Sian Welby's 'uncontrollable tiredness' caused by common car feature
Sian Welby thought something might have been wrong when she came down with 'uncontrollable tiredness' whilst driving. But she never expected her car to be the culprit.
Offering advice to "anyone who drives", Sian shared her discovery with listeners to the Capital Breakfast radio show she hosts alongside Jordan North and Chris Stark. The 38-year-old star said it was only a chance scroll on TikTok that helped her pinpoint the problem that was instantly solved by disabling the feature most modern cars have.
In a clip to her Instagram feed with its 274,000 followers, Sian wrote: "We had lorry drivers and taxi drivers texting in saying the button had been on in their cab the whole time and they never noticed it! So dangerous and most of us don't know about it!"
She told her co-hosts that she "thought she had a bit of an issue" with car journeys that lasted over 30 minutes, especially if they involved a motorway. She said: "I didn't know if it was sort of the rhythmic motion of the car on motorways or the mundane view you've got of constant tarmac, but it would 'send me to sleep' - and I'm talking uncontrollable tiredness.
"I started thinking 'what is wrong with me?'. Even if I had a good night's sleep, I'd be pinning my eyes open on these long journeys."
The radio host, who also occasionally presents ITV's This Morning, mentioned how it's often impossible to drive with windows down on a motorway without having a "horrendous" noise in your ear. The most obvious solution for a cool and fresh breeze is the air conditioner (if your car has it).
Sian added that a random scroll on TikTok brought her to a video which claimed watching it "could save your life". She initially thought it was going to be "a load of nonsense" but it ended up giving her the solution to all her problems on the road.
She continued: "When you've got air conditioning in your car, you've got two buttons, and there's one that shows a car with arrows—the recirculation button. A lot of us were told that it would save energy if you put that on because it recycles the air inside your car and it cools down quicker - that's true.
"However, apparently, it's not designed to be left on and it can cause drowsiness. So I thought, right, this could be a load of nonsense but if I get into my car and that button is on, it might be why I'm getting tired.
"I go in my car and, sure enough, that button is on. I turned it off and I did a three-hour motorway journey the other day - didn't feel tired once."
It's not just mind over matter - there's a scientific reason why people should limit how often they use the recirculation button. Studies show that recirculated air inside a car contains decreased oxygen levels and increased carbon dioxide levels.
The air conditioning recirculation button should ideally be used in short bursts, typically for no more than 20 minutes. Some vehicles may have a built-in timer that automatically switches off recirculation after a set time to allow fresh air into the cabin.

"One of my sisters, in Spain, that was her first race outside of Australia, and that was a good weekend. "Now my grandfather the same, so maybe I need to get my family members one by one for the rest of the races. I didn't know. It seemed like the best person to dedicate it to. It's a nice thing to do." Piastri also referenced what he had written on the champagne bottle with a post on social media, sharing some of his highlights from the Belgian GP weekend. "Hoping grandad comes to more races," he wrote in the carousel post on Instagram. Piastri had been on pole a day earlier for the Sprint race, but lost out to Max Verstappen. The Dutchman took advantage of the long flat-out section after the first corner which gave him a slipstream and the opportunity to fly past the McLaren, and stay there. Having experienced that a day earlier, he knew his best chance in the main Grand Prix was to do the same thing to Norris. And that's exactly what he managed, explaining: "I knew it was going to help me pretty significantly if I did it. "I had a good run out of turn one and then tried to be as brave as I could through Eau Rouge and was able to stay pretty close. After that, the slipstream did the rest for me. I knew that was going to be pretty important for trying to win the race today."

Christian Horner reveals his plans for first F1 race since Red Bull axe
Red Bull axed Christian Horner after 20 years as team principal and chief executive of the F1 team last week, meaning the Belgian Grand Prix is the first event he has missed in 406 races Axed Formula 1 team boss Christian Horner took to social media to show fans what he was up to on the first race Sunday since he was dismissed. A tongue-in-cheek post on his Instagram story showed the 51-year-old was not just sitting around watching the F1 action. Horner was in charge of Red Bull Racing for 20 years, having taken over before the team's debut on the grid in 2005. And he famously never failed to travel for a single race during that period, but is not at Spa-Francorchamps for this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix. For the first time in 406 F1 races, Horner has had to make alternative plans. A lover of horses as well as motor racing, he decided to explore his other passion having had the leadership of the Red Bull team taken away from him without warning. A video posted on his account shows Horner riding a horse along a country lane, and then an image of him posing atop his steed in front of a barn. He poked fun at his situation with a light-hearted caption, which read: "Different horse power this Sunday." Horner was replaced at Red Bull by Laurent Mekies, who stepped up from his previous role as team principal at sister squad Racing Bulls. The Frenchman got off to an ideal start on Saturday as Max Verstappen won the Sprint race in Belgium. While he holds both the team principal and chief executive titles, Mekies will have much less power than Horner previously did at the team. Adviser Helmut Marko confirmed as much when he said: "We were able to bring Laurent Mekies into the family. His responsibilities will be significantly reduced, with the main focus being on racing." Mekies knows that his first big job as Red Bull Racing boss is to ensure that the team keeps hold of its star driver for as long as possible. Intense speculation has suggested Verstappen could quit for rivals Mercedes by exercising a release clause in his current contract, which expires in 2028. It is understood that Verstappen is likely to stick with Red Bull for now, rather than leave ahead of the 2026 season. But Mekies is fully aware that the Dutchman is likely to go wherever the quickest car available is so he can add to his four F1 titles so far. "I'm sure Max wants a fast car and if we get him a fast car, I'm sure it's cancelling out all the other considerations," he said in his first press conference as Red Bull boss at Spa-Francorchamps on Friday. "So really the focus is very much to try to get to know the team as quickly as possible in order to see how we can support, how we can build the next step of competitiveness in order to get a fast car and hence to make it an easy call for Max."
