Results of BEST credit society polls today; first test for alliance of Thackeray cousins

Polling for the BEST Employees' Co-operative Credit Society elections concluded on Monday and counting of votes are scheduled for Tuesday. The election drew unusual political attention as it marked the first joint contest by Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The two parties, contesting under the 'Utkarsh' panel, have fielded candidates for all 21 seats—18 from the Sena (UBT), two from the MNS, and one from the SC/ST Employees' Welfare Association. Their main challenger is a panel backed by the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, who currently control the state government. The election is widely seen as a litmus test for the Thackeray cousins' renewed alliance, ahead of a series of municipal and local body polls due in Maharashtra in the upcoming months. Even as leaders of both parties have admitted that the MNS does not have a strong presence within the BEST undertaking, the alliance provides a platform for coordination and a trial run before larger electoral battles. The polls were held under the shadow of government scrutiny into the functioning of the credit society over alleged irregularities. The Sena (UBT)–MNS front has termed the inquiries as 'politically motivated pressure tactics'. The BEST credit society has been under the control of undivided Sena in the past and Sena UBT since the past a couple of years after the split in the Sena. Adding to the controversy, MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande on Monday alleged that rival groups were distributing cash to influence the outcome. In a video shared on X, Deshpande claimed that a member of the credit society received a pamphlet with an envelope containing two Rs 500 notes. 'This game is to buy votes,' he alleged, while adding that a formal complaint would be lodged with the election officer. Despite these charges, polling was reported to be largely smooth. The BEST credit society is significant as its members are employees of the civic transport and power utility, and the cooperative's influence extends into Mumbai's political and civic spheres.

Sitakund Chandranath Dham to Maheshkhali temple: Pakistan's ISI and anti-India Yunus are targeting Hindu temples of Bangladesh due to...

Muhammad Yunus- File image Dhaka: After the Muhammad Yunus led government came into power in Bangladesh, the situation of minorities has deteriorated and in the recent case, it has been reported that the anti-India government of Bangladesh under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus is targeting famous Hindu temples of Bangladesh. As per media reports, Pakistan's ISI is gaining a free hand to expand its operations and in the recent plan, the targets are the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Bangladesh. Why is Pakistan's ISI fueling religious fundamentalism in Bangladesh? According to a report by Bangladeshi journalist Salahuddin Shoaib Chowdhury, Pakistan's ISI is fueling religious fundamentalism in Bangladesh, targeting Hindu temples through Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives, and using Bangladesh as a testing ground for extremist activities. Which Hindu temples are ISI attacking in Bangladesh? As per the local report, Hindu temples in Bangladesh are being continuously targeted in recent times. In a matter of concern for the Hindus of Bangladesh, extremist organizations linked to Pakistan and terrorist groups are attempting attacks and occupations of temples. The recent report mentions that Hindu temples, specifically the Medhas Muni Ashram in Chittagong, the Golden Temple in Bandarban district and the Adinath Temple in Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar. Why India should be worried about Bangladesh? All these ancient religious sites are connected not only to Hindus but also to the faith of the entire South Asia. The purpose of attacks on temples is to intimidate Hindus and insult their religious traditions, which is increasing tension in society. Thus, it can be said that Bangladesh is becoming a launchpad for radical Islamic and terrorist forces under the role of Yunus government in Bangladesh and this is the reason why India should be worried.

The Veep Election: BJP's Tamil Nadu Pick, INDIA Bloc's Response, The Numbers

New Delhi: The 'battle' to replace Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice President of India won't be much of a contest given the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance has the votes (with nearly three dozen to spare) to ensure its nominee - Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan - carries the day. Between the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the BJP has 422 MPs, including those from NDA members, and can count on support from non-aligned partners, including ex-Andhra Chief Minister Jagan Reddy's YSR Congress Party. Mr Radhakrisnan and the BJP need only 394 votes to win. The opposition, i.e., the Congress-led INDIA bloc, will still name a candidate, of course, with DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva on the shortlist, as is ex-ISRO scientist Mylswami Annadurai. But if there is little chance an opposition candidate can win, then why bother with an election? The opposition has said it will field a candidate to underscore democratic principles and unity within its ranks ahead of crucial elections in Bihar later this year and in Tamil Nadu, Bengal, and Assam in 2026. READ | India Bloc Meet On To Discuss Joint Vice President Candidate Also, the INDIA bloc knows it needs to respond to the BJP selecting a Tamil Nadu politician as a Vice President candidate. Sources told NDTV picking Mr Radhakrishnan - a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu - was meant to allow the party to corner the state's ruling DMK into either supporting its pick (and breaking rank with the Congress and its INDIA bloc allies) or risk being bashed as 'anti-Tamil'. Publicly the DMK has pooh-pooed any notion that selecting a Vice President from its state makes the BJP pro-Tamil. Privately, sources said, the party has urged INDIA allies to counter Mr Radhakrishnan with a Tamil face of its own. The Congress has reportedly agreed to this tactic. To that end, earlier today there were rumours that Tiruchi Siva, a five-time parliamentarian, would be selected to stand against Mr Radhakrishnan. But a sticking point soon emerged. READ | BJP Veep Pick Will Cause Cracks In Opposition Bloc? It Depends On... Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool - which refused to back the Congress' Margaret Alva in the 2022 Veep election, because it wanted a non-political face - has made a similar demand. Three years ago, refusing to give in, the Trinamool abstained, and Mr Dhankhar romped to an outsized win. This time around, aware it needs all the votes it can get, the INDIA bloc is likely to be more open to the Trinamool's demands, which may be why Mr Annadurai, a scientist, is on the shortlist. For the BJP, nominating Mr Radhakrishnan works on multiple levels. It sets up possible rifts between the DMK and the rest of the INDIA bloc if a Tamil face is not chosen, or between the Trinamool and the rest of the bloc if a non-political face is chosen. Either way the BJP has the numbers to make Mr Radhakrishnan - whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised as someone who "distinguished himself with his dedication, humility and intellect" - the third Vice President (and second with that surname) from Tamil Nadu.
