I'm a TV critic – here's 7 shows I'm bingeing in June

Metro2 days ago

Does anyone else feel it's very quiet for TV at the moment?
As Metro's TV Editor and an avid binge-watcher in my spare time, I've been poring over Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and the other streaming platforms, desperately trying to find something new that'll grab my attention.
In the absence of a show like Celebrity Big Brother consuming the daily rhetoric for several weeks in a row, I've been waiting patiently… and now, some of the biggest releases of the year are finally coming this month.
So, June, what do you have in store for us? There are seven shows in particular that are on my to-watch list, including the final season of Squid Game and a sizzling period drama that seems to be flying under the radar.
There's also a brand new thriller coming soon that I hope will have me on the edge of my seat, and the latest season of the TV show that single-handedly made me up my omelette-making game.
Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter.
Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you.
It's looking like an exciting month for TV – let's see if you'd agree with my go-to binge-watches in the coming weeks this June.
First up is a new golf comedy series that's giving Ted Lasso merged with Happy Gilmore, a combination that has me grinning from ear to ear.
And to top it all off, Owen Wilson leads the cast, alongside acting legends Judy Greer and Marc Maron. What more could you want?
In an age where the news can often send me into a spiral of despair, I need a bit of levity and hopefulness on TV, and I'm hoping Stick will provide that solace.
Stick premieres on Wednesday June 4 on Apple TV Plus.
Even though we Bridgerton fans were fed this year with a little taste of what's to come in season four, I'm still very much feeling the period drama void in my life. Especially after My Lady Jane's unceremonious axe from Amazon Prime Video last year.
Enter: the highly-anticipated second season of The Buccaneers, a show that champions female empowerment within both romance and friendship.
The trailer for season two sent shivers down my spine with an orchestral version of Chappell Roan's Good Luck Babe playing in the background, and the promise of even more love, lust, sisterhood, queer celebration and the addition of Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester in the cast. Say no more.
The Buccaneers season 2 premieres Wednesday June 18 on Apple TV Plus.

The time has finally arrived. Squid Game is actually coming to an end this month, and I'm still not quite sure how we're all going to process our emotions by the time we watch the finale.
The second season ended on a massive cliffhanger, following a bloodbath battle between the players and the soldiers after Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) embarked on his dangerous mission to bring the lethal game down from the inside.
How will the story draw to a close? With plenty of gore, that's for sure. But more importantly, reminding the audience once again about the way that class struggles dictate the world we live in.
Squid Game season 3 launches on Friday June 27 on Netflix.
Apple TV Plus has been on a winning streak in the past few years, with critically-acclaimed releases including the likes of The Morning Show, Severance, Foundation, Slow Horses, Pachinko, Silo and many more.
Smoke, starring acting chameleon Taron Egerton, is joining the roster this month, following an arson investigator and a detective who team up to try to apprehend two serial arsonists.
But, in the trailer that's garnered 4.5 million views in five days, it's revealed that even Taron's lead character is under suspicion… or could at least have a secret hidden up his sleeve. Created by the writer behind Black Bird (Dennis Lehane), I'm already hooked.
Smoke premieres on Friday June 27 on Apple TV Plus.
As a bookworm, I often love to have read the book that a film or TV show is based on before watching it. In the case of We Were Liars, I'm glad I haven't.
Coming to Amazon Prime Video soon, the show is described as a psychological thriller, in which an accident occurs one summer among a group of friends that changes the course of their lives.
I'm being wary of how much I Google for fear of spoilers. One comment on YouTube underneath the teaser even says: 'The twist at the end is insane, anybody who's never read the book or didn't read the plot on Wikipedia, you're in for a treat.' I'm ready to have my mind blown.
We Were Liars premieres on Wednesday June 18 on Amazon Prime Video.

A little while ago, I was lucky enough to go to a Disney Plus event, where they served us the famous omelette from The Bear, complete with Boursin down the middle and crisps sprinkled on top. It was, quite frankly, the best omelette I've ever eaten in my life.
Fortunately, that's not the only good thing about The Bear. It's a phenomenal show, one teeming with chaos that's promising to grow even more in season four.
Amid the feelings of anxiety and stress that watching The Bear can induce, it's a drama that at its core is full of heart, passion, and a sense of community that never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Even if I couldn't handle the heat of Carmy's kitchen, I'll be tuning in.
The Bear season 4 launches on Thursday June 26 on Disney Plus.
It's been three years since Dominique Thorne made her debut as Riri Williams in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, blasting onto the scene in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a teenage genius with brains to rival Tony Stark. More Trending
She's finally returning in her very own eponymous series, Ironheart, and I can't wait to see what the young superhero does when given the opportunity to spread her wings.
The era of the Young Avengers, which could see Riri join forces with Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop, Joe Locke's Wiccan, and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan, to name a few. No one can dull my excitement about what the MCU could bring in the near future.

Ironheart premieres on Wednesday June 25 on Disney Plus.

