The National Women's Soccer League announced Denver as its 16th franchise on Thursday after ownership paid a record $110 million fee.
Straight Arrow News
Peyton Manning might be known for Omaha, but his influence in Denver reigns supreme.
The former Denver Broncos quarterback has joined the ownership group for the city's National Women's Soccer League franchise, which is set to begin play in 2026.
Despite 13 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, it's Manning's final four NFL seasons with the Broncos that seem to be the lasting image. The quarterback has remained involved with the organization in his post-playing days, serving an an ambassador for the franchise.
The five-time NFL MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion, who lives in the area, makes frequent appearances at Broncos' games, deepening his connection to the city. Of course, he's also remained busy in other ventures since hanging up the cleats.
Manning has furthered his media and business influence post-career through Omaha Productions and the "Manningcast" on "Monday Night Football" during select games throughout the NFL season.
Now he can add the NWSL to that list. Here's what to know about Manning's dive into women's sports:
NWSL Denver owners
Denver's NWSL ownership group is led by controlling owner, Rob Cohen.
Manning joins a lengthy list of investors including, Ariel Investments' Project Level, Jon-Erik Borgen, Kaia Borgen Moritz, Neelima Joshi, Dhiren Jhaveri, Molly Coors, and Olympic gold medalist skier Mikaela Shiffrin.
NWSL EXPANSION: Mikaela Shiffrin joins ownership group for Denver franchise
'Peyton's legacy as a champion and a leader is second to none,' Cohen said in a statement. 'His impact on Colorado sports is unmatched, and we're incredibly proud to have him as a partner. He brings passion, insight, and deep local roots – all of which will help us shape the future of Denver NWSL.'
The future team hasn't unveiled a name or branding, meaning Manning is getting in on the ground floor of this operation.
'It's a real honor to be part of something so meaningful to the Colorado community,' Manning said in the team's announcement. 'I'm proud to support the growth of women's sports and excited to help build a club that our city and our state can rally behind.'
This will be Manning's first venture into owning a sports team. His brother, Eli Manning, is a minority investor in Gotham FC.
Peyton Manning investments
Manning hasn't faded into the sunset following retirement from football. If anything, his profile has only grown over time with an expanding investment and sponsorship portfolio.
Commonly seen on Nationwide Insurance commercials, Manning is certainly familiar with the commercial game.
However, he is likely best-known at this stage for his media company, Omaha Productions, which has expanded it's NFL profile in recent years.
The production company behind the Netflix series "Quarterback" and "Receiver," they have also had a hand in other documentaries, unscripted shows and podcasts.
Aside from media, Manning recently invested in Good Good Golf, which sells performance golfwear. He previously was part of investments into Whistle Sports, SeatGeek and more.
Peyton Manning NFL stats
Manning played 17 seasons in the NFL after he was drafted No. 1 overall in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
The Tennessee Volunteers' prospect went on to accomplish just about everything there is in the NFL, racking up accolades all the way until his final season in 2015 – when he retired after winning the Super Bowl.
Manning was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2021, immortalizing a career that saw him selected to the Pro Bowl 14 times, become an All-Pro seven times, win two Super Bowls, a Super Bowl MVP, two-time Offensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year and a five-time NFL MVP.
He finished his career with 186-79 record, throwing for 71,940 yards, 539 touchdowns and 251 interceptions.

2025 Commanders game-by-game predictions: Next stop Super Bowl?

What will Jayden Daniels do for an encore after winning the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2024? After leading the Washington Commanders to the 2024 NFC title game, can the star quarterback take the team one step further in 2025? The last time Washington appeared in a Super Bowl was 1992. The Commanders face a daunting 2025 schedule — the eighth-toughest in the league based on opponents' winning percentage last year — that includes five prime-time games, a trip to Madrid and a Christmas Day tussle with the Cowboys. Washington's road slate includes the Packers, Chargers, Chiefs and Vikings — all playoff teams last season. And in the final three weeks of the regular season, the Commanders play four straight games against NFC East rivals, including the Super Bowl-champion Eagles twice. Bottom line: Daniels & Co. have an uphill climb to duplicate the success of last year. Let's break down their season week by week. Week 1: vs. Giants, Sunday, Sept. 7 Head coach Dan Quinn gets his first look at a New York offense led by Russell Wilson, with whom he teamed up to win a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks. Daniels will have to contend with talented edge rusher Abdul Carter, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. But the Commanders swept the season series with their NFC East rivals last year and have won four of the past six games. They'll continue to have the Giants' number here. Result: Win, 1-0 record Week 2: at Packers, Thursday, Sept. 11 Washington's first prime-time game of the season is in Green Bay, where the Commanders have a 5-13-1 all-time record. The last time Washington won in Green Bay was 1986. Packers QB Jordan Love has a new weapon in the passing game with speedy first-round receiver Matthew Golden. The Commanders do get the benefit of playing in Green Bay in late summer, avoiding cold weather, but they still take a loss. Result: Loss, 1-1 Week 3: vs. Raiders, Sunday, Sept. 21 Quinn faces his mentor in Pete Carroll as the Commanders host the Silver and Black. While Carroll-led teams have traditionally been competitive in cross-country games, the Raiders finished 2-7 on the road in 2024 and will still be finding their way at this point of the season. Result: Win, 2-1 Week 4: at Falcons, Sunday, Sept. 28 Daniels and fellow 2024 draftee Michael Penix Jr. meet for the second time in their short careers. Daniels won the first matchup, rushing for a season-high 127 yards in a hotly-contested 30-24 victory in Week 18. Former Falcons coach Quinn returns to Atlanta for the first time as a head coach, facing his former colleague Raheem Morris. Result: Win, 3-1 Week 5: at Chargers, Sunday, Oct. 5 Daniels and Justin Herbert face off at SoFi Stadium in a scintillating matchup between two of the top quarterbacks in the league. The Bolts also have one of the top defenses from the 2024 season, led by up-and-coming coordinator Jesse Minter. Washington's run defense will be tested by L.A.'s one-two punch in the backfield of first-round pick Omarion Hampton and free-agent signee Najee Harris. Result: Loss, 3-2 Week 6: vs. Bears, Monday, Oct. 13 Last season, the Commanders beat the Bears on a last-second Hail Mary, so Chicago will surely be looking for some payback. Plus, Caleb Williams, who was drafted ahead of Daniels, will want to show his progress under new head coach Ben Johnson, one of the league's best offensive minds. Note that Johnson spurned the Commanders during the 2024 hiring cycle, which ultimately led to the hiring of Quinn, who will beat the Bears again. Result: Win, 4-2 RELATED: Bears-Commanders among top 10 revenge games for 2025 Week 7: at Cowboys, Sunday, Oct. 19 The Cowboys have won six of the past eight games in this classic rivalry, including the last four games in Dallas. New Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer will experience some growing pains in his first season, but having a healthy Dak Prescott back leading the offense should alleviate some of those issues. In Prescott's first matchup against Daniels, the veteran will come out on top. Result: Loss, 4-3 Week 8: at Chiefs, Monday, Oct. 27 After facing Prescott, Daniels takes on Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes for the first time in his NFL career. He'll also face the daunting task of going against longtime Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, whose scheme has been tough to decipher for young quarterbacks. Result: Loss, 4-4 Week 9: vs. Seahawks, Sunday, Nov. 2 Legion of Boom founding member Bobby Wagner faces his former team for the first time as a Commander. And receiver Deebo Samuel is probably licking his chops in anticipation of seeing his former NFC West rival. Samuel totaled 766 receiving yards and four touchdowns in eight games against Seattle while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Result: Win, 5-4 Week 10: vs. Lions, Sunday, Nov. 9 Washington faces one of last season's most explosive offenses in the Lions. However, how different will Detroit's offense be with John Morton replacing Ben Johnson as OC? The Lions also lost defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who left to become head coach of the Jets, so Dan Campbell will have his hands full resetting the culture on both sides of the football. Result: Win, 6-4 Week 11: vs. Dolphins, Sunday, Nov. 16 In the franchise's first international game since 2016, facing Miami in Madrid, the Commanders take on another explosive offense. Top of mind for Washington defensive coordinator Joe Whitt will be slowing down Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who loves to create explosive plays down the field for Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Result: Win, 7-4 Week 12: Bye Week 13: vs. Broncos, Sunday, Nov. 30 Daniels takes on another quarterback from the 2024 draft class in Bo Nix, who surprisingly helped lead Denver to the playoffs in his first season. The Broncos also bring one of the top defenses to Northwest Stadium, led by last year's Defensive Player of the Year, cornerback Patrick Surtain II. Result: Win, 8-4 Week 14: at Vikings, Sunday, Dec. 7 With J.J. McCarthy set to lead the Minnesota offense, Daniels will face the fourth different quarterback from his 2024 draft class. This is an important game for the Commanders, as it could affect playoff seeding in the NFC conference. The Vikings have won five of the past six games against Washington, and Minnesota will extend its dominance. Result: Loss, 8-5 Week 15: at Giants, Sunday, Dec. 14 New York's vaunted pass rush — led by Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux — finished with five total sacks and 19 pressures in two games against Washington last year. The Commanders worked this offseason to provide better pass protection for Daniels with the addition of Laremy Tunsil via trade and the selection of Josh Conerly Jr. in the first round of the draft. Games like this one against the Giants will test if those were good moves for the Commanders. Result: Loss, 8-6 Week 16: vs. Eagles, Saturday, Dec. 20 Saquon Barkley averaged 138 rushing yards a contest and scored seven touchdowns in three games against the Commanders last season. But Washington needs this win at home. Result: Win, 9-6 Week 17: vs. Cowboys, Thursday, Dec. 25 The Commanders play their first-ever game on Christmas, hosting a marquee matchup against America's Team. How Washington matches up defensively with star receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens will go a long way in determining who gets the last present under the tree. Result: Win, 10-6 Week 18: at Eagles, Flex Game These final three games will likely determine if the Eagles can become the first team to repeat as NFC East champs since Philly won the division in four consecutive seasons from 2001 to 2004. They could also determine which of the Eagles, Commanders and Cowboys will move on to the postseason. A lot of Washington's offseason moves were made with defeating the Eagles in mind. We'll find out if they were the right decisions at the end of the season. Result: Loss Final Record prediction: 10-7 Eric D. Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman join Australia SailGP team as co-owners

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman become co-owners of the Australia SailGP team on Thursday. The 'Deadpool & Wolverine' stars joined driver and CEO Tom Slingsby in leading the team's rebrand after several successful seasons, winning three championships in its four seasons. The team will be called the BONDS Flying Roos, with the Australian underwear company BONDS as its title partner. 'We're incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure,' Reynolds and Jackman said in a joint statement released through SailGP. 'Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country, as well as being an avid fan of sailing. He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. Apologies in advance to Australia. No comment on whether we're writing this in our BONDS. No further questions.' It's the latest sports venture for Reynolds, a Vancouver native who, along with fellow Hollywood actor Rob McElhenney, is a co-owner of Wrexham, one of the world's oldest soccer clubs. Reynolds and McElhenney were also part of an investment group that acquired Colombian club La Equidad earlier this year. The BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team is expected to make its debut at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix starting June 7. Slingsby, an Olympic gold medalist, said in a release that Jackman and Reynolds bring 'unmatched star power, a love for storytelling, and a sharp sense of (humour) that fits perfectly with our team.' 'With BONDS joining as our Title Partner and the launch of the BONDS Flying Roos,' Slingsby added, 'we're building something distinctly Australian; a team driven by spirit, resilience, and national pride.' ___ AP sports:

UFC 316 preview roundtable: If Sean O'Malley loses again to Merab Dvalishvili, is this the end?

It's a bantamweight showcase as the UFC heads back to New Jersey this weekend, with titles on the line in both the men's and women's 135-pound divisions. On the men's side it's a rematch, as 'Suga' Sean O'Malley tries to win back the title he lost at UFC 306 in September against Merab Dvalishvili. On the women's side, it's the ushering in of a new era, as Kayla Harrison — the Olympic judoka who has made it her mission to win a UFC title — arrives as a massive favorite to overthrow Julianna Peña. Or is it the dawn of a new era? Advertisement Let's jump right in with five burning questions heading into UFC 316. 1. Sean O'Malley gave up his favorite pastimes — marijuana, social media, masturbation — to better focus for this rematch. He's all in! Is this the end of the 'Suga Show' if he loses? Petesy Carroll: It would be the end of me full-stop, man. I'm kind of perplexed by it all. Certainly, two of these three things were foundational elements of the 'Suga' brand and then to add to that there's the abstaining from social media … I'm kidding. Well, kind of, is O'Malley getting into golf now or what's he doing to fill the void? Is he crocheting? Did he get a New York Times subscription and start playing Sudoku? Feels like he's treating this like a do-or-die fight. That said if he loses, I expect him to move up to featherweight and return to his old puffing, typing and … well you get the point, he'd start doing all of those things again, right? Chuck Mindenhall: Doesn't it feel 'Suga' Sean is forever, like, 26 years old? It's odd that he's now 30, which is right around that age when we like to say a fighter is 'peaking.' If he can clear the Merab hurdle, I think he'd skyrocket back into that star area he was in before being humbled at the Sphere, with all those vices he's sacrificing for this fight once again at the core of his being. Advertisement I also think he moves up to featherweight if he loses, as being behind the Merab eight-ball is a nihilistic situation. With guys like O'Malley, there are still plenty of options ahead, all of which I am sure he'd just assume avoid. What becomes of "Suga" Sean O'Malley should he lose again to Merab Dvalishvili? (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) (Chris Unger via Getty Images) 2. Are you disturbed by the lack of heat for this rematch? Merab and O'Malley have been so respectful in the lead-up, haven't they? Chuck: The last time through was different, as O'Malley was holding the title and treating Merab like a nuisance to be dealt with … and we all knew he was much more than a nuisance. All the shots they were taking at each other felt more playful than anything else, strictly for entertainment purposes. I didn't sense a lot of genuine heat, outside of Tim Welch's contributions to the mix. Advertisement This time through it has been very quiet. Not just with the principals in play, but in general. I haven't heard anybody outside of the MMA spectrum mention that O'Malley is fighting this weekend, which is startling, no? Petesy: Let's be honest, 'Lack of Heat' could be title of a Netflix documentary about UFC's start to 2025. I don't know if it's anything to do with the switch up in dynamic between the lads as much as it's just fan fatigue at this point. Being a UFC fan in 2025 is like being in a semi-serious relationship. You're expected to give up a day of your life every week regardless of the stakes, intrigue or ability on display on these cards. When a genuinely good one comes along like this, I think it's just difficult for everyone to switch into the 'excitement' gear. I do think it's a really good card, but I can't remember the last time we were all frothing at the mouth for a UFC pay-per-view. It certainly hasn't been over the five months, and that's pretty sad. All in all, I guess it's that situation that I find more disturbing than anything else but replies on X would have me believe I'm a jaded old fool and I need to lose some weight, but that's beside the point. 