Uproar in House as Sena (UBT) comes down heavily on Shinde for ‘corruption in BMC' remark
Replying to a debate under Rule 293 on urban development and housing, Shinde — who also holds the urban development portfolio — said the Mahayuti government had accelerated stalled redevelopment projects in Mumbai and promised that the 'Marathi manoos' who had left the city due to lack of affordable housing would now return. He announced the clearance of 21 cluster redevelopment schemes and assured completion of several long-pending projects in partnership with state-run utilities.
Referring to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), Shinde rejected criticism about private control being given to Adani group, saying the state government was actively involved through the Slum Rehabilitation Authority and dismissed claims that the Adani Group had been handed the project without safeguards.
He also announced an online portal for pothole-related complaints and incentives for redevelopment in airport funnel zones.
However, his sharp remarks accusing the previous BMC administration — controlled by Uddhav Thackeray's Sena — of large-scale irregularities triggered a furore from the Opposition benches.
After Shinde's speech, Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav rose to respond but was denied the opportunity by Speaker Rahul Narwekar, who maintained that only Aaditya Thackeray, who had initiated the debate, could exercise the right to reply — and he was not present in the House at the time.
The decision led to loud protests from the Opposition, with Sena (UBT) members accusing the Speaker of bias and siding with the ruling alliance. Amid the din, the Speaker adjourned the House for 10 minutes.
When proceedings resumed, Cabinet Minister Shambhuraj Desai (Shiv Sena) and Shinde objected to the alleged gestures made by Jadhav and Thackeray towards the Chair. Shinde also accused Jadhav of daring the Speaker to suspend him — calling it 'unacceptable conduct.'
Ajay Chaudhari, leader of the Sena (UBT) in the Assembly, defended his colleague, arguing that the right to reply was not restricted to a single member and that Thackeray had momentarily stepped out due to official commitments.
Outside the House, Jadhav accused the Speaker of acting like a government functionary. 'The Speaker has abandoned neutrality. He denied the Opposition the basic right to reply. Shinde's speech was full of falsehood, and we were not allowed to counter it,' he said, alleging that several critical issues, including civic concerns in Thane and other cities, education, anganwadis, and water supply, were ignored in Shinde's response.
Outside the house, Aaditya Thackeray further criticised Shinde and challenged him for a one-hour public debate on the working of the urban development department. 'I will ask pointed questions, and I expect straight answers,' he told reporters, calling Shinde 'ungrateful and shameless,' and accusing him of betraying the very party that gave him political space and position.

Madiga organisations protest against Karnataka's Congress govt over reservation
Bengaluru: The district units of the Madiga organisations staged a protest against the Congress-led government in Karnataka on Friday at the Freedom Park, demanding immediate implementation of internal reservation. The organisations held protests in front of the offices of all Deputy Commissioners across the state. Speaking on the occasion, former Union Minister and senior BJP leader, A. Narayanaswamy, declared that the Madiga community will no longer wait or bow to false promises. "We will not wait until the next election," he asserted. Narayanaswamy further warned that if the Congress-led government in Karnataka fails to implement internal reservation immediately, Madigas would launch a strong disobedience movement against the government. He stated that protests are being held today (Friday) across all districts of the state, cutting across party lines. 'This is not a BJP-led movement,' he clarified. He questioned whether the Karnataka government values its chair more than the people's issues. 'Is development more important for the government, or is it just holding onto power?' he asked. 'Justice has not been served to the Madigas. Our patience has run out. We can't wait any longer. If we take to the streets, we know how to send you home,' Narayanaswamy warned. He also criticised the Chief Secretary for not holding a meeting when requested to discuss the injustices faced by Madigas since 1976. 'A reservation should not be given based only on population. The injustice faced by our community for over 40 years must be considered. If a higher reservation is not given based on decades of oppression, the Madiga community will be forced to launch an intense agitation,' he warned. He demanded that all past dues be cleared. 'If old promises are not fulfilled, we will organise an intense struggle,' he stated. Narayanswamy noted that protests are being held today in front of the Deputy Commissioners' offices in 26 districts, calling it a reflection of the awakening of the Madiga community. 'We want to remind many MLAs in this state that it would have been impossible for them to win without the Madiga vote,' he said. He criticised elected representatives who had won with Madiga votes but have now fallen silent. 'You don't speak for the Madigas, yet you have the audacity to come and ask for our votes?' he questioned. 'Is there any law in this country that says Madigas should not get reservations?' he asked. 'During Zilla Panchayat and other local body elections, they keep saying 'tomorrow, tomorrow' when it comes to reservation. You had the power to suspend the Constitution and declare an Emergency to retain your position as Prime Minister. But for the Dalit Madigas of this state and country, injustice has continued even after Independence. Many Madiga students are unable to pursue MBBS due to a lack of money. Do you even understand all this?' he questioned the Congress party. Narayanswamy questioned Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's commitment to socialism. 'The CM claims to be a socialist who delivers justice to all. Then what is he the champion of?' he asked. He criticised that not even a single scheme has been given to the backward Madigas in any sector. 'Where is your socialism?' he asked pointedly. He declared that this is not just a disobedience movement — it will become a movement to unseat the government. He thanked everyone who participated in the protest. BJP MLA Basavaraj Mattimadu, BJP state spokesperson H. Venkatesh Dodderi, BJP SC Morcha state vice-president Hoodi Manjunath, community leaders, and office-bearers of various organisations were present.