Shaquille O'Neal's £370m fortune, six kids receiving nothing, world record Walmart spend

Shaquille O'Neal's £370m fortune, six kids receiving nothing, world record Walmart spend Shaquille O'Neal is the subject of a new Netflix docuseries and the NBA legend has enjoyed huge business success away from the basketball court, but he has not always been careful with money Shaquille O'Neal has enjoyed successful basketball and business careers (Image: Jamie Schwaberow/NBAE via Getty Images ) Shaquille O'Neal has built a sizable fortune since beginning his NBA career over three decades ago. The 53-year-old basketball icon was formidable on the court, and the center became a four-time NBA champion. He was named season MVP in 2000, a three-time NBA finals MVP and a 15-time All-Star. O'Neal enjoyed a Hall of Fame career and arguably found equal success away from the basketball court. ‌ The TNT analyst has numerous business ventures and was named Reebok's president of basketball in 2023. His work alongside NBA legend Allen Iverson to help improve the brand's reputation within the sport is the subject of a new Netflix docuseries, Power Moves with Shaquille O'Neal, which is released today. ‌ Netflix star The show details how Reebok, once synonymous with basketball in the early 2000s, had tasked O'Neal and Iverson with restoring the brand's standing within the sport. The latter was named Reebok's vice-president of basketball. It shows their search for Reebok's marquee name from the next generation, seemingly landing on WNBA rising star Angel Reese, who has previously described O'Neal as a 'father figure'. 'Shaq' was credited with making a significant difference at Reebok, before the Netflix show's release. "There's a powerful shift happening at Reebok right now, and Power Moves lets the world experience it with us," Reebok CEO Todd Krinsky said."This isn't just a comeback, it's a cultural movement, fueled by purpose, passion, and the kind of leadership that inspires real change. Jersey Legends saw that spark and knew this was the moment to capture. Article continues below "What Shaq, Allen, and our team are building is electric, and this series brings viewers inside the heart of it, as it happens." Shaquille O'Neal and Allen Iverson work together at Reebok (Image: Jesse D. Garrabrant/NBAE via Getty Images ) £370m fortune O'Neal was the NBA's highest-paid player for three seasons during his 19-year pro career. His salary reached as high as £20.3m ($27.6m) at the Miami Heat, with his career earnings totalling £215m ($292m). ‌ That figure does not include his various sponsorship and endorsement deals with the likes of Papa Johns and Pepsi. It is estimated that O'Neal has a net worth of £370m ($450m) through his NBA salaries, media work, endorsement deals, and business ventures. 'Shaq', an early investor in Google, has spoken about his preference for investing in established franchises. He purchased 155 Five Guys restaurants, owns 40 gyms and 150 car washes. Shaquille O'Neal won four NBA championships (Image: Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images ) ‌ No inheritance Despite his vast wealth, O'Neal doesn't plan to pass on his millions to his six children. At least, not without his family showing some initiative of their own. 'My kids are older now. They're kinda upset with me,' O'Neal said on the Earn Your Leisure podcast. 'Not really upset, but they don't understand. I tell them all the time. We ain't rich. I'm rich.' Explained his reasoning, he said: 'You gotta have bachelor's or master's [degrees], and then if you want me to invest in one of your companies, you're going to have to present it, boom boom boom, bring it to me. I'll let you know, I'm not giving you nothing. ‌ 'There's one rule: education. I don't care if you play basketball. I don't care about none of that. 'Listen, I got six kids. I would like a doctor, somebody to own a hedge fund, a pharmacist, a lawyer, someone that owns multiple businesses, someone to take over my business. But I tell them I'm not going to hand it to you. You gotta earn.' Shaquille O'Neal has previously spoken about his family not inheriting his wealth (Image:) ‌ Splashing $1.3m in a day O'Neal is eager to teach his kids the value of money, perhaps learning from his past mistakes. The NBA icon proved he could hold a grudge during his time as Kobe Bryant's team-mate at the LA Lakers. However, his willingness to prove a point once proved costly when he entered a car dealership. Arguably one of the most recognisable US sports stars, 'Shaq' has an enviable car collection and felt affronted when a salesperson asked if he could afford a Rolls-Royce. This led to him buying three cars on the same day for £1m ($1.3m), with car customisers West Coast Customs later installing a Superman logo on the grill of his Rolls-Royce Cullinan. "I don't wanna spend $400,000 for a car. So I'm like, 'Hey man how much is this? Nah. How much is this one?'' O'Neal recalled on the REVOLT podcast, as per the Daily Star. 'So finally the old guy says, 'Yo man, you asking about all these cars, can you afford them?' ‌ "Now I'm p*****. I said, 'What the f*** you just said to me?' So I buy three. That one, that one, and that one, and I want them dropped off. Move the seat back. So I got 3 Rolls-Royces that I never drive. So there goes another million." Content cannot be displayed without consent Walmart record In 2008, after signing for the Phoenix Suns, O'Neal was not up for wasting time waiting for his new home to be ready. Instead, he headed out to a 24/7 Walmart and spent $70k in one shopping trip, leading to concerned calls from his bank. ‌ "I have the biggest purchase in Walmart history,' Shaq said on The Late Late Show in 2018. "$70,000. I get traded from Miami to Phoenix, and I'm the type of guy [that] I have no patience. So when I get to Phoenix, they have an apartment for me. Nothing's in it. "Two or three in the morning, I gotta go get four or five TVs, I gotta go get printers, I gotta go get laptops. I gotta go get sheets, towels, underwear, t-shirts.' However, O'Neal got a shock when he reached the checkouts, as his credit card was declined, with his bank suspecting his card had been stolen.'I put it back in, and it said declined again. So now I'm saying, 'Well, I know I'm not broke.' Article continues below "So I just said 'alright, I'll be back' and then the American Express security called me [and he said] 'hey man, somebody stole your credit card and they spent $70,000 at Walmart'. "I said 'no that was me', [the security guard replied] 'what the hell are you buying for $70,000?'"
