Syabu trafficking: Filipino gets 30 years, 12 lashes

Published on: Thursday, August 21, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 21, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Alisa being escorted out after sentencing at the Tawau High Court. TAWAU: A 30-year-old Filipino labourer, Alisa Badan, was sentenced to 30 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane by the High Court on Wednesday after being found guilty of trafficking 1,128.5 grammes of syabu. High Court Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol handed down the sentence after ruling that the defence failed to raise reasonable doubt. Advertisement The court found that the drugs, discovered in a black bag at Hotel City Inn, Semporna, on May 14, 2023, were indeed in Alisa's possession. Alisa, a father of three who worked at the Semporna Jetty, was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) and punishable under Section 39B(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which allows for either the death penalty or life imprisonment with not less than 12 strokes of the cane if the death sentence is not imposed. In mitigation, defence counsel Jhesseny P. Kang pleaded for a custodial sentence instead of death, citing Alisa's first offence and his intention to reform. The court granted this under the revised sentencing provisions of the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Nisla Abd Latif urged for a stiff sentence, noting the increasing number of drug trafficking cases under Section 39B at the Tawau High Court. She argued that a harsh penalty would serve as an effective deterrent. The court ordered the sentence to take effect from May 14, 2023, the date of Alisa's arrest. The trial, which began on April 28, included testimony from eight prosecution witnesses. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Multipurpose hall for villagers

Published on: Thursday, August 21, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 21, 2025 By: Gerry Lewis Text Size: Dr Jeffrey being welcomed by villagers of Kg Pagalan Kusob during the multipurpose hall launch ceremony. TAMBUNAN: Deputy Chief Minister and Sabah Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G Kitingan, officiated the Kg. Pagalan Kusob Multipurpose Hall during a ceremony attended by local residents recently. The event began with an inspection of a new suspension bridge construction site, followed by a ribbon-cutting and plaque-signing ceremony to mark the official launch of the facility. Advertisement In his speech, Dr Jeffrey congratulated the local community on finally having a dedicated space for social and community events. He highlighted the hall's role as a comfortable venue for gatherings, celebrations, and other activities. Taking the opportunity to share Sabah's historical journey, he explained that Sabah Day on August 31 marks the state's independence from British rule in 1963—prior to the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963. 'On August 8, 1963, the State Legislative Council passed a resolution declaring Sabah's independence on August 31, 1963, regardless of Malaysia's formation,' he said, adding that such historical facts should be taught to younger generations in schools. Dr Jeffrey also reminded citizens that Malaysia Day on September 16 should be recognised as the true National Day, marking the actual birth of the Malaysian federation. During the ceremony, he announced the approval of three new projects for Kg. Pagalan Kusob: Construction of toilet facilities, a kitchen to complement the hall and a new suspension bridge for public use Event organiser and Mukim Patau Developer Boniface George Mool expressed gratitude for Dr Jeffrey's support. He noted that the multipurpose hall, which began construction in 2021 and was completed in 2022, is currently the only such facility in the area. Boniface also provided updates on the RM49 million Lembah Pagalan road project, which is ongoing and expected to be completed by 2027. The event was made possible with contributions from various individuals, including RM2,000 from Dr Jeffrey, RM200 from Datuk Lawrence Gimbang, and additional support from Datuk Peter Kuling. The celebration concluded with cultural performances, singing, and a community feast, fostering unity among the attendees. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
