It's looking like an exciting month for TV – let's see if you'd agree with my go-to binge-watches in the coming weeks this June. First up is a new golf comedy series that's giving Ted Lasso merged with Happy Gilmore, a combination that has me grinning from ear to ear. And to top it all off, Owen Wilson leads the cast, alongside acting legends Judy Greer and Marc Maron. What more could you want? In an age where the news can often send me into a spiral of despair, I need a bit of levity and hopefulness on TV, and I'm hoping Stick will provide that solace. Stick premieres on Wednesday June 4 on Apple TV Plus. Even though we Bridgerton fans were fed this year with a little taste of what's to come in season four, I'm still very much feeling the period drama void in my life. Especially after My Lady Jane's unceremonious axe from Amazon Prime Video last year. Enter: the highly-anticipated second season of The Buccaneers, a show that champions female empowerment within both romance and friendship. The trailer for season two sent shivers down my spine with an orchestral version of Chappell Roan's Good Luck Babe playing in the background, and the promise of even more love, lust, sisterhood, queer celebration and the addition of Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester in the cast. Say no more. The Buccaneers season 2 premieres Wednesday June 18 on Apple TV Plus. Squid Game is actually coming to an end this month, and I'm still not quite sure how we're all going to process our emotions by the time we watch the finale. The second season ended on a massive cliffhanger, following a bloodbath battle between the players and the soldiers after Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) embarked on his dangerous mission to bring the lethal game down from the inside. How will the story draw to a close? With plenty of gore, that's for sure. But more importantly, reminding the audience once again about the way that class struggles dictate the world we live in. Squid Game season 3 launches on Friday June 27 on Netflix. Apple TV Plus has been on a winning streak in the past few years, with critically-acclaimed releases including the likes of The Morning Show, Severance, Foundation, Slow Horses, Pachinko, Silo and many more. Smoke, starring acting chameleon Taron Egerton, is joining the roster this month, following an arson investigator and a detective who team up to try to apprehend two serial arsonists. But, in the trailer that's garnered 4.5 million views in five days, it's revealed that even Taron's lead character is under suspicion… or could at least have a secret hidden up his sleeve. Created by the writer behind Black Bird (Dennis Lehane), I'm already hooked. Smoke premieres on Friday June 27 on Apple TV Plus. As a bookworm, I often love to have read the book that a film or TV show is based on before watching it. In the case of We Were Liars, I'm glad I haven't. Coming to Amazon Prime Video soon, the show is described as a psychological thriller, in which an accident occurs one summer among a group of friends that changes the course of their lives. I'm being wary of how much I Google for fear of spoilers. One comment on YouTube underneath the teaser even says: 'The twist at the end is insane, anybody who's never read the book or didn't read the plot on Wikipedia, you're in for a treat.' I'm ready to have my mind blown. We Were Liars premieres on Wednesday June 18 on Amazon Prime Video. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A little while ago, I was lucky enough to go to a Disney Plus event, where they served us the famous omelette from The Bear, complete with Boursin down the middle and crisps sprinkled on top. It was, quite frankly, the best omelette I've ever eaten in my life. Fortunately, that's not the only good thing about The Bear. It's a phenomenal show, one teeming with chaos that's promising to grow even more in season four. Amid the feelings of anxiety and stress that watching The Bear can induce, it's a drama that at its core is full of heart, passion, and a sense of community that never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Even if I couldn't handle the heat of Carmy's kitchen, I'll be tuning in. The Bear season 4 launches on Thursday June 26 on Disney Plus. It's been three years since Dominique Thorne made her debut as Riri Williams in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, blasting onto the scene in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a teenage genius with brains to rival Tony Stark. More Trending She's finally returning in her very own eponymous series, Ironheart, and I can't wait to see what the young superhero does when given the opportunity to spread her wings. The era of the Young Avengers, which could see Riri join forces with Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop, Joe Locke's Wiccan, and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan, to name a few. No one can dull my excitement about what the MCU could bring in the near future. View More » Ironheart premieres on Wednesday June 25 on Disney Plus. Got a story? Netflix viewers have days to binge 'phenomenal' drama before new episodes drop

