IMD issues heavy rainfall alerts, weather could affect I-Day celebrations
Heavy rain alerts were issued for Thursday in 24 districts in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, with some parts of the state set to see heavy showers on Independence Day. In view of Wednesday night's torrential rainfall in state capital Lucknow, District Magistrate Vishak G has ordered all schools from Classes 1 to 12 to remain closed on August 14. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the current monsoon spell is set to intensify in western Uttar Pradesh from Thursday, with an orange alert for very heavy rainfall issued for Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Bijnor. Senior scientist Atul Kumar Singh of the Regional Meteorological Centre said that after the intense showers in eastern UP and the Terai region, western UP is expected to receive significant rainfall on Thursday and Friday.

Early morning tremors trigger panic in Vikarabad
1 2 Hyderabad: Tremors were felt in Parigi mandal of Vikarabad district early Thursday morning following an earthquake. Locals reported that the tremors lasted for at least four seconds, shaking parts of Basireddypalli, Rangapur, Qutbullapur and Nyamathnagar villages. Startled residents rushed out of their houses and stood on the roads, keeping a safe distance from buildings. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake measured 3.1 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremor was recorded at 3.56 am. No damage to property or loss of life was reported immediately. Vikarabad district collector Prateek Jain and superintendent of police K Narayana Reddy visited the affected villages and interacted with residents to gather first-hand account of their experience. Officials were instructed to conduct surveys of houses in the villages to check for cracks or any structural damage and to submit a detailed report.
