Babar Azam And Mohammad Rizwan Demoted To 'B' Category In PCB Central Contracts
Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are in Category B while no player has been deemed good enough for Category A.
In a major development, Babar Azam and current ODI captain Mohammad Rizwan have been downgraded to category B in the latest central contracts list released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday.
The PCB has found no cricketer suitable for the elite category, placing 30 players in Categories 'B', 'C', and 'D'.
The contracts, effective from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, reflect the Board's continued commitment to recognising and supporting national talent. This year's roster includes ten players each in Categories B, C, and D. Notably, no player has been selected for Category A in this cycle, the PCB stated in a media release.
The PCB release does not mention the valuation of the contracts.
Babar and Rizwan have been penalised for their consistently poor performances across all major events, including last year's T20 World Cup, this year's ICC Champions Trophy, and the bilateral series against Bangladesh and the West Indies.
T20 skipper Salman Ali Agha, on the other hand, has been promoted from group C to B.
Other notable promotions include opener Saim Ayub and pacer Haris Rauf.
Compared to last year's list of 27 contracted players, the PCB has expanded the pool to 30, including 12 new additions.
The new entrants are Ahmed Daniyal, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan, Salman Mirza, and Sufyan Moqim.
Additionally, nine players have retained their positions in the same categories.
They are Abdullah Shafique (Category C), Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Wasim Jnr – all in Category D, Noman Ali, Sajid Khan, Saud Shakeel – all in Category C, and Shaheen Shah Afridi (Category B).
Eight players who have missed out on contracts this year include Aamir Jamal, Haseebullah, Kamran Ghulam, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Muhammad Irfan Khan, and Usman Khan. They were all in Category D.
Pakistan's centrally contracted players
Category C (10 players): Abdullah Shafique, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Nawaz, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Sahibzada Farhan, Sajid Khan, and Saud Shakeel
Category D (10 players): Ahmed Daniyal, Hussain Talat, Khurram Shahzad, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Salman Mirza, Shan Masood, and Sufyan Moqim.

Why Shubman Gill Replaced Axar Patel As T20I Vice-Captain For Asia Cup? Ajit Agarkar Explains
India Test captain Shubman Gill on Tuesday was named in the 15-man squad for the Asia Cup 2025, starting September 9. Gill, who last played a T20I for India in July last year, was named vice-captain for the tournament in the UAE. In Gill's absence, Axar Patel had been deputising captain Suryakumar Yadav in the format. The decision to name Gill raised a few eyebrows, despite the young batter doing well in his debut Test series as captain during the recently-concluded England tour. India T20I captain Suryakumar, while speaking at a press conference, revealed the reason why Gill was appointed his deputy, instead of Axar. He pointed out that Gill was the vice-captain the last time he played in the format. "The last time he played T20Is for India was when we went to Sri Lanka after the T20 World Cup, not Zimbabwe. I was leading, he was vice-captain, and that's where we started the new cycle for T20 World Cup. After that, he got busy with all the Test series. So, he didn't get the opportunity to play anywhere in T20Is as he got busy playing Test cricket, as well as the Champions Trophy. So, he is there in the squad and they are happy to have him," Suryakumar said during the press conference. Suryakumar's clarification hints at India's possible plans to unveil him as an all-format player after his leadership elevation on the England tour. The eight-team Asia Cup T20I tournament will be staged in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from September 9 to 28. Defending champions India are placed in Group 'A' alongside Pakistan, Oman and the UAE. The Suryakumar-led side will start their campaign against the UAE on September 10 before the blockbuster clash against archrivals Pakistan on September 14. India are scheduled to play 15 T20I games after the continental tournament in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February. India's squad for Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.