Got any nice plans for the week? Maybe a big work project you need to finish or a hot date? Well, cancel them now because there's a new Netflix show coming and you've only got days to prepare. Yes, I know that sounds dramatic, but this isn't any old Netflix show. This is Ginny and Georgia season 3 we're talking about. If somehow, though, you've never heard of the comedy-drama, which is unlikely considering it's one of the streaming giant's most-watched shows, allow us to explain what it's about. The series follows a daughter and mother, Ginny and Georgia, as they try and settle down after years on the run. Sadly, though, Georgia's past has an unfortunate habit of catching up with her, threatening the stability of their new home. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. This all culminated in a dramatic season 2 cliffhanger, which we won't spoil here, but needless it involves a wedding, the police, and a murder. It's basically a slightly pulpier version of Little Fires Everywhere or Big Little Lies in that it's about women dealing with some pretty dark secrets. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Perhaps unexpectedly, considering it's basically a TV soap of sorts, the show has divided critics with the general consensus being it's good, not great. As such, it's only scored a rather middling 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, with its most excoriating critic being Alison Stine from Salon. 'Ginny & Georgia operates in its own universe, one where the rules of physics don't seem to apply,' Stine's review reads. 'Events happen fast and dramatically. Consequences, rarely at all. And in its second season, the show has a major tone problem.' But it does have its defenders, including Kristen Maldonado from Pop Culture Planet, who labelled the show 'fun' and 'enjoyable'. It's also worth noting that the show has a far more respectable audience score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the series has been a huge hit for Netflix. 52 million subscribers watched the first season inthe first 28 days after its release, while globally, people spent 381 million hours binge-watching the mother and daughter's misadventures. More Trending This wasn't a one-off hit either; globally, viewers spent 504.77 million hours watching the second series, which (at the time) made it one of Netflix's biggest shows ever. Since then, fans have spent years waiting to see what's next for Ginny and Georgia, so we're expecting a similar tidal wave of viewers, and you don't want to miss out on the fun, do you? So book that day off, cancel those plans, and settle in for some fun. Ginny and Georgia season three will be available to watch on Netflix from June 5, 2025. Got a story? 'Geriatric' band Patchwork joke Glastonbury too soon after village fete

South London band Patchwork are not playing on Glastonbury Festival's Pyramid Stage this year, keyboardist Marc Harris has clarified to Metro, during what was an alarming morning for the funk collective. As Glastonbury confirmed the stage times of their 2025 lineup this morning, the Worthy Farm festival also chucked in a curveball: a mysterious band called Patchwork, billed to perform on the famed Pyramid Stage at 6.15pm on Saturday, June 28. Patchwork is organiser Emily Eavis' fake band name which will end up being a famous act, just as in 2023 mystery band The Churnups resulted in a surprise set from huge rock band The Foo Fighters. Alas, Glastonbury isn't on the cards this year for the Putney-based musicians; even if they are Google's first answer to 'Patchwork band' – something ticketholders are frantically searching this morning. 'It's always been a dream, of course, after a decade of shambling pub gigs in southwest London, often with more band members than audience… but we knew our day would come…' Patchwork's Marc joked to Metro. 'The band is always ready to play, just hoping we will have recovered from the village fete in St Mary Bourne the week before. 'Clearly geriatric bands are all the rage now and with a combined age of over 500 we certainly qualify, but we could have done with a bit more notice.' Marc, 60, who has been playing with the band for 10 years alongside founding boutique travel agency Africa Odyssey and making his own symphonies, requested Metro add that the real Patchwork will be performing at The Half Moon in Putney on Wednesday evening (tickets here, for those who missed out on Glastonbury this year). While the Half Moon is no Pyramid Stage, the band will be rocking out to covers of funk and soul classics for a spirited crowd. Not one to miss. Keys basher Marc forms Patchwork alongside vocalist Gemma Dorsett, drummer Patch Zahara, trumpeter Nick Steele, guitarist Dom Liversedge, vocalist Rory Barnett, bass player Rob Oatley, and sax players Charlie Somers, Ed Butterworth and Roger Chetwode. While Marc and co. will not be heading to the Pyramid Stage this year, it's rumoured the band behind the Patchwork clue could well be US sisters HAIM. Robbie Williams has also been cropping up in fan speculation as he is currently on tour and mysteriously posted a picture of himself at Worthy Farm in the 90s. More Trending Other names like Green Day, Sam Fender, The Cure, and the long begged for Pulp have all been mentioned as possible surprise acts. Alongside the mysterious Patchwork band, the Pyramid Stage also teases a huge 'TBA' on Friday at 5pm. The confirmed Glastonbury headliners this year are The 1975 on the Friday, Neil Young on the Saturday, and Olivia Rodrigo on the Sunday, with Sir Rod Stewart taking the legends slot. Charli XCX will also be performing on The Other Stage, with Raye in the sunset Pyramid Stage slot on Saturday. Glastonbury will take place at Worthy Farm from Wednesday June 25 to Monday June 30. Tickets are now sold out, but the BBC will be covering the action live and on iPlayer. Got a story?
