"BJP, JDS playing politics with dead bodies": Karnataka Dy CM DK Shivakumar on Bengaluru stampede
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 5 (ANI): Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (secular) for 'playing politics with dead bodies, as he addressed the media for the first time after the Bengaluru stampede.
Addressing the reporters, Shivakumar broke down while expressing his grief, and reaffirmed his support to the families who have been hurt by the loss of their loved ones.
While expressing grief over the stampede, Shivakumar added, 'I don't want to play dirty politics. BJP and JDS always play politics on dead bodies; that is their political agenda. But they should see what they have done, we are deeply hurt, the image of Karnataka, Bangalore, we take it, we are not blaming others, though it has happened very unexpectedly.'
'We must learn an administrative lesson, let the opposition do politics on dead bodies. I will list how many dead bodies they have done politics on. But it hurts to see the little children. I have seen their pain,' he added.
Further hitting out at JDS leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy, he said, 'Kumaraswamy has been playing politics on the dead bodies, that is his profession. I will not do politics like him about what happened during his administration. I am worried about children, I saw small children. I saw ten people. No family can digest it. I came to know about the matter from the media. Even the RCB management could not go there.'
Eleven people died and more than 30 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy stadium as a huge crowd of nearly 3 lakh people had gathered to witness the victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for winning the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The Deputy CM said that the state government was shocked and reiterated that it was an unexpected event which had happened.
'We never expected such a crowd after 18 years. Things have happened, now let us be part of the grief. It is our family members, we all are shocked, CM, Home Minister, entire government,' he told reporters here.
Shivakumar also claimed that the IPL team had earlier only announced to the media that they were coming to the city, and that the state government had 'no option' but to allow the event.
'We did not expect such an incident to happen in our state. RCB had told the media that they were coming (to Bengaluru). We didn't have an option; what happened here happened in our home. Everyone has their pain in their own home. I cannot say that one or two people are wrong here. We must also learn a lesson from this,' he said.
He also claimed that as soon as the news of a stampede was known, he told the organisers and officials to stop the event, however, officials were not allowed to make any announcement.
'We were not even allowed to make any announcements there, I did not know who was going there. Then the commissioner came and told us he had done one or two things. I immediately told him to stop the program. No speech, nothing. This is not a time to blame anyone. It does not matter what politicians say, it is only their opinion,' he said.
Earlier, Union Minister Kumaraswamy held Shivakumar responsible for the stampede, alleging that the incident was caused by the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister's 'impatience, immaturity, and irresponsibility.'
The Union Minister demanded that 'the person responsible for this tragedy must be immediately sacked from the cabinet.'
Following the stampede, the Karnataka High Court has taken cognisance of the RCB Victory Parade stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium and is set to hear a PIL into the matter later today. (ANI)

'CM's office instructed full arrangements despite risks': Section of police force fumes, says senior officers have been made scapegoats
BENGALURU: The suspension of Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda and four other senior officers has triggered a backlash within the police force. From constables to inspectors, many are furious and feel betrayed by the very govt they serve. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A police inspector said the suspensions in this context is unprecedented in Indian policing, adding that the state govt was directly involved in organising the celebrations. 'The chief minister's office instructed him (Dayananda) to proceed with full arrangements regardless of the risks. If accountability must be fixed, it should start with those in the govt,' he said. Head constable Narasimharaju from Madiwala police station staged a protest in front of Raj Bhavan against Dayananda's suspension. He was detained, taken to Vidhana Soudha police station, and released after providing an apology. An assistant sub-inspector from the central division, termed the suspensions politically motivated. 'There is video proof of deputy CM DK Shivakumar waving the RCB flag and welcoming the team. They wanted to take credit, and now they've made scapegoats of hardworking officers. It's demoralising.' 'The police commissioner was against holding a function at Vidhana Soudha. He had pushed for hosting it only at the stadium, but the CM's office insisted on going ahead. We're being punished for following orders,' said a senior inspector. He added: 'We work round the clock, sacrificing family time. And this is what we get!' The chief secretary and other IAS officers are also being castigated by the police force for throwing caution to the wind. Police personnel argue that Dayananda worked tirelessly to make the city safer. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They say he should not have been punished for a disaster that, they claim, speaks more about the political establishment's greed to bask in the glory of the IPL champions than any real policing lapse. A head constable from south-east division said they were on crowd control from June 3, the night of the IPL final. 'We barely had any rest. Yet, by afternoon on June 4, we were told to again report for duty near the stadium [Chinnaswamy]. And now, they're targeting the commissioner who stood by us!'

