The TopBrand 2025 'Top 500 Global Brands list' has been released, with Microsoft ranking first.
SHENZHEN, China, Aug. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The 19th China Brand Festival has been successfully held in Shenzhen from August 7–11, 2025. This year's theme is "AI and Global Expansion." A total of 10,000 guests have been gathered in the city of innovation to participate in parallel forums, the Brand Expo, the Entrepreneurs' Sports Games, Brand Leaders Face-to-Face sessions, and other events. More than 2,000 people attended the opening ceremony. During the event, the TopBrand Union released the TopBrand 2025 "Top 500 Global Brands list", now in its fourth year. Microsoft ranked first with a brand value of USD 1,062.505 billion, followed by NVIDIA in second place with USD 1,046.760 billion, and Apple in third with USD 997.685 billion. Amazon, Alphabet (Google), Saudi Aramco, Walmart, Meta (Facebook), Berkshire Hathaway, and Broadcom ranked fourth to tenth, respectively. PetroChina ranked 14th, making it the highest-valued Chinese brand. Dr. Wang Yong, Chairman of TopBrand Union and President of the China Brand Festival, noted that in the recently released "Fortune 2025 Global 500 list", China had 130 companies on the list, just eight fewer than the United States. However, in this TopBrand 2025 "Top 500 Global Brands" ranking, the number of Chinese companies is less than half that of the United States. This shows there is still a significant gap between the brand influence of Chinese companies and their economic strength, and much work remains to be done. China Unveils Mini SSDs That Fit Like SIM Cards, Debut in Strix Halo Gaming Devices
China is introducing a storage breakthrough that could reshape how we think about portable device memory. Chinese storage manufacturer Biwin has revealed its 'Mini SSD'—also known as the '1517'—a storage device so compact that it inserts just like a smartphone SIM card. Measuring only 15mm x 17mm x 1.4mm, it's smaller than a U.S. penny and only slightly larger than a MicroSD card, yet it delivers the kind of performance typically reserved for larger, enclosed drives. The Mini SSD promises sequential read speeds of up to 3,700MB/s and write speeds of 3,400MB/s via a PCIe 4x2 connection. Capacities include 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. For comparison, even the latest MicroSD Express cards—compatible with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2—max out at a theoretical 985MB/s. While a full-size SD Express card could narrowly beat Biwin's Mini SSD in speed, it's nearly double the size. Designed with versatility in mind, the Mini SSD will feature a dedicated slot similar to SIM card trays—just insert a pin to pop it out. It's aimed at laptops, tablets, smartphones, cameras, and more, and boasts IP68 water and dust resistance along with the ability to survive drops from up to three meters. The first devices to feature this innovation are already confirmed. Two Strix Halo-powered gaming portables—revealed at ChinaJoy—will debut with Mini SSD support. The GPD Win 5, known for its huge battery backpack, will house the SSD in a dedicated slot, as shown in demonstration videos. The OneNetbook OneXPlayer Super X, a hybrid laptop-tablet with the same Strix Halo chip, will also ship with a 'card slot' for the new storage format. It remains unclear if Biwin's Mini SSD will become a universal standard that other manufacturers can adopt. Pricing and global availability details are yet to be announced, and no retail listings have surfaced. However, with its combination of extreme portability, impressive speed, and durability, this innovation could redefine how storage is integrated into next-generation portable gaming and computing devices. If the technology gains traction, the days of bulky storage upgrades for handhelds, tablets, and ultralight laptops might soon be behind us. For now, all eyes are on the upcoming Strix Halo devices to see the Mini SSD in action.

Chinese state media calls U.S. a 'surveillance empire' over trackers in chip shipments
The United States' practice of installing location trackers in chip shipments at risk of diversion to China reflects the "instincts of a surveillance empire," China's state-run media outlet Xinhua said in a commentary published on Friday. Reuters reported earlier this week that U.S. authorities had secretly placed location tracking devices in targeted shipments of advanced chips to detect diversions to China, which is under U.S. curbs for advanced chip exports. The Xinhua commentary, titled "America turns chip trade into a surveillance game," cited "reports" that Washington had embedded such trackers, accusing the United States of running "the world's most sprawling intelligence apparatus". The U.S. government has in the past few years tightened restrictions on the exports of advanced chips as well as related technology and equipments to China, as the two superpowers vie for technological dominance. The Chinese commentary follows longstanding accusations from Washington and its Western allies that China could use some exported products, from telecommunications equipment to vehicles, for surveillance, posing potential security risks. In 2022, the Biden administration banned the sale and import of new telecommunications equipment from several Chinese firms, including Huawei, citing national security concerns. In January, it intensified scrutiny by targeting China-made cars and trucks. In its commentary, Xinhua accused the U.S. government of seeing its trading partners as "rivals to be tripped up or taken down," adding that "if U.S. chips are seen as Trojan horses for surveillance, customers will look elsewhere." China's cyberspace watchdog last month said it had asked U.S. chipmaker Nvidia to explain whether its H20 chips had any backdoor security risks; a hidden method of bypassing normal authentication or security controls. Chinese authorities have also cautioned domestic tech firms over their use of H20 chips, Reuters recently reported.
