Andrew Cuomo's Brother Rages Against AOC After NYC Mayoral Candidate She Endorsed Won Primary: 'She's a Deranged Form of Democrat'

The brother of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo seethed at Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez after Zohran Mamdani, the candidate she endorsed for New York City's mayoral race, won the Democratic primary.
Former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo appeared on NewsNation, the network he currently anchors for, and raged against the New York Representative on Wednesday.
"The majority is not afraid of migrants, as Trump may like, but they are afraid of these guys. Iranian nationals with jihadist sympathies. You let them in with a laxity that AOC and other radicals insisted on. And the far left is actively embracing people who are the enemy," Chris stated.
"Pro-hamas, people who chant 'globalise the intifada,' the Palestinian uprising characterized by over 130 suicide bombings. Really? And I'm not picking on AOC. I respect her success in developing a following. I just think that she's killing her party," he continued.
"She is a deranged form of Democrat and I'm pointing her out because she's at the top of the food chain. A recent CNN poll found she's the top Democratic leader who best reflects the core values of the Democratic Party, and this is by Democratic voters," he added.
AOC endorsed Zohran Mamdani for the NYC mayoral race earlier this month.
"Assemblymember Mamdani has demonstrated a real ability on the ground to put together a coalition of working-class New Yorkers that is strongest to lead the pack," she said. "In the final stretch of the race, we need to get very real about that."
She congratulated the 33-year-old state lawmaker on his victory Tuesday night after Andrew Cuomo conceded to Mamdani.
"Congratulations, @ZohranKMamdani !" the congresswoman wrote on X. "Your dedication to an affordable, welcoming, and safe New York City where working families can have a shot has inspired people across the city. Billionaires and lobbyists poured millions against you and our public finance system. And you won."

Stocks Down With Eyes On Mideast, Dollar Hit By Trump Fed Comment

Most stocks fell Thursday and oil rose as traders kept a nervous eye on the Iran-Israel ceasefire, while the dollar dropped after Donald Trump said he had a handful of candidates to succeed Federal Reserve boss Jerome Powell, fuelling rate cut bets. Uncertainty over the US president's trade war was also keeping sentiment subdued, with most countries still not reaching deals with Washington to avert the reimposition of steep tariffs ahead of a July 9 deadline. With a shaky peace between Iran and Israel holding for now, Trump said he would hold nuclear talks with Tehran next week, even after insisting that US strikes had set its atomic programme back "decades". "We may sign an agreement. I don't know," he told reporters. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had said Tuesday his country was willing to return to negotiations but that it would continue to "assert its legitimate rights" to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Crude prices, which tanked Monday and Tuesday after the ceasefire was announced, edged up for a second day, though gains were capped by the possibility that OPEC and other key producers will lift output. "While the Israel-Iran conflict is now de-escalating, we still believe that geopolitical risks remain where the ceasefire could easily fall apart," wrote Kai Wang, Asia equity market strategist at Morningstar. "While this possibility remains elevated, we do not believe that there would be a restriction on oil supply even under a re-escalating scenario. Given that oil has retreated to preconflict price levels, we believe that any future increase in oil price is likely to be short-lived." Equity markets were mostly down, with Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Singapore, Seoul, Jakarta and Wellington in the red but Tokyo and Taipei in positive territory. That came after a tepid lead from Wall Street, where the Nasdaq was the standout after chip titan Nvidia shot up more than four percent to a record high, giving it a market valuation of around $3.76 trillion. That makes it more valuable than Microsoft, Apple and other tech giants. The dollar held losses after Trump's latest salvo against Powell and suggestion that he was already lining up his replacement. Since returning to the White House the president has constantly hit out at the Fed boss for not cutting rates, questioning his intelligence and stoking worries about the bank's independence. "I know within three or four people who I'm going to pick," he told reporters after a NATO summit. "I mean he goes out pretty soon fortunately because I think he's terrible," Trump said of Powell, whose term ends in May next year. Trump added that Powell was "average mentally" and had "low IQ for what he does". The Wall Street Journal reported that the Republican was considering making an announcement in September or October, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, economic adviser Kevin Hassett and former Fed governor Kevin Warsh among the contenders. Trump's remarks came days after Powell told lawmakers the bank needed to see the impact of the president's tariffs on the economy before making a move. "Trump's nomination will amp up the pressure, to the point where we could have a shadow Fed chair before Powell steps down in May next year," said National Australia Bank's Rodrigo Catril. "We think it's fair to suggest that the pressure on Powell to cut rates will increase, and that's adding to selling pressure on the dollar." UN Charter: A Founding Document Violated And Ignored

Eighty years ago Thursday, 50 countries came together in the ashes of World War II to sign the United Nations' founding charter in order "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war." UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres insisted this week the Charter "is a promise of peace, dignity and cooperation among nations." But critics say the organization has been utterly helpless in stopping the countless conflicts that have broken out since and continue around the globe today. Here is a look at the UN Charter's history. Conceived in the early years of World War II and signed on June 26, 1945 in San Francisco, the charter paved the way for the creation of the United Nations on October 24, 1945. In 19 chapters and 111 articles, the Charter lays out the principles of international relations, including the peaceful settlement of disputes, sovereignty and equality between states, humanitarian cooperation, and respect for human rights. If there is a threat to global peace, Chapter VII gives the UN Security Council the power to impose sanctions to enforce its decisions or even deploy military force. The Charter, which is very difficult to amend, also establishes the Security Council, with its five veto-wielding permanent members, the General Assembly and the Secretariat, as well as the International Court of Justice. The United Nations currently has 193 member states. But for all the good words, the Charter's principles have been continually violated across the planet for eight decades. Member states rarely agree whether self-determination trumps non-interference in a state's internal affairs, or if the right to self-defense can justify acts of aggression. In the most recent example, Tehran, backed by veto-wielding China, accused Washington of violating the UN Charter by striking Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, an act the United States justified by the right to "collective self-defense." And the international community has never really addressed the "crime of aggression," said Gissou Nia, a fellow with the Atlantic Council think tank, be it Russia's war against Ukraine or the US invasion of Iraq. "And once impunity reigns on one set of violations, one that's never dealt with, it continues, and countries use it as justification for the actions that they take," Nia told AFP. She added: "For self-defense, you really have to show evidence of an imminent attack. I think that it's one of the more contentious issues that involve the UN Charter and the narrative has really gotten away from us." Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was denounced as a clear violation of the Charter by Guterres and the General Assembly, but not by the Security Council, where Russia has a veto. And even though the Charter allows for persistent violators to be expelled from the UN, that has never happened. In 1974, the UN did, however, suspend South Africa from the General Assembly over the crimes of apartheid, a ban that lasted two decades.
