Alchemy has been around for thousands of years, and its main goals have been turning metals into gold and finding an elixir of immortality. It has fascinated intellectuals for thousands of years, including Newton, the English physicist who created the mathematical law of universal gravitation in the latter part of the 17th century.
The creation of a "philosopher's stone" that would act as a catalyst to turn base metals like lead into gold was a fantasy of many.
Marathon's concept is based on using components from the well-known nuclear fusion process in its place.
When two hydrogen isotopes, tritium and deuterium, are forced together to form helium, high-energy subatomic particles known as neutrons are released. This process is known as fusion.
In order to achieve this, the deuterium and tritium atoms are heated to extremely high temperatures, more than 100 million degrees Celsius, and then confined to a small area, where they will clash. When helium atoms collide with the fuel particles, their energy is transferred and the reaction continues, making the process self-sustaining.
However, in order to guarantee that there is always an adequate amount of tritium in the mixture, fusion reactors usually contain other elements, such as beryllium, lead, or lithium isotopes.
Because they emit two neutrons in their place when struck by one, these are referred to as "multipliers."
Tritium is subsequently created when these additional neutrons react with lithium.
A radical change
Mercury-198, a typical type of mercury, is used as a multiplier in Marathon's approach. These atoms transform into mercury-197, a less stable form, when struck by a neutron.
Those atoms then spontaneously transform into a stable form of gold over a few days.
According to Marathon, this implies that gold supplies could be produced as a byproduct of the fusion process "without any compromise to fuel self-sufficiency or power output." According to the business, a fusion power station with a one gigawatt capacity could produce 5,000 kilogrammes of gold annually using the new method.
The business states that although the gold generated by the reaction is stable, it may contain some radioactive gold isotopes, which could require storage for up to 18 years.
Marathon's techno-economic modelling indicates that fusion plants could generate as much economic value from the production of gold as they do from the production of electricity, potentially doubling the facilities' value and drastically altering the economics of fusion and energy in general, the start-up continued. In addition to gold, it stated that the transmutation process might be utilised to create materials for "nuclear batteries," medicinal isotope synthesis, and precious metals like palladium.
Adam Rutkowski, a former engineer at SpaceX, Elon Musk's rocket company, and Kyle Schiller, a fellow at Schmidt Futures, the research foundation founded by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, founded Marathon.
The method allows power plants to produce 5,000 kg of gold annually each gigawatt of energy generated (~2.5 GWth) without sacrificing power output or fuel self-sufficiency, claims the startup.
Leading investors including Strong Atomics and the 1517 Fund, as well as multiple grants from the US Department of Energy and the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program, fund Marathon Fusion.

1 2 Nagpur: A recent land use verification exercise by the development plan (DP) unit of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) revealed 30,000 previously unrecorded structures or properties within city limits. This discovery raises serious questions about tax evasion and gaps in civic data integration. The DP unit discovered the structures while verifying existing land use as part of its urban planning mandate. Following the revelation, the NMC's property tax department initiated a detailed cross-verification of the data. Officials plan to superimpose the new findings on the corporation's existing GIS (geographical information system) property database to identify properties not included in the tax net. Speaking to TOI, a senior official from the property tax department said, "The DP team surveyed and marked polygons for structures that do not exist in our current system. These structures may include buildings constructed on what were previously recorded as open plots, and we may already be levying tax based only on open plot status." He added that the property tax department will now overlay the new polygons received from the DP survey onto the GIS database to match them against the existing tax records. It's likely that updated data will capture new buildings constructed in the last few years that were never officially reported," the official said. Currently, NMC levies tax on around 6.37 lakh properties. However, the number of constructed properties may be significantly higher if these 30,000 new units are found to be genuine and taxable. Tax officials admitted that in many cases, building permissions are either delayed or not reported to the tax department, leading to gaps between actual construction and tax assessment. The ongoing integration between the DP's updated land use records and the GIS-based taxation system is expected to bridge this gap. NMC officials confirmed that once the GIS superimposition is completed, a ground-truthing exercise will follow to verify the physical status of each new property. Based on the results, the civic body may issue fresh assessment notices to bring these properties under the tax net — potentially boosting municipal revenue significantly.

New Delhi: Facing criticism for developing a fourth landfill at Singhola after Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur, Municipal Corporation of Delhi claimed that it cleared all the deposited silt at the 7.2-acre location through bioremediation by mid-June. Over six months, 7.59 lakh MT of silt was removed. Following the site clearance, the dumping of silt from eight zones—Shahdara North, Shahdara South, Civil Lines, City SP, Rohini, Narela, Keshav Puram and Karol Bagh—started on July 1 as no alternative location was available, officials said. Daily bioremediation and biomining processes were implemented to prevent substantial waste accumulation, they added. In 2018, Delhi Development Authority allotted the land in Khampur village to the erstwhile east corporation for silt disposal. Subsequently, other agencies, including Public works Department and the irrigation & flood control department, also began utilising the site to dump silt collected during their yearly pre-monsoon drainage cleaning operations. Bengaluru: When Indian developers previously queried Google's AI models, their requests travelled thousands of kilometres to servers in other countries before returning with responses. That status quo changed a bit when Google unveiled four announcements at its developer-focused I/O event in Bengaluru on Wednesday, with one of the announcements being the localisation of AI processing within India's borders. "Indian developers can now use the powerful AI capabilities of Gemini 2.5 Flash here in India," Bikram Singh Bedi, vice president of Google Cloud Asia Pacific, told TOI. "Processing will now be available in India, and this is going to be critical from a perspective of data residency as well as low latency." The announcement addresses two critical concerns for Indian businesses – data residency regulatory concerns and latency issues. Previously, queries to Google's AI models would route through servers in the US or other global regions, not anymore though. Last year's Gen AI Exchange programme—an online academy and hackathon series launched by Google and supported by the central govt—registered 270,000 learners and reached five million developers through satellite events. "Courses completed have topped thirty thousand, but that is only the warm-up," Bedi said, announcing a second edition hackathon that opens for entries next month. Winners will receive Google Cloud credits, mentoring, and a fast track to showcase their projects at next year's I/O. The exchange, launched first in India and now spreading worldwide, is designed to close what Google and other analysts peg as a severe skills gap across IT and security roles. According to Bedi, enterprises in India are rapidly adopting AI in a slew of different verticals. "Look at Federal Bank of India - they are leveraging our AI to improve customer service. They have this friendly AI personal assistant called Fedi," Bedi explained. "They are seeing a 25% rise in customer satisfaction and 50% saving in customer care cost." Mahindra & Mahindra is another example of a large Indian conglomerate leveraging AI in diverse ways, said Bedi. "They are using our Google Cloud Vertex AI platform for cutting-edge work in R&D, engineering, simulations, and manufacturing plants. They're looking at use cases like zero breakdown, energy consumption optimization, among others," Bedi said. Uttar Pradesh, Bedi said, is building an open agricultural network on Gemini "to put micro climate data and market prices in every farmer's pocket". Such examples, he argued, show that generative AI has moved from a curiosity to a basic requirement for organisations and state govts that want to stay competitive.