Bengaluru stampede: Sidda's political secretary sacked
Bengaluru: The political secretary of Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, K Govindraju, has been sacked, and the state intelligence department head, Hemant Nimbalkar, has been transferred over the Bengaluru stampede that claimed 11 lives. Govindraju is also the head of the state Olympic association and the key person who pressured the Chief Minister to hold the RCB victory event at Vidhana Soudha. The Karnataka government has taken several steps in the wake of the unfortunate incident, including the filing of FIRs against the representatives of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). A political row has also erupted in the state with the BJP accusing the Congress-led state government of making the police a 'scapegoat" in the incident. Hitting back, Siddaramaiah on Friday criticised the saffron regiment for politicising the stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The CM stated that action was taken against officials who were found to be 'visibly responsible" and 'negligent in their duty." 'They are doing it for politics. I don't do politics. We have taken action against those who were visibly responsible and found to be negligent in their duty," he said.

RCB, event firm execs held as K'taka shunts out CM's aide to quell anger
Four executives, one from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and three from an event management firm, were arrested and chief minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary was ousted on Friday as the Karnataka government moved to fend off criticism over the deaths of 11 fans during chaotic celebrations for RCB's Indian Premier League (IPL) title victory earlier this week. The police arrested Nikhil Sosale, in charge of RCB's marketing and revenue — who moved the Karnataka high court against the action — and DNA Entertainment Private Limited executives Sunil Mathew, Kiran Kumar and Sumanth R. Police had booked RCB, DNA and as well as the state cricket body for culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and assault on Thursday. Another first information report (FIR) was filed against the three organisations following a complaint by Rohan Gomes , 25, who survived the chaos, which also injured 56. However, the high court restrained state police from taking coercive action against top officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). As the political backlash grew, the Congress government removed chief minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary K Govindaraj and also transferred additional director general of police (ADGP), intelligence, Hemant Nimbalkar on Friday. The government did not reveal the reasons for their removal. However, people aware of the matter said Govindaraj was removed followed criticism of his reported involvement in the event. Govindaraj denied any involvement ahead of his removal. The Opposition BJP and the JD(S) jointly lashed out at the Congress government, saying police officers were being made the 'scapegoats' for the tragedy and alleging that the entire responsibility for the incident lies with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar. Karnataka BJP general secretary P Rajeev said he has filed a police complaint seeking legal action against Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar and Home Minister G Parameshwara. Shivakumar accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of 'politicising dead bodies', as the opposition party in the state blamed the government for the mayhem. 'They (opposition) are trying to do politics over dead bodies. We are not doing it. We have do they have to target me? In what way am I responsible?' he said. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of thousands of people thronged the Chinnaswamy stadium. The RCB team landed at the HAL airport at 2.45pm, and were received by Shivakumar. The first felicitation ceremony was organised by the state government at the Vidhana Soudha around 4.30pm. The 11 fans, mainly students or young IT professionals, died after they were caught in the crush at the gates . The first deaths were reported around two ambulances were present and 1,318 policemen were deployed, the government told the high court on Thursday. In comparison, around 5,000 were deployed for the 2024 World Cup victory parade in Mumbai. The crush led to four deaths at Gate 7, two at Gate 6, one at Gate 1, and four more between Gates 17 and 21, the government told the court. At a press conference on Thursday, Siddaramaiah ordered the arrests of representatives of the organisations booked by police, announced a judicial probe and said that five police officers, including the city's top cop B Dayananda, were suspended. On Friday evening, a city court in Bengaluru sent the four arrested men to 14 days' judicial custody. The high court will hear Sosale's plea challenging his arrest on June 9. 'A few arrests have been made. Ultimately, the case has to go to CID. So before that, whatever legal formalities have to be done by our team are being done,' Bengaluru's new police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said. Gomes, 25, in his complaint, said that he reached Gate 17 after seeing social media posts by RCB indicating that the tickets will be issued at the venue and that entry would be allowed without a ticket. He also alleged that RCB publicised a victory parade in an open-top bus. Sosale's lawyers, in his petition, argued that he was detained solely on the basis of an oral directive from the chief minister, without a preliminary inquiry or investigation. 'The Petitioner's arrest is motivated and an attempt to shift the blame of the tragedy to RCSPL and its officials,' the plea said, referring to Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, the company that owns the franchise. KSCA, meanwhile, argued that it had no operational role in the event and merely rented the stadium to RCB's management company. It claimed RCB, through DNA, bore full responsibility for managing the entry and exit gates. It further alleged that the cricket body was being scapegoated to deflect criticism away from government leaders who had facilitated a separate ceremony at Vidhana Soudha earlier in the day. Granting KSCA officials interim protection from arrest till June 16, Karnataka high court judge justice SR Krishna Kumar directed that no 'precipitative action' be taken against KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, who are among the accused named in one of FIRs registered by police over the tragedy. The court however, directed the petitioners to cooperate with the ongoing investigation, and barred them from leaving its jurisdiction. (With PTI inputs)
