Cristie Kerr, 47, wins for the first time in eight years at LPGA Legends Championship
Cristie Kerr hoisted a trophy for the first time in eight years this weekend at the LPGA Legends Championship. The two-time major winner and former No. 1 celebrated in style on husband Erik Stevens' 60th birthday.
'It's been a long time since I won a tournament, and it's never easy to win on any tour. To have my friends and family here, and to be able to get my first win in front of my youngest son, Griffin … I'll take it to the grave,' said Kerr, who won 20 times on the LPGA. 'It is just so special. My other friends and family that spent the entire week of their time with us to come out and support, it was really worth it. It was amazing.'
Kerr's closing 70 at the Copper Rock Golf Course in Hurricane, Utah, put her at 6 under for the tournament and two strokes clear of the field. Former LPGA player Moira Dunn-Bohls finished second while Maria McBride placed solo third at 3 under. Last year, Kerr finished runner-up to Angela Stanford at the LPGA Legends Championship, three back.
Kerr, 47, recently played on the Epson Tour close to home in Scottsdale and finished 10th with her husband on the bag. She also played in the LPGA's Arizona stop – the Ford Championship – this spring, where she missed the cut.
'I don't play full-time on tour anymore," said Kerr, "and I said if I wanted to have a chance here and also at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, that I needed to get more reps and made myself do it. Got a top 10 at the Carlisle Arizona Women's Golf Classic in Scottsdale, where I live, with my husband on the bag, so it's been a pretty good couple of weeks.'

Japanese rookie Akie Iwai fired a eight-under par 64 to seize a two-stroke lead after Saturday's third round of the LPGA Portland Classic. The 23-year-old from Saitama, seeking her first LPGA victory, made seven birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey to stand on 18-under 198 after 54 holes at Edgewater Country Club. Australia's Grace Kim, who captured her first major title at the Evian Championship, made a stunning eagle at the 17th, holing out from 156 yards from the fairway rough to shoot 67 and grab second on 200. World number 29 Iwai, an LPGA runner-up this year at Thailand and the LA Championship, has won six times on the Japan Tour. "After I made the eagle at five, I had many birdie chances, so good tempo," Iwai said. "My style is aggressive. No change this week. Aim to the pin. Every shot. Every hole."
