Conte explains what angered him at Tottenham - 'Do not celebrate these things'

Daily Mirror4 hours ago

Former Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has reflected on his time in charge of the club and the Napoli boss has detailed one moment in particular which shocked him
Antonio Conte has opened up about his time in charge of Tottenham and taken a dig at the club for celebrating for a top-four finish. Conte joined Spurs in November 2021 after Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked and they went on to finish fourth that season.
Spurs finished two points ahead of fierce rivals Arsenal after beating them 3-0 in a North London derby clash with just two games left to play. As a result, Tottenham qualified for the Champions League and Arsenal ended up in the Europa League.

And Conte was left shocked by the way his side celebrated finishing fourth, claiming that "going to the Champions League was like winning the Premier League". Reflecting on his time at Spurs, Conte told Sky Italia: "It was a difficult year at Tottenham.

"I arrived in November with them ninth in the standings and we ended up in the Champions League, overtaking Arsenal… For them, going to the Champions League was like winning the Premier League.
"On the last day, the Champions League entry was celebrated in the dressing room. I called my staff and told them: we don't get used to these celebrations.
"You don't celebrate these things. We are used to celebrating other things. OK, great feat, but at the same time, we understand what kind of celebration it is."
Conte was axed the following season after publicly criticising the club and questioning his squad's mentality following a 3-3 draw with Southampton where Spurs blew a 3-1 lead. "Why is it happening? Because they are used to it here, they are used to it," he fumed.
"They don't play for something important yeah. They don't want to play under pressure, they don't want to play under stress. It is easy in this way.

"Tottenham's story is this. 20 years there is the owner and they never won something but why The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stay here. I have seen the managers that Tottenham had on the bench.
"You risk to disrupt the figure of the manager and to protect the other situation in every moment. Until now I try to hide the situation but now no because I repeat I don't want to see what I have seen today because this is unacceptable and also unacceptable for the fans.
"They follow us, pay the ticket and to see the team another time to have this type of performance is unacceptable. We have to think a lot about this."

Man United target Mbeumo speaks out on Thomas Frank's departure

Bryan Mbeumo has publicly addressed transfer speculation linking him to Manchester United and Tottenham after a season where he scored 20 goals for Brentford. Manchester United's initial offer of £45m plus £10m in add-ons was rejected, while Tottenham has intensified their pursuit following the appointment of ex-Brentford boss Thomas Frank. The 25-year-old praised Thomas Frank's impact on his development as both a player and a person, highlighting Frank's tactical intelligence and ability to build a strong team dynamic. The forward acknowledged the transfer speculation as part of football life, reflecting on his best Premier League season and Brentford's near miss in chasing a European spot. Manchester United are reportedly preparing a second bid for Mbeumo, while Tottenham hopes Frank's presence and Champions League football will give them an advantage.

Real Betis ‘make offer to buy Antony from Man Utd in rarely seen £17m co-ownership transfer'

Chiefs have already flown in for talks in neutral city TIS THE SEASON Real Betis 'make offer to buy Antony from Man Utd in rarely seen £17m co-ownership transfer' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) REAL BETIS have reportedly made an offer to buy Antony from Manchester United in a rare £17million co-ownership transfer. The Brazilian winger was shipped out on loan to Spain in January after failing to impress Ruben Amorim. 2 Real Betis are looking to sign Antony on the cheap in a rarely-seen deal Credit: Getty Antony looked a different player under Manuel Pellegrini as his five goals and two assists helped Betis qualify for the Europa League. He even picked up a silver medal after finishing as a runner-up to Chelsea in the Conference League final. But Antony is now back at United after his Betis loan came to an end. The former Ajax man cost £86m to sign in 2022 but has struggled for form and is expected to depart United once again. Antony has been linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen for another reunion with Erik ten Hag. But Betis are hopeful of bringing him back to Spain. And ABC Sevilla claims club chiefs travelled to England for talks with United last week. It's reckoned that Betis proposed a rarely-seen deal that would see them pay just £17m to become theoretical co-owners of Antony. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS Outright co-ownership is common in European football but is banned in the Premier League. So in practice, it would see Antony join Betis for a low figure, while leaving United entitled to a high sell-on clause potentially worth 50 per cent. 'Bring him back' - Antony needs another chance at Man Utd under Ruben Amorim, says club legend 2 It's claimed that Betis chiefs are now confident of striking a deal, but the Red Devils are insisting on a higher fee up front. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made no secret of his desire to raise funds for new transfers. And accepting just £17m would see United make a staggering £69m loss on a player signed just three years ago. Yet Betis hope the lure of a 50 per cent sell-on clause will turn the deal in their favour and could even be prepared to up the initial fee slightly.

Man Utd's £51m transfer target responds to rumours he could replace Andre Onana

Kaua Santos has distanced himself from rumours that he could be set for a move to Manchester United, insisting he remains 'entirely focused' on Eintracht Frankfurt. The young goalkeeper left Flamengo's academy to join Eintracht in 2023 and went on to make his first senior appearance for the Bundesliga outfit in a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg last September. But Santos suffered a cruciate ligament tear in Eintracht's Europa League quarter-final second leg defeat to Tottenham and the serious knee injury brought the 22-year-old's promising debut season to a premature end. Now on the long road to recovery, the highly rated Brazilian is not expected to return to action until autumn at the earliest. Despite sitting on the sidelines for the past two months, Santos has remained in the spotlight, with some of Europe's elite clubs said to be plotting moves for the former Flamengo shot-stopper. Old Trafford has been mooted as a possible destination for Santos after United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, met with Eintracht's chief Markus Krosche in April to discuss a proposed £51million deal. The Red Devils are believed to have identified Santos as a potential target on the back of another unconvincing campaign for Ruben Amorim's error-prone number one Andre Onana. But when quizzed on United's interest in a wide-ranging interview with German newspaper Die Welt, Santos stressed that he was not even thinking about leaving Eintracht. 'The management at Eintracht Frankfurt have shown tremendous confidence in me,' Santos said. 'They wanted to continue working with me before these rumours even surfaced. 'They still have a lot of faith in me here, so it was clear to me that I decided to extend my contract [last October]. 'I want to establish myself as a goalkeeper, perform well and achieve as much as possible.' Asked if he had ambitions to lift major trophies with Eintracht, Santos replied: 'Of course. If I compete, I want to win. 'The club has shown repeatedly with the DFB Cup and Europa League victories, as well as with our Champions League qualification, that great things are possible here. 'I want to help repeat such successes.' United are not alone in tracking Santos' progress, with Bayern Munich reportedly eyeing the youngster as a possible long-term successor for Manuel Neuer. On these rumours, Santos said: 'Manuel is a role model for every goalkeeper. 'Every goalkeeper who comes along now has learned from him. 'I'm not busy with anything else at the moment because my entire focus is on Eintracht Frankfurt.' Santos picked out fellow countrymen, Alisson Becker and Ederson, as his two greatest inspirations in the modern game. More Trending 'I especially look up to my two compatriots Alisson Becker and Ederson,' he explained. 'They're among the best goalkeepers in the world and I watch a lot of videos of both of them. 'With Alisson, I pay particular attention to his positioning and his behaviour in one-on-one duels with the strikers. I've improved a lot in that area since then. 'Ederson is world-class on the ball. That's why I've been watching how precisely he holds his foot when passing and the decisions he makes.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
