PMK leader Anbumani seeks 10.5 per cent quota for Vanniyars, stages protest in Villupuram

VILLUPURAM: Condemning the state's delay in introducing the 10.5% internal quota for Vanniyars, PMK president Dr Anbumani led a protest on Sunday, which drew participation from PMK cadre and members of Vanniyar associations.
Anbumani claimed the Supreme Court order (that struck down the 10.5% internal quota for Vanniyars) delivered over 1,200 days ago did not say the state had to conduct a caste count to introduce the quota or that it needed the centre's nod to do so.
He claimed the DMK government could have introduced the quota after the verdict. 'If the reservation had been implemented, today 3,800 Vanniyars would have become doctors and 6,000 would have secured government jobs,' he said. He alleged that 80,000 students were denied college admissions due to suspension of the quota.
Anbumani further said the 38 Vanniyar MLAs from major parties should boycott the Assembly until the quota is reinstated. 'We will launch more intense protests if our demands are ignored,' he added. He said that no Vanniyar vote should go to DMK in the 2026 Assembly election.

Bengaluru toxic flow polluting Thenpennai: CPCB

CHENNAI: The central government has confirmed that Thenpennai river, flowing from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, is severely polluted due to unchecked discharge of industrial effluents and untreated sewage from Bengaluru's sprawling urban and industrial zones. In a written reply to a question from DMK MP TR Baalu in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh admitted the downstream stretches of rivers like the Thenpennai are heavily contaminated. The ministry's statement corroborated findings by Tamil Nadu authorities and national monitoring agencies that identified the river at Chokkarasanapalli Bridge in Karnataka – near Tamil Nadu border – as a Priority-I polluted river stretch, the most critical category under national classification. Water quality data collected under the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme revealed alarming figures: Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels at Chokkarasanapalli ranged between 17 and 52.4 mg/L, far exceeding the safe threshold of 3 mg/L. Even more concerning was the total coliform levels – an indicator of fecal contamination – peaking between 16 lakh and 350 lakh MPN/100 ML, alongside dangerously low dissolved oxygen levels. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that in some cases, dissolved oxygen is below detectable limits.

DMK spent Rs 22 crore on ads without tenders: AIADMK gen sec EPS

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday said that since launching the statewide tour titled 'Let us protect Tamil Nadu people and reclaim the state' from July 7, so far, he has covered 46 Assembly constituencies in 10 districts and would be continuing his visit in the coming days, meeting all sections of the people. In a statement, Palaniswami alleged that DMK government misuses public funds for personal image-building, citing Rs 22 crore spent on advertisements without tenders, and naming schemes after former CM M Karunanidhi. He described the DMK regime led by Chief Minister M K Stalin as a 'failure model government' which 'failed to fulfil the expectations of the people on all counts'. Palaniswami also said that the AIADMK has launched a new campaign titled 'Against DMK's Lies and Thefts – For Truth and Rights', calling upon the people of Tamil Nadu to submit report cards highlighting the failures of the DMK government. The AIADMK leader accused the DMK of running a family-dominated, anti-people, and dictatorial administration, which has failed to fulfil even 10% of its 525 poll promises while claiming 98% implementation. He also slammed the DMK for rising taxes, unaffordable construction costs, law and order deterioration and widespread drug abuse.

Telangana MLAs, MPs to knock on President's door for assent to BC reservation Bills

Congress MLAs and MPs from Telangana are set to leave for Delhi to meet President Draupadi Murmu to demand the passing of two Bills that provide for 42% reservation for Backward Classes in the state. The Bills were passed in March in the state Assembly and were sent to Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma for his assent. Varma then sent the Bills to the President for assent on March 30 this year. The decision was taken after a five-hour Cabinet meeting. Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, minister Ponnam Prabhakar said, 'On August 5, 6 and 7, under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, a delegation of Congress MLAs and MPs and other Opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will seek appointment with the President.' The Bills provide for 42% reservation for BCs in education, employment and local body polls. Telangana, as per a High Court order, has to conduct its civic polls by August 30. 'As we have to conduct the local body polls by August 30, we have to get the President's assent for the Bills soon,' Prabhakar said. He said that the Bills cannot be struck down for breaching the 50% reservation cap. 'When there is empirical data for the population of BCs, reservation should be based on this population data. Already, the 50% cap is breached with EWS quota,' Prabhakar said, adding that Congress stands for social justice. Telangana's caste survey had revealed that the population of BCs is at 56.3% in the state. 'We have empirical data to prove that there is a need to breach the reservation cap,' Prabhakar said. He also said that Telangana's caste census should set an example for other states in the country. Prabhakar, who himself is a BC leader, also said that BC leaders from the state, including those from the BJP, should support this effort to get the President's assent for the Bills.
