Why MLB All-Star swing-off is a bad idea for regular season games

USA Today16-07-2025
The home run swing-off that ended the 2025 MLB All-Star Game — an exhibition event — was a terrific idea. It was an inspired way to inject some excitement and keep players from hanging around an otherwise meaningless game for far too long. MLB should really make it a mainstay and stay in the creative thought process that brought it about.
But not if it extends to actual games that matter. And, well, about that. MLB All-Stars seemed to love the swing-off a bit too much.
According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, players who participated in/witnessed Tuesday night's landmark swing-off might be seriously entertaining the idea of trying to extend it to the regular season. To put it lightly, that's an absolutely horrible idea:
[Logan] Webb checked his phone afterward and opened a group text he maintains with other players around the league. Their consensus: We should never play an extra-inning game again. We should always end games just like that.
New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said the same thing, seemingly willing to banish the automatic runner on second base forever.
The players were joking. We think.
It's one thing to have a short home run derby when there are no stakes. That's why it's fun. You get to watch the best baseball players in the world mash dingers, which is the coolest part of the sport. Again. Who doesn't want that? It's another thing entirely to default to it, right away, for every game that counts in the standings. That would be way too much. It would cheapen the harmless spectacle of it all. It would make the swing-off akin to the NHL's shootout, which has lost its luster as a de facto skills competition that ultimately weighs too much into the outcome of the hockey season.
I understand why players would entertain the idea on an expanded level. They're probably tired of those extra-innings games that feel like they will never end when they often have a game the next night and have to do it 162 times over the course of six months.
I get why that would be irritating. I do.
But maybe we could find a happy middle instead? Perhaps, instead of immediately defaulting to a swing-off with a tie after the ninth inning, maybe MLB allows for two extra innings of regular play. Then, if the game is still tied, that's when you have the swing-off. That feels like a reasonable compromise for everyone involved, players and fans alike. It would still allow for normal decisions without keeping players around into the wee hours of the night.
Of course, we could also allow ties into the picture! That would make so much sense! Most sports understand this is the best way to deal with long games in a long regular season. Oh, right, American sports fans tend to hiss at the mere idea of ties like an angry house cat that you walked past way too fast.
Never mind. I forgot. That's on me.
So, yeah. I'm open to the idea of extra-inning swing-offs in the regular season. But let's still play some actual baseball first before we pivot to the last resort. Please?

Citron scores 28 and Iriafen has 22, both career bests, to lift Mystics past Sky 103-86

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sonia Citron scored 28 points and Kiki Iriafen added 22, career highs for both, and the Washington Mystics handed the Chicago Sky their sixth straight loss with a 103-86 victory on Tuesday night. Brittney Sykes supported the two All-Star rookies with 18 points for the Mystics (13-13) and the reserves outscored their counterparts 21-7. Iriafen also had 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double. Angel Reese, who missed the previous two games with back issues, had 22 points and 13 rebounds. Kamilla Cardoso had 21 points and 10 boards for the Sky (7-19). Rachel Banham added 19 points. Washington led by 19 points in the third quarter and was ahead 80-65 entering the fourth. The Sky cut the deficit to eight with 3:22 to play, but Jade Melbourne and Citron sandwiched three-point plays around Iriafen's basket to make it 100-84. Washington shot 51% with 10 3-pointers. Citron scored the last seven Washington points in the first quarter, giving her 12 points and the Mystics 30-27 lead. Sykes scored twice inside and Lucy Olsen's 3 capped a 9-2 run for a 39-21 lead, the biggest of the half. Chicago got back within one but the Mystics surged ahead again and led 55-47 at the break. Washington shot 59%, 6 of 13 from long range with 16 assists on 20 baskets. ___ AP WNBA:

A rare first for Ohtani: Dodgers superstar strikes out in his first 4 plate appearances

CINCINNATI (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani had another first in his MLB career. Ohtani struck out in his first four plate appearances Tuesday night against the Cincinnati Reds, the first time he has done that in his eight seasons in the majors. It is the sixth time the Japanese superstar and reigning NL MVP has struck out four times in a game. It is the second time this season, with the other coming against San Diego on June 17. Against the Seattle Mariners on July 17, 2021, while playing for the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani popped up to the shortstop in his first at-bat and then struck out in his next four times at the plate. Cincinnati's Nick Lodolo became the 13th pitcher to strike out Ohtani three times in a game. The Reds left-hander got Ohtani to chase a curveball out of the strike zone in the first and fifth innings, and got him looking on a 94.6 mph fastball in the third. Graham Ashcraft then whiffed Ohtani on an inside slider in the seventh. Ohtani was one strike away from his first five strikeout game before he flew out to right field on a 2-2 count in the ninth inning of a 4-4 game. Ohtani came into the game on a nine-game hitting streak along with leading the majors with 100 runs scored. He is atop the NL in slugging (.620), total bases (254), OPS (1.001) and 38 home runs. ___ AP MLB: Joe Reedy, The Associated Press

Yankees come back to beat Rays 7-5 behind Bellinger, Volpe and Fried

NEW YORK (AP) — Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer, Anthony Volpe also went deep and the New York Yankees erased an early deficit Tuesday night in a 7-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Max Fried recovered from a rough start and threw a career-high 111 pitches in 6 2/3 innings. Volpe delivered a tiebreaking single in the fourth and launched a 452-foot homer to center field in the eighth, the longest of his career. He also committed two throwing errors at shortstop, the second one on a play that should have ended the game. That gave Tampa Bay another chance before Devin Williams whiffed All-Star Jonathan Aranda with runners at second and third for the final out. New York pulled within four games of first-place Toronto in the AL East after falling 6 1/2 back last weekend. Fried (12-4) allowed four runs — two earned — and four hits while surpassing his previous career high of 110 pitches for Atlanta at Philadelphia in September 2022. ___ AP MLB:
