Joon Park Hyung, aka Joon Park, is a South Korea-born American singer and actor. In 2014, it was confirmed that he was dating a flight attendant who was 13 years his junior. A year later, he got married to her in a private ceremony in Seoul. The couple welcomed their daughter in 2017.
Joon Park: Journey In The Industry
In 1997, Joon Park moved back to South Korea to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. He joined an agency and began recruiting members for a group that would create music taking influences from both Korea and the West.
The group faced numerous hurdles prior to their debut, including the country's economic crisis in 1997. The group, initially a mixed-gender group named GOT7, roped in Park Jin Young, also known as JYP, as their mentor and producer.
Following the departure of one of the members, the five-membered group debuted as g.o.d. In 1999. They released their debut album, titled Chapter 1, in January of that year. The group first appeared on television performing the track To Mother, partly based on Joon's childhood, where he was raised by his widowed mother.
Just two years after their debut, the group was on the verge of disbanding due to a dating scandal involving Park Joon. After much backlash, their agency decided otherwise.
In 2005, Joon left the group and decided to pursue a career in acting in the US. The boy band did not disband, but announced an indefinite break.
He made his acting debut in Hollywood with a cameo in the 2008 sports drama Speed Racer. Joon Park has appeared in several K-dramas and has been featured on various Korean reality TV shows.
In 2014, he returned to South Korea for g.o.d's 15th anniversary. He re-signed with the agency SidusHQ. They released the album, Chapter 8, after a nearly decade-long hiatus.
Joon Park: Career Highlights
Joon Park served as the leader of the K-pop group g.o.d.
He has acted in the 2009 film Dragonball Evolution, directed by James Wong.
The actor and singer has been a cast member in reality shows like Roommate, TMI News, and I Can See Your Voice, among others.
He has also hosted shows like Other World Used Cars-Gear GODs, and Live Well, Fun Equipment.
Joon Park has a YouTube channel named Wassup Man.
Joon Park: Legacy In K-Pop
Joon Park, along with his group g.o.d, is considered one of the pioneers of K-pop. Back in the early 2000s, they were South Korea's bestselling artists. Comprising Joon Park, Danny Ahn, Son Ho Young, Kim Tae Woo and Yoon Kye Sang, the group came to be known for their mix of R&B, rap, hip-hop, funk, and Korean-style ballads.
At a time when English lyrics were used in Korean songs, they opted to sing and rap entirely in their native language. They were even the first to have their own reality show: g.o.d's Babysitting Diaries. g.o.d also became the first K-pop act to earn the nickname 'the nation's group" due to their humble nature, powerful vocals and relatable lyrics.
