Haryana Cong. wants BJP govt. to file contempt proceedings against Punjab on SYL canal issue

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Thursday asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the State to file contempt proceedings against the Punjab government in connection with the construction of Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, the focal point of a water-sharing dispute between Haryana and Punjab. He said the Supreme Court has already decided the SYL canal matter in favour of Haryana, and it is now the responsibility of the Union government to get Haryana its due share. Reacting to the series of meetings between the Centre, Punjab and Haryana governments on SYL, Mr. Hooda said in a press conference here: 'Instead of playing the game of meetings, the BJP government should file a contempt case against the Punjab government in the court as the Supreme Court's decision has come in favour of Haryana a long time ago. The court had handed over the responsibility of getting Haryana's share of water to the Central government. There is a BJP government both in Haryana and at the Centre. In such a situation, Haryana should have got its share of water by now, but this could not happen due to the anti-Haryana attitude of the BJP.' 'Congress repeatedly said that the Punjab government is disobeying the decision of the Supreme Court, but the Haryana government kept wasting time by holding fruitless meetings. It is the BJP government, during whose tenure the already built SYL canal in Punjab was dismantled,' he added. Mr. Hooda also expressed concern over the prevailing law and order in the State. 'Every resident of the State is living under the shadow of fear. Murders have become so common. Crimes against every section, including women and Dalits, are increasing,'Mr. Hooda alleged.

Maharashtra's Islampur to become ‘Ishwarpur'? Decoding Mahayuti's renaming politics

The Mahayuti government, in yet another renaming round in Maharashtra, has decided to change the names of Islampur in Sangli district and Chhatri Nizampur in Raigad district. The BJP-led coalition announced that Islampur is henceforth going to be called 'Ishwarpur' and Chhatri Nizampur 'Raigadwadi'.In the recent monsoon session of the state legislature, food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal announced that the cabinet had approved the change in Islampur's name, and this would be sent to the Union government for renaming has been a demand of Hindu right-wing groups since the 1980s. The outfit Shiv Pratishtan Hindustan, led by the controversial demagogue Sambhajirao Bhide 'Guruji', has been vociferous over Gore, minister for rural development, announced the renaming of Chhatri Nizampur. The village is located at the foothills of the Raigad fort, which was the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar had sought the renaming of the gram panchayat. The decision to change Islampur's name to Ishwarpur has been criticised by Jayant Patil, former finance minister and former state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar). Patil has represented the assembly constituency since 1990, and his father Rajarambapu Patil has been a three-term MLA from the seat (1962, 1967, 1972).Jayant Patil said merely changing the name of the town would not solve its problems, and charged that the government had contributed little towards resolving these Padalkar said the name change was in line with 'lokabhavana', or public sentiment. 'Those who take an anti-Hindu position will be crushed henceforth,' declared Padalkar, known for his incendiary is the latest change in the Islamic-sounding names of cities and districts and, as saner voices say, an attempt to blur Muslim identity. In 2023, the Maharashtra government had announced that Ahmednagar district will be renamed 'Ahilyanagar' after the 18th century warrior queen Ahilyadevi Holkar of was aimed at placating the numerically-significant Dhangar community, which forms a part of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. The Dhangars form significant numbers in western Maharashtra and Marathwada and are seen as second in numerical terms after the year, the Union government also approved the change in the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv, and Osmanabad are named after Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan. The name Ahmednagar too is derived from Ahmed Nizamshah, who founded the Nizamshahi dynasty and the town in the 15th renaming of Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar is meant to mark the memory of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was tortured and killed after being captured by Aurangzeb's forces in May 1988, then Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, who was reinventing himself as a Hindutva mascot from being a nativist politician, had made the demand in a public meeting at Aurangabad. Since then, Aurangabad was always referred to as 'Sambhajinagar' by Shiv Sena leaders and the renaming of Aurangabad may open the proverbial Pandora's Box, with most such demands coming forth from caste-based and identity-based groups. Already, there are demands for the names of cities and even railway stations being changed. This includes Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur and Nagpur; Ahmednagar district; and the Churchgate, Dadar and Mumbai Central railway stations in of these demands are competing in nature. For instance, the Maharashtra assembly in 2020 approved a resolution recommending to the Union government that the Mumbai Central station be named after philanthropist Jagannath 'Nana' Shankarsheth Murkute, who played a seminal role in the growth and development of Mumbai in the colonial era. But Dalit groups want it to be renamed after Dr Babasaheb takes its cultural markers and political totems seriously. In 1978, the Sharad Pawar-led Progressive Democratic Front coalition decided to name the Marathwada University in Aurangabad after Ambedkar. This was resented by members of the dominant Maratha move led to targeted violence against Dalits, especially Buddhist Dalits, in the region. The university was eventually renamed in January 1994 as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, with a new varsity named after Swami Ramanand Tirtha, the hero of Marathwada liberation movement, being created at Nanded as a consolation to those opposing the 'Namantar' movement that called for the renaming produced Dalit leaders such as Union minister Ramdas Athavale and former MP Jogendra Kawade. It also led to caste counter-mobilisation, resulting in the Shiv Sena gaining political space in Marathwada, which was its first opening outside the Mumbai-Thane region. However, the social cleavages that were accentuated during the decade-and-a-half-long movement persist in the Marathwada region even to India Today Magazine- EndsMust Watch

'I will not call Trump': Angry over US tariff hike, Brazilian President calls PM Modi, discusses..., Trump should be worried because...

PM Modi brazil visit- Image- IANS New Delhi: In a significant development on Thursday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a telephone call from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a day after US President Donald Trump issued an executive order slapping 25 per cent additional tariff on Indian goods. As per a release shared by the Prime Minister's office, the two leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, technology, energy, defence, agriculture, health, and people-to-people ties. However, the reason due to which the telephone call is receiving world-wide attention are the recent 'anti-Trump' statements given by the Brazilian President. What has President of Brazil said on Donald Trump? Notably, Lula da Silva, the President of Brazil had said, 'I will not call Trump because he doesn't want to talk, I will call Xi Jinping, I will call PM Modi, I will not call Putin right now because he is not in a position to travel, but I will call many more presidents'. What was discussed between PM Modi and Brazilian President? PM Modi and the Brazilian President also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement. During the telephonic conversation, the prime minister recalled his visit to Brazil last month, the press release said. Later, Modi in a post on X said, 'Had a good conversation with President Lula. Thanked him for making my visit to Brazil memorable and meaningful. We are committed to deepening our Strategic Partnership including in trade, energy, tech, defence, health and more. A strong, people-centric partnership between Global South nations benefits everyone.' How is Brazil planning to challenge US tariffs? Notably, Brazil is preparing to formally challenge the newly imposed US tariffs at the World Trade Organization (WTO) while keeping the door open to negotiations, a report by IANS news agency said. The move comes after US President Donald Trump announced a 50 per cent tariff on a range of Brazilian exports, including coffee, beef and petrochemicals. (With inputs from agencies)
