Arab News2 days ago
RIYADH: The Baha branch of the Ministry of Sports, together with the Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation, organized a hiking program as part of the 'Color Your Summer with Sports' campaign.
The event was held in cooperation with the region's municipality and health cluster as part of the Baha Summer Season, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.
Bandar Al-Ghamdi, director of the ministry's branch in Baha, said the program included 120 people. The event took place in natural locations that reflect the region's landscape, he added.
Baha's mountains, valleys and dams offer suitable areas for various sports, including mountain and water activities, he said. These features support the region's role in sports tourism in the Kingdom.
Al-Ghamdi added that the program is part of a plan to develop the sports sector in Baha and build partnerships with sports federations.
The initiative aims to support the local economy and attract sports and tourism visitors, from the Kingdom and beyond, Al-Ghamdi said.

Kwan Drives in Go-Ahead Run in 10th, Makes Sliding Catch in Bottom Half as Guardians Beat White Sox

Steven Kwan knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and made a sliding catch to help prevent a run from scoring in the bottom of the inning as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5 on Sunday. Kwan's fly off Brandon Eisert (2-2) scored automatic runner Angel Martínez. Kwan covered a lot of ground in left field and made a catch just inside the foul line on a fly ball by Mike Tauchman leading off the 10th. Kyle Manzardo hit his 15th homer–a three-run shot off Aaron Civale, the player he was traded for in June–to cap a four-run sixth and give Cleveland a 4-3 lead. Brayan Rocchio doubled with one out and scored on a force out by José Ramírez for the first run. Austin Slater hit his fourth home run, a leadoff shot off Joey Cantillo in the fourth, to put the White Sox ahead 1-0. Michael A. Taylor's sac fly and Slater's RBI single extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Andrew Benintendi hit his 11th home run, a solo shot off Cantillo, to tie it at 4 in the sixth. Kwan drew a walk in the eighth off Grant Taylor, took third on a single by Nolan Jones, and scored on Ramírez's sac fly for a 5-4 lead. Edgar Quero doubled in the eighth, and pinch-runner Will Robertson scored on Luis Robert Jr.'s two-out double to tie it 5-all. Cantillo allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. Closer Emmanuel Clase (5-2) didn't allow a hit in the final two innings as Cleveland won three of four in the series. Key moment: Civale allowed only a bunt single by Rocchio through the first five innings before two hits and two walks led to the four-run sixth. Key stat: The all-time series between the AL Central rivals is even at 1130-1130 with 17 ties. Up next: After the All-Star break, the Guardians host the Athletics, and Chicago is at Pittsburgh, both on Friday.

Saudi Arabia tops global ranking in intl tourism revenues growth during Q1 2025

Saudi Arabia has ranked first as the top tourist destination globally in terms of growth in international tourism revenues during the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period in 2019, according to the UN Tourism Barometer Report published in May 2025 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization. According to the report, Saudi Arabia ranked third globally in terms of the growth in the number of international tourists during Q1 2025 compared to Q1 2019. It also ranked second in the Middle East for the same period. The Kingdom recorded a 102% growth in the number of international tourists during Q1 2025 compared to the same period in 2019, far surpassing the global average growth rate of 3% and the Middle East's average growth of 44%, further strengthening its global and regional leadership in the tourism sector. For his part, Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al Khateeb stated on social networking platform 'X' that this achievement reflects Saudi Arabia's advancing position in the tourism sector, backed by its leadership. This came thanks to working with a teamwork spirit to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, said the minister, expressing optimism for further growth and enhanced positioning for the Kingdom on the global tourism map. According to data available with Argaam, the Ministry of Tourism revealed earlier that Saudi Arabia achieved a record surplus from travel in its balance of payments during Q1 2025, reaching nearly SAR 26.8 billion, driven by spending from incoming international visitors. Spending by inbound visitors to Saudi Arabia during Q1 2025 reached SAR 49.4 billion, a growth of about 10% year-on-year.

Oman tourism revenues hit $5.5bn in 2024

JEDDAH: Oman's tourism sector contributed over 2.12 billion rials ($5.51 billion) to the Gulf country's national economy in 2024, up from 1.75 billion rials in 2018, according to official data. The latest figures from the National Center for Statistics and Information indicate that this increase reflects a compound annual growth rate of 3.2 percent, reinforcing the industry's role as a key pillar in the sultanate's economic diversification strategy. The sector's contribution to gross domestic product also rose to 2.7 billion rials, up from 2.3 billion rials in 2018, underscoring tourism's expanding macroeconomic impact, according to the Oman News Agency. European travelers significantly boosted Oman's tourism sector in 2024, driving a 10.2 percent rise in hotel revenues during the first five months of the year, according to NCSI data released last July. The country's growing appeal among European tourists, alongside strong local and regional demand, reflects its broader strategy to diversify its tourism base and bolster the hospitality sector, in line with similar initiatives across Gulf Cooperation Council member states. Minister of Heritage and Tourism Salim bin Mohammed Al-Mahrouqi said the growth in visitor arrivals, spending, and economic value reflects the result of focused and ambitious efforts by the ministry to promote Oman as a rich and diverse tourism destination, according to ONA. He added that the latest indicators serve as a testament to the government's economic diversification policies and effective inter-agency coordination that supports investment and accelerates project implementation. Al-Mahrouqi also said that the ministry continues to adopt innovative marketing strategies, strengthen partnerships with the private sector, and develop offerings to enhance the overall visitor experience. GDP growth forecast at 2.2% in 2025 The sultanate's economy is forecast to grow by 2.2 percent in 2025, up from 1.7 percent the previous year, supported by a recovery in oil activities and steady non-oil sector expansion, according to the Ministry of Economy's 2025 economic outlook. Inflation is projected to rise modestly to 1.3 percent, up from 0.6 percent in 2024. Still, it will remain within the target range of Oman's 10th five-year plan, aided by continued government subsidies and stable global commodity prices. The ministry estimates GDP at constant prices will increase from 38.3 billion rials in 2024 to 39.2 billion rials in 2025. Oil activities are expected to rebound with 1.3 percent growth after a 3 percent contraction in 2024, while non-oil sectors are projected to grow by 2.7 percent. Medium-term momentum is expected to continue through 2026 and 2027, bolstered by strategic projects and higher oil production, ONA reported.