3. What is Julianna Peña's path to victory over the massive favorite, Kayla Harrison? Petesy: I won't let Julianna Peña's disrespect of my nationality or her claims that I want to be pegged by Kayla Harrison color my opinion on this one, Chuck. But, let it be known that a lesser man would. Why would she makes such claims, you ask? Well, it's because I'm the only one on the entire hosting staff of "The Ariel Helwani Show" that picked — *checks notes* — the biggest betting favorite a challenger has ever been in the history of UFC, in this case Harrison, to have her hand raised on Saturday night. Advertisement Be that as it may, I think Peña can absolutely get the job done. We've witnessed her shock the world before against Amanda Nunes and if she can keep this fight standing and keep her lead hand in Harrison's face, the Olympic gold medalist might be left with a lot to do by the time the championship rounds kick in. Let the record show that I don't think that will happen, though. Chuck: Julianna really said all that? About the pegging? Damn, I must've missed that segment. One of the reasons she has been a two-time champion in this sport is because she takes little sleights like that and packs it into her resolve. Nobody carries a chip like the "Venezuelan Vixen," Petesy, and I admire that you stuck to your guns on this. My thing with Harrison is the same as always. How much will that weight cut take out of her in the end? She has now been living on a restrictive diet for well over a year and getting down to 135 pounds is a recurring hell. One of these times it will come back to bite her, and we'll hear about it afterward. Will that be this time? Advertisement I think Harrison will win this fight, because I think she'll get it to the ground and do work there. Yet, I will say Peña is a live dog. We saw Ketlen Vieira survive to see the scorecards with Harrison, which made her seem … less inevitable. If she can't get the fight where she wants it? Things might get interesting in a hurry. Patchy Mix (20-1, 2 KOs), former Bellator bantamweight championship, makes his UFC debut at UFC 316. (Photo by Matt Davies/PxImages/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) (Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) 4. Of all the Bellator fighters who've come over to UFC, where do you rank Patchy Mix ahead of his fight with Mario Bautista? Chuck: We've seen some good ones come through from Bellator over the years, including Eddie Alvarez, Michael Chandler and Alexander Volkov back in the day, along with Patricio Pitbull, Aaron Pico and Michael 'Venom' Page more recently. I would place Patchy Mix right up there among the best of the bunch for one reason: He's very much still in his prime. Advertisement He is 31 years old and just hitting on all cylinders, having won seven fights in a row. He hasn't taken nearly as much damage as Alvarez and Chandler (who inflicted plenty of it on each other), and he's far more proven as a former champion than, say, Pico. There's a good possibility that if Mix beats Bautista that he's catapulted into the top space to be challenging for a title, and I think he'll get his shot at some point in the near future. Petesy: I think he might be the best. There have been greats in the past, as Alvarez famously went on to claim the lightweight title after making the transition. Eddie was a year younger than Patchy when he made the move but I also think that he joined a lightweight division that wasn't as healthy as the current situation we see in the UFC's bantamweight class. That might be unfair to Eddie, as he had to get through Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis before dethroning Rafael Dos Anjos, but I really feel this is one of the strongest bantamweight rosters of all time. If Patchy ain't the best, I'd have him second to Eddie, but I'm expecting big things from him. 5. What's one other fight on UFC 316 that is guaranteed to deliver? Petesy: Luque vs. Holland has chaos written all over it. And speaking of chaos, or a variation of the spelling, Khaos Williams and Andreas Gustafsson could be a banger, too. While we're on the topic of things that are guaranteed to deliver, the most exciting part of the whole damn night for me will be jumping on YouTube for a live show with you and the big homie Helwani for our 3PAC post-fight special! Yes, that was a blatant plug, and I can only apologize. See you there, Mith! Advertisement Chuck: Blatant plug, and I love it — no need to apologize. Glad to have the gang back together. I will see if I can get in a word edgewise with you two yappers, but one thing I know for certain we'll be discussing? The return of the great Kelvin Gastelum. I kid, of course. (How is Gastelum still appearing on these cards? His nickname should be the 'Cockroach,' because you just can't kill him.) There's a reason they put that Luque-Holland fight at the top of the PPV, and it's not because they are brilliant technicians, Petesy. With no real care about title shots or any of the worldly structures the UFC has put up, their whole mission is to tear it all down. It's a fight with next to no perceptible stakes, which is some serious Chris Leben territory. Action is the only goal. To live-for-the-now and to put on a show. I think this one delivers.
