Shravani Mela Begins, Lakhs Of Kanwariyas Embark On 108 Km Pilgrimage
The world-renowned Shravani Mela commenced on Thursday at Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Jharkhand, with lakhs of Kanwariyas thronging the sacred town to begin their month-long pilgrimage during the holy month of Sawan.
The fair was formally inaugurated at Dumma, on the Jharkhand-Bihar border, in a traditional ceremony marked by Vedic chants.
Jharkhand ministers Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Deepika Pandey Singh, and Sanjay Prasad Yadav jointly inaugurated the event.
Baba Baidyanath Dham houses Kamna Mahadev, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, making it one of the holiest Shaivite shrines. As per custom, Kanwariyas fetch holy water from the Uttarvahini Ganga in Sultanganj, Bihar, and walk 108 km barefoot to offer it at the Deoghar shrine.
This annual religious procession is considered the longest religious fair in Asia, covering a 108 km route from Sultanganj to Deoghar.
The pilgrimage, which began on Thursday, coinciding with Guru Purnima, saw thousands of Kanwariyas filling the roads chanting "Bol Bam", creating a spiritual spectacle.
The Jharkhand government has estimated that 50 to 60 lakh devotees from across India and abroad are likely to attend the fair this year.
To manage the massive footfall, the state government has made elaborate arrangements for accommodation, safety, sanitation, and information dissemination.
Tent cities equipped with essential amenities have been established at Kothiya and Baghmara along the Deoghar-Sultanganj route, providing rest areas for thousands of pilgrims.
Facilities such as bathing rooms, toilets, medical camps, and information centres have been set up at key locations across the mela zone.
The fair has adopted a digital format, allowing devotees to access real-time information through QR codes on their mobile phones. A dedicated chatbot service is also available for assistance.
Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Naman Priyesh said that keeping in view the heavy influx of devotees, all VIP, VVIP, and out-of-turn darshan privileges have been suspended for the entire month of Sawan to ensure smooth crowd flow and fairness.
Additionally, touch worship of the Jyotirlinga is not permitted. Devotees can offer holy water through Argha -- a ritual vessel placed inside the temple to facilitate offerings.
To help pilgrims, shuttle services have been started for those arriving by bus. Holding points, clean drinking water, accommodation facilities, toilets, healthcare camps, and sanitation services are being closely monitored.
Officials, magistrates, and police personnel deployed in the area have been instructed to perform their duties.

After Haridwar stampede jolt, Uttarakhand looks at regulating pilgrim flow
A day after the Haridwar stampede, the Uttarakhand government is looking to form guidelines for crowd management, pilgrim registration, and widening of footpaths and stairways. The government is also in the process of introducing policies to remove encroachments and provide essential amenities to devotees for a 'smooth and safe pilgrimage experience', the Chief Minister's Office said. On Sunday, eight people died in a stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi mandir following panic triggered by a rumoured electrical hazard around 100 metres from the temple's entrance. The three-metre-wide ramp, where the stampede took place, was used by a massive crowd entering and exiting the temple. This path was further encroached on one side by shops. Some survivors had alleged the shopkeepers did not let them in. Mansa Devi temple authorities do not keep a count of the number of visitors each day, but staff estimate that around 20,000 people reached the temple between 5 am and 9 am on Sunday. Staff managing the ropeway infrastructure at the temple said that with 27 cable cars, they see a crowd of over 6,000 on most days during Sawan. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, during a high-level meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, directed officials to ensure proper arrangements at the state's major religious sites such as the Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples in Haridwar, Purnagiri Dham in Tanakpur, Kainchi Dham in Nainital, Jageshwar Temple in Almora, and the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple in Pauri, keeping in mind the large number of devotees. He directed that a committee be constituted under the chairmanship of the commissioners of both Garhwal and Kumaon divisions. This committee will include the district magistrates of the districts concerned, senior superintendents of police, vice-chairpersons of the development authorities, and representatives from executing agencies. The CMO said that they will look at the planned development of the Mansa Devi temple complex and other major temple premises. 'Mandatory registration of pilgrims must be implemented, and the number of pilgrims allowed for darshan should be regulated through a phased system, to ensure effective crowd control and a hassle-free experience for devotees,' the CMO said. Chhattisgarh CM Sai showers flowers on Kanwariyas from chopper; unveils Rs146cr Bhoramdeo spiritual tourism plan
RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Monday organized a flower shower from a helicopter over thousands of Kanwariyas (Shiva devotees) marching in Kabirdham district as part of the third Monday of the holy Sawan month. Speaking to the media at the airstrip, CM Sai said that the govt is developing 'Bhoramdeo corridor' with a budget of Rs 146 crore which will have special facilities for pilgrims. We are also in talks with the Madhya Pradesh govt to provide land in Amarkantak for setting up rest houses for Kanwariyas, CM said. Chief Minister along with deputy chief ministers Vijay Sharma, Arun Sao, and assembly speaker Dr. Raman Singh, took part in the spiritual celebration. Each year, Kanwariyas undertake a 100-km foot march from Amarkantak in MP to Bhoramdeo in Chhattisgarh, to offer sacred water at the historic temple. The govt organized a grand welcome, with local MLA Bhawna Bohra leading arrangements at Kabirdham. Speaking to the media, CM Sai said the project would not only revamp the historic Bhoramdeo Temple complex but also integrate other spiritually significant sites, including Madwa Mahal, Cherki Mahal, Ramchua, and Saroda Reservoir, creating a seamless spiritual and heritage circuit. Located in Choura village, 18 km from Kawardha, the Bhoramdeo Temple is a sacred 11th-century archaeological marvel where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Baba Bhoramdeo. Thousands of pilgrims from Kabirdham, Mungeli, Bemetara, Khairagarh, Rajnandgaon, and even Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh are participating this year as they undertake this journey barefoot, wearing saffron clothes, trekking up to 150 kilometers through rocky forest paths, reaffirming their faith with each step.