Oppn seeks answers from EC as65L names dropped from rolls
1 2 Patna: The RJD-led opposition on Friday alleged that the Election Commission (EC) failed to provide satisfactory answers to the queries raised during a meeting held after the release of the draft electoral rolls for the state's 243 assembly constituencies. The EC had convened a meeting with representatives of recognised political parties in Bihar to share copies of the draft rolls and seek their suggestions and feedback. During the meeting, representatives of the INDIA bloc asked the EC to explain the basis on which names had been deleted from the voter list published in Jan this year. RJD spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan said, "The EC had no satisfactory answer about the basis on which it was determined that the people whose names were removed were dead, had moved to another place, were registered in more than one location or whose whereabouts were unknown." Gagan added that the law clearly stipulates that if a voter's name is to be removed from the list, the person must be served a notice. "This procedure was not followed in the case of 65 lakh voters whose names have now been deleted," he said. Opposition leaders also questioned the EC on how many foreign nationals' names and addresses had been detected on the rolls and how many people had been included in the draft list without submitting any of the eleven officially notified documents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors Are Snapping Up This TV Box, We Explain! The opposition delegation submitted a formal list of questions to the EC, seeking clarification on several issues. These included how many voters were informed during the list revision process, the criteria for deleting names of untraceable or deceased voters and a request for access to the 2003 electoral roll for comparative verification.

‘Rummy-in-the-House' row in Maharashtra: Opposition slams NCP minister Manikrao Kokate's shift to sports and youth department
Mumbai/Nagpur: Criticising the BJP-led Mahayuti govt's decision to assign the sports and youth welfare department to NCP MLA Manikrao Kokate over the 'rummy-in-the-House' controversy, the opposition on Friday said govt would now make rummy a state game and advocate for its inclusion in the Olympics. In the wake of growing public outrage over Kokate's conduct and controversial remarks, CM Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday changed his portfolio from agriculture to sports and youth welfare, minority development and Waqf, and NCP minister Dattatray Bharne was given the agriculture portfolio. State Congress president Harshawardhan Sapkal condemned the CM for his failure to sack Kokate from the cabinet. "We were expecting that Fadnavis would sack Kokate, instead he has been promoted and posted as cabinet member for sports and youth welfare. Quite shocking,'' he said, adding that rummy players should now be awarded the Shiv Chhatrapati Awards. The sports department is also important from the perspective of the youth, and while working in this department, he should avoid past mistakes, make proper use of his experience, and do justice to the sports sector. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo " He added: "Similarly, it is expected that Bharane will do justice to the farmers and remove the shadow of controversies that has plagued this department. Any ministerial position is a great responsibility, and if the person in that position does not act responsibly or fails to do justice to the post, the common people bear the brunt. Something similar happened in the case of Kokate, and it was the common farmers who were suffering the consequences, which is why there was a demand for his resignation. " NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule said, "A person [Kokate] who is playing cards in the House, which is called the temple of democracy, should have been asked to resign, but they [BJP] have instead given him a promotion... On one hand, under the Khelo India programme, athletes are working to build their careers, and on the other hand, a leader who plays cards, 'Rummy Rao', has been given this ministry. This is very harmful for Maharashtra ." Kokate, on his part, said, "I am very happy with the new department. I accept the decision taken by the CMs and the deputy CMs. I will continue my journey according to this decision." On Bharne taking over the agriculture portfolio, Kokate said: "Bharne is a farmer's son. He is also a knowledgeable farmer, and this account has been entrusted to him. Therefore, this account will definitely get justice. If he asks me for any help, I will help him 100%." Fadnavis on Friday said the decision to assign sports and youth welfare, minority development and waqf portfolio to Kokate was taken jointly after a discussion with deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. He termed it a move to uphold accountability in governance. Kokate was shifted in the wake of growing public outrage over his conduct and controversial remarks. "There was a lot of public anger. We discussed it together and decided to reassign the agriculture department to Dattatraya Bharne," Fadnavis told the media on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new international campus of Kavi Kulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University at Waranga. "No other portfolios have been changed, and as of now, no such changes are being considered." Dispelling speculation over his meeting with former NCP minister Dhananjay Munde, Fadnavis clarified there were no discussions related to any cabinet changes during a meeting between them. "Such decisions are not taken at Munde's level. They happen between me, Shinde, and Pawar," he said. Fadnavis reiterated stern warning to all ministers against inviting public ire, stating, "I, Shinde, and Pawar have made it clear that irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated. The decision to remove Kokate is a signal — we are here for public service, and our words and actions must reflect that." Ajit Pawar too cautioned NCP workers against misconduct, including public disturbances and celebratory firing, saying such actions tarnish the reputation of both the individual and the party. His remarks come in the wake of two recent controversies linked to NCP members, which included an incident in Pune district where the brother of an NCP MLA allegedly fired a gun at a "tamasha" venue in Daund. "Do not go to Chaufula and do not open fire in the air. Such acts not only bring disrepute to the individual but also to the party," he told party functionaries at a gathering in Pune. Chaufula is a village on the Pune-Solapur Road in Daund tehsil, known for its folk art centres showcasing lavani and tamasha performances. Kokate has been mired in controversy — first when a camera caught him allegedly playing an online card game during the recently concluded monsoon session of Maharashtra Legislature, and more recently, for his inflammatory statements about farmers and govt schemes. He denied the gaming allegation, claiming he was trying to close a pop-up ad, and even offered to resign if proven guilty. However, it was his remarks comparing govt with beggars in reference to the Re 1 crop insurance scheme that appear to have sealed his fate for showing the govt in poor light. "The govt takes Re 1 from farmers. But it does not give a single rupee to the farmers. The govt takes money. So who is the beggar? The govt is the beggar, not the farmers," he had said. In previous statements, Kokate also alleged that farmers used govt funds for weddings and not agriculture, and that "2% to 4% corruption" in schemes was not a reason to shut them down. In Feb, he and his brother Sunil Kokate were sentenced to two years jail by a Nashik court for submitting fake documents to obtain flats under a govt quota in the 1990s.
